Amador Investigative Services

The sound of restraining metal and of wood cracking breaks the silence as the sudden light streaks through the darkness with the opening of the door. The aging couple both walk in, and debris gets kicked across the floor into the shadowy darkness. A smile breaks the man’s normal stoic features and a scowl creases her normal cheerful self. They gaze about the run-down cluttered room, through the beams of filtered dust, both with their ideas of the future. One with carrying on and protecting, being on their own while the other with worry and concern.

“No worries love, just take a bit o’ spit and polish a little arm work, and it we’ll get it fixed up in no time…be a splendid place, jus’ you watch and see” Grit explains to his wife as he places his hand familiarly about her hips hugging her to him. “There’s also a loft upstairs, we could take as our own ta live, be nice ta be close ta work… this will be a fine office. We don’t need much with all the young’uns now on their own”. Trixie, smacks his hand playfully “Indeed we don’t but, that’s not my worry… and stop that now. The children are gone and we don’t need any more. Oh’ Grit you sure?” She looks about with doubt and worry “I know you don’t want to admit, but the years have been hard on you… the Guard took its toll more than you let on and your not as spry as you once were…. Not say’n you cant handle it” wide eyed, holding her hand up to stop him from protesting. Grit eyes her for a minute then lets out a short laugh and grin “Not as spry… am I? Hmm, we’ll see about that later. Don’t ya Fret Trix… you knew this was coming when I resigned… I did my time… I did my duty, but after those murders… and knowing what I do…. Been ‘round a long time… Redmist… now Roar…. I know a few secrets and have many connections with the commoner’s and some of the uppers…. I think I can do some good, more than I could with my hands tied on the Guard. Besides, something too big or far away… we’ll just hire those we can put trust in to do the job for us. One way or another soon, …Amador Investigative Services will be open for business…”

Trixie watches Grit through the now clean window panes, with a small smile and shake of her head as she sees him shake hands with the man with the worried look and pat the crying woman on the shoulder with sympathy. “Looks like it will be beans again, more charity work coming our way. Won’t be the first nor last, I reckon. Man has more heart than money-sense… wouldn’t have him any other way”, sighing to herself as she watches the pair slowly walk away holding each other for comfort. She begins to sweep the floor again as if she didn’t notice anything when Grit opens and comes through the door, tugging on his long “stache” in his tell-tale sign that something is on his mind and troubling him.

She hums to herself going about her cleaning as he picks up the debris she had gathered, after all the long years, knowing and waiting for him to start. “That were the Taylor’s… goodly folk. Got a problem… well two actually” he explains in his deep voice as she stops what she is doing giving him her full attention. Trying to hide her knowing smirk “You don’t say? Not just one but two?”. “Aye, two…. They got a missing daughter that they are worried fretfully about. She’s been gone for more than a day… since ‘bout this time yesterday... and she got a young fella as well, seems he is also missing” he explains rolling his long whiskers between thumb and forefinger. “That’s one problem, what’s the other?” she asks with her best knowing-innocent look. With a big sigh “Well… they don’t have a lot of coin ta be putting out for the seeking”. She lets out with one of her cheerful light laughs “It’s ok Grit I am sure she is fine… and at least it’s not another lost pet”. With a worried look he says “No, but with a young’un… kinda wish it were just a pet. The Taylor’s did say the young buck had taken a fancy ta their Becci and they afear’n she is with him… maybe even left the city for good.” “Oh, phooey Grit. I am sure they are fine and just lost track of time somewhere in the Roar. You DO remember how the young are don’t you? Story kinda reminds me of another I heard thirty some odd years ago” she cracks her full grin with a slight blush. He laughs at that and says “Aye, I thought the same… but when your Pappy caught up with us… I couldn’t sit for a week…. Didn’t make our then sudden wedding night so much fun now did it? Guess we had our fun before it tho… and almost ta the day nine moons later Junior arrived”. “Regrets Grit”? she asks watching him closely. “Nope, not then not now, yer the best thing that ever happen’d ta me Trix. Never would have known it then… all started being hit upside the head with a rock. Lets make sure these Young’un don’t have no regrets neither. I can’t do it myself too much getting this place ready… but I will see about some these adventuring types… they may be interested… errr, if I add a bit of coin to it out of our own purse that is” he lets out with a muttered sigh. Trixie pats his cheek lovingly, awarding him with one of her radiant smiles “Its ok Grit… I like beans….”.

