So I was wondering about how much characters would know about holy symbols and the deities colors. Does everyone know that cyric's colors are purple and black? Or what bane's symbol is? I would assume that clerics would be the closest class to knowing this, since they study religions pretty heavily. But I would think there might still be a lore check involved? Especially since there are some evil gods that wouldn't necessarily want this information known. Thanks.

Interesting question since everyone seems to infer religious affliation from colors a PC wears. There may be some association as a PC visits various temple devoted to certain faiths, but then again there is no run that says devout followers cant wear any other color. My point being different temples of the same deity may dress differently. Anyway, no idea where I am going with this... I'm rambling.. I'll let one of the other DMs answer.

I wasn't trying to say that people could only wear the colors of their patron deity. Just wondering if characters could assume from the colors one wears what deity they serve (although it would most likely be a wrong assumption). Likewise, if mano sees someone sitting by the fire in isinhold with a black circle rimmed in purple, can he assume what deity they serve, or would that just appear as a decoration in his eyes?
How well known are these things around the realms?

While Shar is a secretive deity (in your last example), she's also one of the oldest deities and very openly opposed by a number of good and neutral churches. I'd say it's fairly safe to assume that even commoners would know the holy symbols and colours of Greater Powers. The symbols of Intermediate Powers and Lesser Powers would be less well known and demipowers would probably get a "Who?" out of most commoners unless the character is from a region where that demipower is popular.
Racial deities would be more popular among their race, but not unheard of among other races. That is to say, everyone has probably heard of Corellon Larethian, Gruumsh, Yondalla, Garl Glittergold, and Lolth, but other deities in their pantheons are less well-known.
