*A letter given to the leadership of the Purple Dragons, given by way of a low-ranking officer.*
*Additionally, a copy of this letter was posted outside of The Regal Griffon Inn in Greatgaunt.*
It is with deep sadness and compassion that I am compelled to report most terrifying news.
Early morning, in the First Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Month of Ches, an entire squad of bandits began assault upon the East Gates of Greatgaunt and fought their way inside the Town of Greatgaunt.
The invaders, of which I counted no less than Five Plus One Dozen — a full squadron! — seemed intent on disrupting civilians and harming anyone in their way. Cele, one of our nobles, was nearest the East Gate at the time and was promptly assaulted, and immediately fled. (I fear for her safety!) The attackers took up positions in and around the farm houses on the east side of town, pillaging what they could, in a restless manner.
I attempted to rally the townsfolk and our intrepid mercenaries to assist (of whom we have had a recent influx in town). But alas, at this hour of night, I could not find a single soul! (Neither in the inn!) Earlier in the night I had been speaking with a former Purple Knight who had personal business in Greatgaunt, but even they were nowhere to be found. The only reasonable explanation is, outside of a possible pre-planned, unfortunately-timed campaign by our heroes, is instead that of an elaborate distraction on behalf of the perpetrators — a decoy, if you will — outside of Greatgaunt, which would prove to be an opportune seizure.
After a prolonged skirmish, the bandits were ultimately routed, many thanks in part to the blades of the Town Guard, most notably that of Benton the Esteemed Guardsman, and regrettably several from my own hands of my bow! Again, I counted seventeen attackers, with roughly half of them as bodies recovered. (I assure you! I do not seek blood of my fellow men and women! The murders were only necessary in the town’s defense as their actions were deliberately hostile.)
I do not believe my actions are a result of malice, and I do not feel a punishment is warranted. I am however willing to an interview and even stand trial if you feel it necessary. My actions were solely in defense of the town, and the Greatgaunt Militia would surely agree!
That being said, we should be asking, why? They must have been after something or someone — though I could only guess at what, else why would it have been so coordinated? Thankfully no buildings were set afire, and aside from the attack on Cele, by a miracle I believe no civilians were killed (aside from minor to moderately severe injuries)! Although I am no legal investigator, I am to wonder if they were too busy searching the houses, the people. What is it they seek?
I worked with the Town Guard all night, moving bodies and tending to the townsfolk. In the early hours, we had difficulty identifying who all of these assailants were; however, a few of the banditry were still identified by townsfolk, guardsmen, and visitors. These names include Dand Goodman, Kaley Willendry, Jachan Fers and Lorrister Fynolt. Among their possessions I found 50 gold pieces. (Which I hadn’t submitted to the Town Guard, but I am happy to forfeit to the State at your discretion. In the tussle, Cele had dropped a few belongings, but these were also recovered, and returned.)

The events of this night have me deeply concerned, and greater patrols may be required in the area.
We must redouble our resolve! Brothers and Sisters, Stay Vigilant!