Amador Case: Becci is missing… CLOSED

Grit sits back in his new darkened office, sipping on his Fire-Whiskey, Trixie had gone to sleep some hours earlier and it was his time for musing. Thinking back on the day with the debriefing and the case of the Taylor Girl… Seems it worked out well after all… well mostly… they didn’t make a copper from it, was actually down on his coin from what he had to add from his own purse to hire Seekers. Even counting those that returned theirs or didn’t accept…. *sighs* but it was the right thing ta do. Poor Becci and Kert… the boy must be dumber than a box of rocks.. shoulda known better than ta take her on a pik-a-nik outside the Roar. All know that area is infested with spiders. Throw’n their food ta see if’n they would stop the chase an eat it instead of them… durn fools, shoulda jus’ kept running. Lucky them Seekers came along when they did, sounds like they was cocooned up to be spider-chow when they got there. Lucky indeed, tho… hafta keep ‘em in mind for the next case I can’t do… Trix got their names down …. What were they… that strange fella.. Oshio and… Eleniel, Aria, Emorikal, Dianna, Darvin that stout Tronsgaard and that other funny lil one that come late…. Waldyn or some such…. Yep keep ‘em in mind, he muses looking into his glass…. Draining the last of the whiskey, sighing with the burn, Yep all worked out in the end…. We’ll ‘cept for that young-buck Kert… *small chuckle* after Pop Taylor got ta him…. he wont be sitting on his end for awhile…..

Amador Case: Missing Beggars

Trixie came down the stairs from their private rooms above to the office and kitchen area with the sweet aroma of just baked cookies permeating the air with an undercurrent of something foul and sour, just to catch a glimpse of the back of someone exiting the office. It took only a moment when she recognized who it was who had left and gave Grit a disapproving look. Grit gave her his best innocent look in return, which was not much and a small shrug “Shmedley stopped by for a visit”. Arching her eye and waving a hand in front of her face quickly “So, I saw and can smell. What did he want this time… you didn’t give him coin again now did you”? Grit responded to the first part of her question and planned on forgetting to answer the second “Ya heard ‘bout the fire on the docks the oth’r night? Loud explosion…. Smoke and some fire, but no real damage ta’much. He came ‘bout that.” “Oh my, and why was he coming to see you about that? Was he mixed up in that fuss? I heard they don’t rightly know what to make of that”. Grit looks out the window seeing the coming darkness and walks to his desk to pour himself a two-finger spread of Fire-Whiskey and is awarded with another arched brow look from Trixie which he answered with a shrug and downed the fiery-liquid. He turned giving her his steely look “Nope, not Shmedley… but sounds like Timi were and some others are missing”. Trixie stops in her tracks and her look of displeasure is replaced with one of concern at the mention of Timi. “Timi? Is he ok? How.. what has he done? Where is he?” Grit looks at her holding his hand up for her to stop “Now, now Trix… Timi be ok… he not the ones missing… some o’the others be. Seems… Timi told Shmedley that Ol’ Tomas was on the docks when this took place… he was there as well and saw Tomas being chased away by some crazy lady yell’n and causing a commotion. Tomas aint been seen since… wouldn’t think much of it, but now some of the others be miss’n as well. No, no already told ya Timi is fine. Shmedley jus’ wanted ta see if I could try ta find Tomas an the others. Prolly jus’ sleeping it off somewhere. Still something fishy is going on… at the docks more’n normal… seems some explosives were smuggled inta the Roar.That cant be good. Looks like Timi and Tomas saw something. Guess I could find Timi look in’on him and ask some questions… may even hire some ta track Tomas down and see what this is about… hell he may even be holed up with this crazy woman.” *small laugh* Trixie watches Grit wide-eyed and starts to relax as he talks about looking in on Timi and nods with a small smile glancing at the half empty plate of cookies, “Grit, did you give cookies to Shmedley for Timi?”. Grit gave her one of his winks with a small nod and was rewarded with a soft pat to his cheek.

