When a PC is using the 'whisper' channel, at what point can't a DM see that whisper in their dialogue box, be it: 1. a DM not actively particpating in the environment by just watching players RP, 2. DM's possessing a NPC built into the module and, 3. if there's a difference, DM's playing the role of an NPC they created for a specific DM interaction?

If I'm not leaning close to my computer screen I tend to miss whispers..... ok not really.
I was possessing a NPC in a totally different part of the mod and hearing whispers and regular talk from all over the mod.
Out of curiosity what brought this question on?

When not possessing I find the same restrictions apply to me as do a player, i.e. if I am not close enough I cannot hear your whisper.
However when possessing a NPC, those whispers show up in the game log window for me no matter where I am in the mod, so I am betting the other guys and girls see that too.
One option if you know a DM is near and want to ensure we hear it is to emote the whisper:
*whisper* mate look at his coin pouch.. lets hit him!
Or... and this one is my preference not the other guys... use the party channel. Now dont take that to mean spew your whole conversation on the party channel just a line or two if you are trying to make sure the DM hears it.

That's odd, 'cause on a different server players were always told to refrain from using the whisper channel during events since DMs couldn't hear the whisper unless they were within range, and thus the DM running the event would be unable to respond to anything the players whispered to each other. So it makes a difference if the DM is possesing something in the mod? I think this has to do with the different tools that can be utilized, etc. We proudly use the DMFI wand package in all of it's glory. It is a powerful set of DM tools that allow for alot of interesting *ahem* scenarios.

Whispers cannot be heard by DMs (while possessing an NPC or otherwise) if the DM is not near enough to the character whispering (i.e., the same with any other players). This can be overcome by the DMs if we use a certain DMFI tool, which isn't necessarily on all the time

Basically there are several varibles. So talk... whisper... tells... Don't count on us to be able to hear you. Don't count on us not hearing you.

Out of curiosity what brought this question on? Justi's quote of Kenny a few posts up pretty much summed up what inspired this question.
