So whether on the phone or in passing Veterans at the hospital have been calling us heroes. Today as I was on my way back to the pharmacy, a Veteran saluted me saying we were heroes and surviving our own Vietnam. I was a bit taken aback but I told the Vet I thank you for your service.
I get the Vietnam reference. Soldiers had to go there even if they did not want to. They had to deal with viruses and other things.
Unless I am stricken with the virus I need to go everyday. My position duties do not allow me to work from home.
Was a nice compliment when you put it in perspective.
To me it has always been a bigger tragedy when the doctors and nurses get the diseases they treat. At the beginning of the pandemic, I read an interview with a nurse who had quit her job. She said she didn't want to put her own family in danger. Icould not fault her for taking that decision. But it puts things in perspective of all the medical personnel that choose to remain working in this kind of danger. So many nurses and doctors have died and are in critical condition. Not to mention having to work in such stressful conditions, with impossible decisions and lack of necessary materials. You are all heroes.

Well, it happened. We lost a relative (father's cousin) to Covid. She was in her 60s.
No family allowed with her when she died, no funeral service permitted. We can't even send flowers. I'm coming up with ways we can hold a virtual memorial and gift her children something permanent.
I feel for anyone going through this, it's cruel.

My deepest condolences. Was she a gardener? By a tree or a plant for each of the children to plant in there homes as a living tribute. Maybe make a video collage of pictures of her. It is cruel not even to have one member. Be thankful she was in your life.

I'm so sorry to hear that. And I know that not being able to gather family and friends in person just makes it worse for those remaining.

We'll probably plant a tree ourselves, we're discussing it. I think we may be arranging to send her family a rose quartz angel, more permanent than flowers and they'll be able to keep it.

And thank you for the thoughts, guys. I think when this is over, sadly a lot of people will be in the position of having had the virus or known someone who has and recovered; or as in this case, succumbed.
Got to keep our spirits up and keep going, when the dust settles there's going to be a lot of work to do.

...government interference ... I’m pretty sure we have passworded boards for political commentary. I’m also fairly certain this isn’t it.

Well, no, it's part of our new quarantine life. In the name of a virus we are asked to give up our freedoms. The problem will manifest itself when this covid mess is over, and the governments keep the power they took from us. And I really -really- hope it doesn't go that way. But for now, my house is clean! I just have to get the closets done, then do some painting, and weather permitting stain the decks! Our factory is still shut down, and presumably will remain so until May (so far). King Cuomo just made it into law that we have to start wearing masks in public. There have been no deaths from covid 19 in our county, and there have been 32 known cases...

I was just trying to frame the idea that people need to be told to wear pants outside with humor, and I apparently failed. But now I'm wondering if Bentin has ever wanted to chime in on some of the GG discussions about wearing pants.

I just think that things can get pretty emotionally charged, especially with a massive problem that strikes people straight in the face personally, both economically and with illness and death. I honestly don’t take offense, I was more thinking ahead and not wanting a thread that has been about supporting our fellow community members through this to devolve into something else in future posts.

Fair enough. I edited the wording on the post to something hopefully more innocuous.

Stuck being essential even though I have a compromised immune system, and vulnerable family members, thankfully I live in a detached portion of my house, luckily I'm naturally a shut in outside of being at work. Debating taking a leave of absence to bad bills won't slow down during this whole thing. Don't give up folks.

I am uncertain how the food handler, bus drivers and mail folk are creened they are just as essential as those like myself who work in the medical field

At this point, I wish I wasn't "essential"....but noooooooooooooooooooooo. You people -have- to have your cell phones! I just want a day off. Away from the weather and the gods forsaken chicken processing plant that's next to our current site. If you've ever smelled one before, and you think it's bad down there? You should get a whiff of it at roughly 200 feet above it, and down wind....

It is a bit tricky. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. I know a person whose daughter is a head ER nurse with a compromised immune system. She was exposed but did not get the virus. They are treating her to an old malaria drug. She is not getting an compensation from her employer nor able to get unemployment.
The legal process is probably long with the high numbers.
I know another person a specialized nurse. Where she works they take your temperature every day before you can start. If you refuse you can go home but not get paid.
I know another who actually has it (no I have not been near him for a long while) his company is paying him to recover.
So unless you work for local, state or federal government, in the outside sector you do not have as swift recourse.

I like how our goverment introduced measures. Whoever sacks or is unfair towards their employees, will not get any help from the state and if they were receiving help it will be cancelled.

This is one of those things where if it were me, I’d have no problem simply walking off the job. Unless they’re going to shoot me, Coronavirus can impose a much higher consequence. You probably also don’t want my employment history, but better to send out resumes after the crisis than to die from the virus.

Words, they can heal and they can hurt. Many times people hurt without meaning to. In a work place all employees are essential, a part of the team. Yet the new buzz word for those still working is "essential" We should rethink that. The label "non- essential" can really strike an arrow to through the heart of an employee whose position could pose a health risk Some of these "non-essential" may be getting benefits from their employers but many are not. Some have been forced to try and find work as an "essential" employee to make ends meet..
They are the forgotten heroes.

My husband and I are sick again. It feels the same as the last time - shortness of breath, dizziness, dry cough (now he has the cough as well). It's the third time for me, it's the 2nd time for him.
WTF?!

Here on the news they have been saying that nobody yet has tested positive again after recovering and they are wondering if recovering once makes you immune. So are you saying all these sicknesses have been confirmed covid-19?

Bummer Mandene. Unfortunately it can return once some one "has recovered"
Depends on immune system and exposure. If not already check lungs for maybe pneumonia. Positive healing vibes

I've been reading (and hearing anecdotally from people I know) that a lot of them have been sick twice. One of them had been in Milan in the early days when Italy had started to get it. I've also read somewhere already in March, that a guy that was tested and had no corona, was tested some time later and the virus had grown in him again. So, you need to be retested after a while to be sure that it goes away and doesn't come back. And I don't think anyone is actually doing it.
On another note - no, I haven't been tested so i can't be 100% sure it's covid. We don't have enough tests in Sweden to test everyone either. I can only go on the symptoms. I've never had a cold like this before. I've had in the past difficult flu that ended up in pneumonia (actually twice in my lfie) - this ain't it.