Amador Case: Missing Beggars … Case CLOSED

Grit leans back in his chair with the flickering light of his lamp playing shadows against the wall, looking over his journal and the notes he had written covering the recent case of the missing beggars… scowling at the thought and his words… not beggars, missing men… *sighs* now dead men… well, at least two of the four are… Pete is alive and in hiding. Tomas… well he is an unknown for now… not rightly sure *another long pull from the fire-whiskey*. He whispers to the darkness in a tired voice “Aye, case closed for now… but not the way it were intended… nope not at all. Poor Shmedley… jus’ another blow for him ta take… one more excuse ta hide in the bottle *glancing at his own and giving a sad smirk at the irony of his words as a steely look comes to his eyes*… don’t ya worry none now… Gorje and Redji… they will pay. By Helm I will make it so… if’n need be… get me some help along the way ta see it done properly *nods at the list of names on his desk that Trixie kept of those they had hired out previously and then downs the rest of the whiskey and pours some more*. “A capable bunch, some of em more than capable… not sure if I can trust em all… but *his eyes stop on a couple names and he nods again* “As me Ol’ Pa always said.. Don’t matter the Tool as long as its right tool ta get the job done properly… *small laugh* cant be all bad can they?.. they liked Trixie’s cookies after all … “ *downs the remainder of his glass and turns the lamp down low*

A Walk Around VR

Trixie places the hot cookies, just taken from the oven, onto the table as Grit walks down the stairs with a look of deep concentration. “About time you arose lazy-bones. I thought I was going to hafta drop a pail of water on you. Sun came up an hour or so back… not like you” she chided her husband. “Aye, it were a late night… look’n inta things is all” he replied absently until he caught a whiff of the fresh cookies and bread and then noticed the kettle of kaeth brewing. “Heh, think I came down jus’ in time. Would’n mind a cup of kav and toast ta start the day out” giving Trixie a wink as he sat down at the table. She pours the kaeth into an earthen mug and takes it to him “Fresh kaeth you may have, but you will have to make do with yesterday’s bread. This other is for Timi and his mum.” She received a playful swat on her rear as she turned, with Grit replying “Story of my life… always yesterdays bread! You always did have a sweetness for the youngins, specially Timi and his mum Salli. How ya figur’n getting ta ‘em”? She turns giving him her best smile and batting her lashes, knowing the affect it would have on him “Why Grit… there is no worry, you are going to escort me”. His jaw drops slightly and he closes it with a smirk at her coyness “I am, am I…. and what’s in this for me”? She walks over and slowly plays with one of his long “staches” while looking down and smiling into his eyes “Well…. you like Timi and want to see him well. I know you care for Salli, even if you don’t care for her profession… barely of age herself and you want to make sure they are taken care of… protected, food on the table. Been awhile since we had a chance to look in on them… with our move and all. And, if that were not enough…. I would be mighty obliged to you for a stroll about town on our return”. Grit clears his throat and gives his wife a devilish-grin and says “Well, I ‘spose I could use a walk and stretch these old legs later t’night… once I have looked inta a thing or two”. Trixie gives him a suggestive wink and a pull on his stache “Somehow, I just knew you would come to that decision”.

