My wizard has acquired the Shapechange spell and it seems I'm limited assuming the shape of a Red Dragon. Can anyone tell me — or give me a hint regarding — any way to alter this? I did a quick search of the boards and came up empty. I'm wondering if: - the shapes available to assume change as the character level increases...
- the shape available is based on some other character quality...
- there is an item that needs to be equipped in order to assume a different shape...
- that's just the way it is and I need to start liking it...
- or... well... you get the idea
Inquiring minds an' all that...

You should be able to right click on the spell when it's in your hotbar and choose between Iron Golem, Fire Giant, Red Dragon, Balor, and Slaad. Im not sure if its different for wizards and sorcerers and if you have to prepare a specific version. If casting from the radial wheel same thing, clicking on the spell Shapechange should show five options.

Yep... tried right-clicking to pick the form, but Red Dragon was the only option. Didn't occur to me to go through the radial menu.
When I tried casting it that way, the options for the other forms came up, but trying to assume another form – in this case, an Iron Golem) – nothing happened and the spell was expended.
... gonna re-post in DM Q&A 'cause my curiosity is now piqued...

For spells with different options (Shapechange, Shadow Conjuration, even Protection from Alignment), you can set up different slots for different choices. Instead of dragging the spell from the spellbook to the bar, right-click on an empty slot and go through the radial menu to Assign Spell.

Yep... therein lies the problem.
When I add the spell to the quick slot, the only choice I have is "Red Dragon"... nothing else.
I've not run afoul of this using Polymorph potions or scrolls, just the Shapechange spell.

... but, having said that (and out of a deep-seated distrust of my own experience), I did as malclave suggested and assigned the spell to an empty slot through the radial menu and... IT WORKED!! Many thanks!
