Loot!

Can someone tell me the mechanics around loot?
I have been told that the loot spawns depending on the PC that opens it. I have checked with veteran players and DMs and this seems to be correct...but Some people seem to think that it is based on the Party, not the PC. They also claim that this has been told to them by a DM.
So just in case this comes up again, can someone please explain how the loot spawn works.

This is the kind of thing that probably won't ever be disclosed openly. Saying 'the optimal party is X people with Y conditions' or the like is going to encourage some amount of metagaming, or even general cheese. That said, looting can be set quite a number of ways, with or without randomization. The average player doesn't really need to know how it's computed and what variables, if any, are used.

They may both be right... I think I've read on the forums that there was a change in how it worked, but that not all areas were updated. How loot works (or, WHAT was that tiny bug carrying?):

In general and without disclosing much, newer areas or those older ones updated to "New Loot", are meant encourage party play, while still remaining ok for solo play. Greater rewards are to be had with a party however.
New Loot also deters farming by not scaling as default NWN loot does. This is why you will never find a level 9 scroll or so in evidently low level areas.

Thanks Mecha, does it matter who opens the loot in the party for these new/ old areas? This seems to be a talking point. It sounds like the answer is, sometimes?
Also just to let you know, from my experience loot is best when solo, when in party larger the 3/4 PCs the loot is significantly lower. I would expect this, but as you mentioned the loot was designed to encourage party play, I wanted to share.

From my perspective loot can never be better when going alone. Sure, not shared sum is bigger then shared one, but when you calculate all the expenses and everything, balance sheet will cry for at least one companion. Also you can't really "set things up" to get "best possible loot". And even if you could arrange it would be kinda meta.

I would expect this, but as you mentioned the loot was designed to encourage party play, I wanted to share. Unless I am wrong, it really matters not who opens containers. The loot comes from chests (loot tables) in a treasure room isolated somewhere in the server module. Each of these containers has a selection of items and when opened, one of these items is selected to drop for PCs. The containers are also divided by value of the loot and abundance/rarity, so they are linked to the general difficulty and Challenge Rating (CR) of an area that has previously established by builders, but not by character level.
The above is true for new loot areas, but in the old loot areas character level perhaps does affect the value of loot found.
It is true that for small dungeons and some outdoor areas, loot is probably better for soloers. However, in the larger, more difficult places, the balance favors parties (not going to say of what size or # of characters), because every single loot container opened in those locations yields more for parties than for soloers. Also just to let you know, from my experience loot is best when solo, when in party larger the 3/4 PCs the loot is significantly lower. LOL yeah... this is true.
One of the goals of the new loot is to deter farmers, but soloers should not be punished for soloing - if that is what they want to do, and as long as they are not cheating or exploiting. Even if there are some characters out there that can do it all, they are still taking huge risks by going alone. After all, no powerbuild defeats bad lag or crashes. Hence their individual share is generous to compensate the supplies spent and the risks they take.