Search For the Tanner’s:

The Amador’s returned to their home with the coming dark, both wearing looks of worry at not finding Timi and his mother Salli on their stroll, but each having different thoughts on the next steps on seeing to their care…

They had left earlier than Grit had planned and walked to the Tanner’s run down home in the lesser part of the city to find no answer. Trixie left her care package in the normal nook before departing to walk through the city. It was not unusual to find the broken-down abode empty, but at that time in the morning Salli was normally home trying to get “real sleep” in a bed from her nights work, and Timi normally would be reading… at least for a while until his mother was sound asleep and he could slip out. They had strolled through the city talking and greeting many that they knew, trading pleasantries and always ending with the question if they had seen Timi. Most had at some point, but not in a day or longer. This caused Trixie to grow more worried with each meeting and Grit knew well the signs of her anxiety by the time they reached home.

Trixie laid her once full basket of cookies on the old scarred supper table, there was really only crumbs left after her act of love for the community was spread and shared. She let out a long sigh as she considered their outing and mused… it had started out well enough with the hopes of seeing Timi and his mother… having a quiet talk of reason… Again. Walking through the city, seeing all of their old friends and acquaintances and even making a few new ones over a simple gesture of an offered cookie. Leaving the basket, knowing few would dare to steal from the Tanners or who had left it. The name Amador still went a far way with the common people, perhaps even more so now… She hoped that Timi liked the book she had slipped under the cookies, that boy devours books almost as quickly as he does my cookies she gave a small smile as her thoughts traveled on. It was nice seeing Alyster again… always good for a word or two and that halfling does seem to enjoy my cookies…and the chance meeting of Minister Copperhand, a nice lady… a commoner herself once…. I wonder if she likes tea… all very pleasant, but it didn’t bring us any closer to speaking with the Tanners now did it, she brooded with a frown? Well I will just have to put word out to the Ladies, more eyes on the street and after all we do know best… we’ve been talking and trying to get Salli into a more… respectful line of work… there is little Timi to consider after all. She stopped her line of thought as he she caught Grit squinting from across the table, watching her with a worried scowl as if he could tell what she was thinking and tried to hide her own and gave him a cheerful one in return.

“Don’t you fret none now Tix. They are fine… *holds his hand up as her eyes get big and her bottom lip starts to pout and give a small quiver* I am sure they are… just out and about. Both… for as young as they are… good heads on their shoulders for the most part… and know the streets. I know.. I know, the murders an all… noth’n new there… it’s the Roar after all. But they know ‘bout them too… so, I am sure they being extra careful. Ta put your mind at ease… I will look into it on the ‘morrow” Grit said trying to sound matter of fact, even though she could hear the doubt in his voice. Trying to distract her and change the subject “If I do recall, I believe there was some mention of an obligation… after a walk ‘bout the city… I did do my part after’all.” He grins and nods to the steps going upstairs “Go on… I’ll be up in a minute” She walks by and pats his cheek affectionately with a wink and then heads upstairs.

He walks over to his desk and pours himself two fingers of Fire-Whiskey as he picks up their log book. He flips it open, with steel in his eyes, looking over the list of names once again as he drinks down the whiskey, then mutters “See if I can round some of ‘em up for help… if not, perhaps some new blood is in order…. Anything is better than that Hen-Circle of hers”.

Wish I could make it but tied up tonight

Trixie sets a small dark kerchief hanging from the window of their home, a sign of mourning and loss. A few visitors stop by to check on the truth of matters…

Word gets spread quickly along the “Street” and the lesser portions of the Roar, that the worst fears have been proven true… Sallie Tanner no longer walks the land of the living.

Her young life was cut short… by who, none know for sure, but the name Slinker keeps being uttered followed by a string of curses and the sign to ward away evil. She was liked by most, for her caring and giving nature, many said she had a “Heart of Gold” and was just too damn trusting… deserved a much better life, but did what was needed to take care of Timi… beautiful and headstrong in her independent ways…. What a waste… and poor, poor Timi… all he had was his mother, at least the Amador’s were taking him in… could do much worse… otherwise be left to the streets… or…

