History
As with so many of his kind, his half elven mother was the unfortunate victim of rape by an orc raiding party. More unfortunately she died giving birth to her half orc child. Her dying request of her husband was that he raise the child as his own, not blaming the unborn child for the sins of it's biological father. The husband did as she asked, but he was gone for long periods of time, spending it in the nearby forest of Rawlingswood as a woodcutter or as a sellsword for merchant caravans traveling between Tellerth and Trailsend.
The widowed husband was a stern man but not unkind towards the child. He named the half-orc "Kur" not out of a sense of irony or cruelty but in the hopes that such a name would ever remind the boy of how many others would see him, and as a way of drawing out those who had a problem with his heritage, giving Kur fair knowledge of the types of people he was dealing with. Due to the widower's long absences, Kur spent a good portion of his childhood alone, working on the small farm the two lived on. Kur would often spend what little free time he had exploring the northwestern edge of the Rawlingswood forest, where he learned much of the ways of the forest and nature.
Some time during the short summer months of 1383 DR Kur's adoptive father did not return from his excursion into the Rawlingswood. Kur attempted to find him but to no avail. One of the widow's friends came by a few months later in search of the man, but found only Kur. Taking pity on the young man he persuaded Kur to travel south with him in search of fame and fortune in the lands of Cormyr. During the trip south the man discovered Kur's affinity with nature and wild things and decided to reveal himself to be a ranger in service to Gwaeron Windstrom. After speaking with Kur of him the young half-orc man decided to follow Gwaeron as well.
Sadly, the older ranger did not make it to Cormyr beside Kur, as he was waylaid by a woman claiming to have borne his child during their stopover in the port town of Hulburg. Kur decided to continue the trip to Cormyr on his own.