Grit watches Trixie as she closes the door for the night after the latest visitor left, her shoulders slumped and sadness written all over her pretty face. His eyes meet her pleading ones and he is about to say something, when they both hear the door crack open at the top of the steps and he changes his mind. Trixie looks up the stairs to see Timi’s eyes peeking through the crack, putting on her most cheerful voice for him, “Yes Timi? Need some warm milk or something before bed?” The door opens a bit wider and the boy looks down all pale and teary-eyed “Mrs. Trixie…they gone? I did’n want no more company… no more questions, no more how it’s’alright and gonna get better. It aint never gonna be bett’r”. Trixie takes a moment and composes herself and speaks quietly “It’s ok Timi, I understand and you are correct it’s not right and never will be right with what happened to your mother… but if you let it and give it time… it can get better. You will always have a place with me and Grit.. as long as we have a roof over our heads… so do you.” The sound of a big sob came down the stairs and then in a small voice “Can I have a cookie and a story before bed?” She blinks, clearing her eyes and then her throat before continuing “Of course you can. Climb in your bed and I will be up in a moment”.

Once the door is closed she looks to her husband, “Oh Grit, what are we going to do?” He watches her with a sad smile “Why Trix, we gonna do the best we can. Gonna see that boy tak’n care of.. an ta his mum, make it right the best we can. Salli always talked of her people having property on the way ta the Capital an want’n ta be laid to rest with her kin… gonna see it so *nods* and then…. After we see to her properly, We find out who done this and make ‘em pay” He goes silent while looking at his mug of Fire-Whiskey. Trixie’s eye grow large, not liking his tone “Grit, your not a guard any longer… you are not the law”. He looks from his mug to the list of names on his desk and then back to her with steel in his eyes “Nope I aint, law got nuth’n ta do with this… but me and mine will bring Justice to ‘em all the same”.

Early in the morning, the Amador’s are seen exiting out the gates of Valkur’s Roar to a waiting coach with several other companions. They all seem apprehensive and looking about as if expecting trouble. They usher a small person, perhaps a child into the interior and close the curtained door. Grit climbs aboard taking the reins and soon heads slowly out and away from the city.

That night nearing dark the coach arrives back to Valkur’s Roar riding lighter in its girth, each member disembarks looking very somber and perhaps a little worse than when they left. They silently ushered the same child back to their home circling him protectively. Once there they all stayed for some time behind closed doors until they left one by one into the darkness of the night.

What happened and what was discussed… one could guess, but only the ones that were there know for sure…

MOVING

Grit looks at the old building with a shake of his head and then set the lock closed with a small click, testing the chain is secure he nods to himself and then turns to his friend. Shmedley watches in disbelief “Dat’s it then? Ya jus leav’n?” Grit lets out a heavy sigh and explains once again to his old friend “Shmed, we been ove’r this a half dozen times al’ready. The Roar aint what it were… and neither am I for that fact. I still got a few travels left in these ol’ bones an I don’t mean ta waste em all just here. Trix thinks it would be good for the boy and Timi wants ta be closer ta his mums rest’n place. Plus… I got an invite and able to set up shop from the git go, so…”. “But Suzail? The capital! It aint nothing like the Roar!” Shmedley spat out a bit red faced. “Nope it aint, hope’n it be better tho, hope’n we can do more for the people too. Me an Trix think so, better for Timi as well… not all the bad memories here. Fresh start… an after the generous invitation ta set up shop, hard ta say no. Already have a place, Trix and the boy are setting up things now. We said our good byes ta friends and neighbors, after this last wagon load… that’ll be it. Now ya give out those notes ta the ones I said if’n ya see ‘em and if ya have a gumption, the offer still stands… ya can come and join us..” Grit stated with confidence. Shmedley slurred with a huff “Grit, they don’ evn know me dere”. Grit gave him a wink and nod “Shmed… ya know, that may jus be a good thing”.

Open for Business

Grit watches the elderly lady leave through the door with a kerchief wiping at her eyes, with a huff he turns to his wife and shakes his head. “Nother lost cat! How can they be lost with so many about? Can’t help but trip o’vr one every place I go. Jus’ pick a new one up and be done with it. An’ it don’t help you leav’n that bowl o’milk outside for’em. Just encourages ‘em!” Grit states as he glares at his wife. “Now Grit, work is work and with us just relocating and starting again… customers are customers. You know you don’t always have to let your stubborn pride get in the way” she says offering him a placating smile.

Grit opens his mouth with a retort, changing his mind closes it and then changes the subject “Where’s Timi? I hav’n seen him all day, still hav’ chores ta do and I hav a meeting I hafta see about.” With a sigh Trixie explains “Grit you know he is at the orphanage, playing with his new friends. You told him he could go yourself this morning”. Grit opens his mouth to say something to that then closes it with “Hmmf”. “Speaking of the orphanage Mrs. Buttons mentioned those rats again getting into the kitchen cupboard and you did say you would see where they were coming from and trap them for her. Such a kind lady and all she has been through and all she does for the children and I know you don’t want anything happening to children” batting her big blue eyes Trixie stated in her most innocent voice and impish smile.

Grit glares at her for a minute longer with another “Hmmf” this time blowing his long mustache out a bit, “Well, cant be hav’n that, but I hav that meet’n, in part why we came and got these digs so cheap. Guess I can see bout hiring some ta look in’ta it for us. Can always use the log… sure we can scrounge a coup’l up for a small task.” Trixie gives him a wink and grin “Now that is a marvelous idea, somehow I knew you would come up with something.” All Grit could do was give another half-hearted “Hmmf” in surrender.

Grit sat back in his old chair nursing another glass of Fire Whiskey musing the days events while staring at the notes written in his journal. Old chair and journal, but new office… problems still the same and growing. They were brought to Suzail, set up in new digs to investigate and hopefully handle the problems. The question is he wondered, how does a hooded albino and some street kids fit into it all? Why try to abduct Timi and his friends and why were those rats in the orphanage? Didn’t make sense… only common theme, if there was one... were the rats. Mrs. Buttons said they had gotten worse of late and he had heard the complaints himself in the streets. The damn cats wouldn’t even hunt them. Thank Helm friends of old came for a visit and brought new ones along. If not for them, who knows what could have happened to Timi and the others.

He ruffled through the pages of his leather bound journal making some notations next to old names and adding some new ones to the list. “Always good ta see Alamor and Miss Polly, Timi tak’n a shine ta both of em and better yet both good ta the word and worth their salt. Those they brought with’em that Delvar, *small grin* he sure did seem ta like Tixie’s cookies and a curious one at that, Adrain and Runa both seem solid an’ I liked em both. Hope ta see more of em… hope they all be enuff, with what me bones tell’n is coming. If not, well… jus’ hav ta recruit some more.”

Grit downs the rest of his drink shaking his head as he mutters to himself “How do it all work tagether… or do it? Rats… a sickly albino with some street urchins and then there’s that body the othr’s found an brought me for… floating in the harbor was talk’d bout at the meet’n … Time will tell.”

Late in the afternoon when the fresh baked cookie aroma is at its peak, a messenger arrives at the Amador household to deliver a smallish fine wooden box and note. Announcing to the Amadors' that the package comes from High Mage Pollyanna of Valkurs Roar and is for the boy hero Timi, who he was told had saved his friends from an assault attempt recently with his quick thinking, bravery, and decision making.

The note reads:

Amadors'
I do hope all has been well, as promised to Timi as reward for his heroic acts and bravery is a basic sling, practice bullets of yarn, as well as a small stock of solid Shallybrook river rocks. This sling is actually the first sling I ever killed a Cormyrian rat with and now I wish hand down to Timi in hopes it will serve him as well as it did me.
I've heard is lucky to name a weapon and as you'll see by the engraving on this sling I had recently named this one.
(Etched along the leather strappings reads: "Rat Recker" and more recently added. "Rat-a-tat-tat")
I have also enclosed a list of instructions as to usage, care and safety as I know Trixie was concerned someone would lose an eye.
I'm sure Timi will take utmost care in his training and usage he has shown responsibility beyond his years many times and I'm sure will continue do so.

Working behind the counter and having few customers come Trixie was surprised when the messenger delivered a package, even more so when she heard who it was from. Opening and reading the attached letter her brow raised in slight concern and then mellowed to a small smile of gratitude “Just hope he doesn’t put his eye out or one of his playmates.” Just then Grit and Timi walked in from the living space of their quarters to the office, Grit noticing the letter and parcel in her hands asked “What’cha got there Trix more bills”? Glancing at Timi with a smile then handing it to Grit “See for yourself”. Grit took the missive and his smile became larger as his eyes scanned each word and then he read it again. “Well Timi, looks like this be for you.” Grit nodded to the small wooden box in Trixie’s hand as she handed it over to the boy. Timi took it quickly, but then hesitated as he looked at them both with a questioning look until they nodded for him to proceed. With great care the boy slowly opened the fine crafted wooden box as his brow shot up in excitement until he saw what it contained and a shout of elation escaped him. He looked up quickly asking “Miss Polly? Can I take it out?” “Course ya can lad it’s yours, aye Miss Polly” Grit nodded with a smile as he told him.

Laying the box on the counter Timi quickly withdrew the sling and started admiring it reading the inscription on the leather thongs he whispered “Rat Recker and Rat-a-tat-tat". He looked up at them in wonder, “Miss Polly nam’d it for ya Lad. A grand present from a powerful Lady an’ a name ta fit it. You take care of it now” Grit said. Timi quickly scanned the directions and looked at the arsenal or projectiles “Can I go try it out”? “Course ya can, be right out with ya” Grit chuckled as the boy scampered off and Trixie hastily called after him “Don’t put your eye out!”

Trixie looked at her husband as he prepared to follow the boy “That was very kind of Miss Polly, she has helped our family and Timi thinks very high of her”. Grit nodded to her with a slight frown as he headed out “Good ta’ave friends… think’n we gonna need em”.

Suzail: Street Urchins - Grab n Snatch

“Childr’n now I be’in asked ta capture chidr’n! Aint gonna do’it!” Grit stated in as close to a shout as Trixie had heard in quite some time. “Now Grit, the report says that they have been stealing from the market and snatching purses when they can and running off. The citizen are getting nervous and it seems organized. Something has to be done and if it’s not you… you really want to rely on another or a guard and their goodwill? Do you think they would be treated the same?” Trixie told him in a soothing tone. Grit blew his long-staches out with a sigh as he considered his wife’s words, seeing this Trixie continued “I remember a boy in my youth, these sound just like him and his friends if he wasn’t set right who knows where he would be… maybe even with his friend another lad I knew… taken to the gallows and never seen again”. The last said with misty eyes and a catch to her voice.

Grit looks at her with steel in his own and a small nod “Yep, coulda been, but others seen ta’it it wernt, beat it out of that lad… *wry grin* made ta work the docks, a turn or two at sea, then marriage and childr’n… the Guard. *Sighs* Aint gonna ‘appen again childr’n an the gallows not on my watch it aint. So what’cha think’n Trix? The docks and market is a large area ta watch… lotsa people and childr’n ta boot… an we are start’n ta be known here abouts, they would jus scatt’r an wait ta we left”.

Trixie awarded her husband with one of her radiant smiles “Well now that you ask, I just may have an idea or two”. Grit gave a small chuckle “I reckoned ya did… so what is it?” Trixie cleared her throat and explained “Well, you know how well Timi draws even better than he reads, almost life like… he could sketch out some of those he said accosted them before and the ones he and his friends talked about. We could call in some friends of our own and help canvas the area with sketches in hand to know who to look for. Perhaps we could even talk to Mrs. Buttons and see if the children could play about and nod in the direction if they see any… nothing confrontational of course. She would never want to see any harm come to a child, but I think she would want to help”.

Grit watched her for a silent minute or two letting her plan run through his head when he gave a nod and said “Yep, sounds right enuff. Think it jus’ may work. I’ll put the word out an we’ll see who comes… jus long as no childr’n get hurt. Aint gonna ‘appen on my watch”.

Suzail Docks – Pale Skin and Pink Eyes (Part 1)

Grit looks up from tending to Timi’s eye as Trixie walks into their quarters with a small smirk on her face as she notices what Grit is doing. “How things ov’r at the orphanage” he asked her as he held the wet rag to the boy’s face? “About the same, besides this morning’s ruckus. Mrs. Buttons has been keeping the girl Jill close that the others brought back and not letting her go out and about. She has her cleaned up like a nice little lady, hardly any dirt left on her. It would be hard to recognize her now than when she was first brought to Mrs. Buttons. Turns out she was a pretty young thing under all that dirt.“ Trixie exclaimed while smirking at Timi as the boy looked away scowling and would not make eye contact with her as he muttered something under his breath.

“What was that hun’ I couldn’t quite make out what you said” Trixie asked the boy. “Better not tell her that! She gets mad if’n ya tell her she looks better without all that dirt” the boy said in a huff pushing the rag away and pointing to his black eye. Both Grit and Trixie started laughing as Timi added “She pulls hair too!” “Well, what did you do when she did all that.. ya nev’a did say” Grit asked the boy. “Well I didn’t hit her that’s for sure… I don’t hit girls, you told me men don’t do that… and she is a Street-Rat after all… an we all stick together” the boy nodded earnestly as he explained. Grit and Trixie exchanged a worried glance and he replied “Aye real men don’t hit a woman that’s for sure, but we be in a new place now lad… and don’t know the lay o’land yet and who ta’be trust’n an’ya cant trus everyone .. even if they be a Steet-Rat. Now run off and wash up before supper”. Grit looks at Trixie with worry in his eyes “Well?”

Trixie pats Grit’s cheek and takes a seat on the couch next tom him saying “Mrs. Buttons did say that there has been some inquiries at the orphanage of late. Adventurers going off and looking to leave their young ones in safe hands until their return… but one, maybe two… but definitely one did not sit right with Mrs. Buttons. She has been watching over children for a long time and knows what she is about. She said a man came in asking for her service, he was going on a trek with others… after some lost treasure and wanted to leave his young ones with her and wanted to see the facilities. She said as she showed him that he seemed awful interested in the children there and asked several questions about new arrivals, but when she asked about his own… he seemed to change stories and even forget their names. Strange don’t you think?” Trixie told him with a frown.

“Yep, strange. Can’t be too cautious… but adventurers they are a strange and secretive lot… lets hope it aint nuth’n jus’that. Too bad the others weren’t able ta’get ahold of any o’those other yungins. Least they saved Jill… the steal’n died down mostly in the market… for now. I reckon it will start back up soon enuff. Howev’r that boy Bili Bluff, he been seen lurking about… but he’s not doing anything but look’n an nev’a been caught doing nothing neither, so…” Grit sighs with a shrug and then quickly adds as if just remembering “But! That pale one with the red eyes they tol’us bout… not rightly sure if’n ta be trusted… or how accurate, dock talk an all… but I was talk’n ta’some of the dock-hands… makin’me rounds… an they started talk’n bout em… said he been seen bout the docks for some time now… neva talks to em… hands or the sailors… jus watches the load’n an unload’n… says he been chased off a few times, but always leaves before any get a good look at em… cept for some white skin and pink or red eyes… depend’n who is doing the tell’n… anyways, wha really got my attent’un was the mention of him being seen talk’n with the street kids ‘round the warehouses and docks… an if one of em is right… said he seen him going in and out of the sewers before… different occasions too… now what’cha think bout that”?

Trixie smirked at his words and gave him a wink saying “I think we need to call some of our friends in and see if this Pale Skin and Pink Eyed man can be found before the stealing starts up again and something happens to one of those children”.
