I apologize if there was already a thread, I did my best to skim twice on the front and second page. But like the subject says, hobbies, what are they? what do you all like to do to occupy time when you aren't gaming (not that gaming can't be a hobby. I enjoy working on jackets, legitimate 100% real cotton, preferably, of any color really, but that is more dependent on what someone asks me to do when they give me a jacket to sew on. I may have moved past my much more punk phase in my slightly younger adult years. But I still very much enjoy wearing and sewing on jackets still, battle jackets/vests, to use that term. I will, as aforementioned, make them for people that hand me the supplies and patches. But I also enjoy making them for myself or just for practice, that end up being used on Halloween for example. My favorite colors to run across or dye the denim is first and foremost, black, secondly is dark grey, but I am also content with dark dirty blue. My music taste is usually in black metal more these days, so a lot of the patches reflect that love for the genre. Especially the back patches. Some examples of my work are included. Work, more or less amounting to me -buying- the jackets and patches and just sewing them on by hand. The -first- battle vest I ever made, and it certainly shows, both in construction and filth (thankfully you cannot smell it). I used a poorly manufactured Rude label denim vest, when they were sold at hot topic. To be honest, 3 or 4 patches alone cost more than the vest. The studs are rusty because I did not take the time nor wish to invest the money at the time in studs made from better material. Either way, I am continue to salvage patches off of it recently to prepare it as a burnt offering. The Vest below was made to get more practice, and by the gods I need all I can get, this time, stud placement was also something I was practicing, these studs were made of the same poor metal, I plan to use this vest more for Halloween or costume themed events. Another older jacket I was working on, as you can see, it is not a battle vest with out the extreme punk and metal classics.

I make tie dyes. They're weird and expressive and abnormal and make people turn their heads and stare at them with this really weird expresson and go "What the..?". Just like me.

Because I will begin re-constructing one jacket and other punk/metal related clothing endeavors, I decided to post a list of places I go to buy things. r/battlejackets distro listPatchNoir was another cool shop, seen on the list, it was down for a while but I found PatchNoir again on etsy. Also seen on the list, are other frequented stores for me, Cultpatches666 and Mextremista. As for nice denim to sew on and patch, like I said above, second hand shops and other shops like it are GREAT, sometimes better than some online stores, because the denim is vintage, made with quality in mind. So the denim is thicker and sturdier. Great if you don't mind a good mosh pit. And lastly, progress on a recently stripped clean vest will be posted soon. I have purchased a cool screen-printed Darkthrone backpatch!

Aside from video games?
I GM a Pathfinder game, so occasionally I spend 6 or 8 hours working on an NPC when I've got an idea for one, or for revising one. I type them up in OpenOffice, using a two-column layout and trying to make sure each one takes up no more than a page. If they're simple NPC grants, sometimes I can fit two to a page, or more--my skeletons and zombies are both four to a page--but my boss NPCs generally take up both columns by themselves. I stat them using 6.5 pt. Arial font, usually, though if I really need to squeeze because that one line wants to go to the next page, I think I've dropped as low as 6.3 pt. before. If I have a little left-over space, I'll try to include a small (0.5"x1") image of the creature, usually the art from the Bestiary. Getting it all to fit on one page is the real challenge. If I have to run over to a second page (as has only happened once that I recall), I try to fill as much of that page as well.
I also paint metal miniatures. I don't paint on them too often, but I have a half-dozen "in progress" miniatures sitting out on my mantle. Occasionally I'll walk by them and think "Hmmm. I could just put a little more green on that one" or "That needs a touch-up" and end-up just standing there painting at my mantle for an hour or two. Occasionally I decide that one is finished, but they can live in states of "almost done" for months on end as they get refined more and more.
I also write. Much like my miniature painting, my writing is never quite done. I've been writing a long-form fiction for a few years now, and have surpassed 100k words. It's "almost done," but that's just the first draft. (I'm going to have to cut stuff, I know.) Most of it is handwritten in notebooks too, so another part of my experience of it is typing it onto the computer, which involves an editing pass. I still have three notebooks of it that I haven't typed yet. I type it all into UltraEdit in the order it was written. Then, later, as a separate activity, I copy&paste those dated entries into Scrivener and arrange them in chronological story order. This is also an editing pass, more focused n continuity. I keep my character notes in Scrivener (trial version), as well as some details on the world setting and linguistic quirks of the setting, so I make adjustments related to those things at that time. I haven't been to the local creative writing group for awhile, but when I get back from those meetings with my marked-up copies of writing excerpts, I go through those, mark-up my own copy with all the revisions and suggestions I want to keep, then make those changes in Scrivener. I have mostly been doing the writing in the notebook recently as I haven't installed Scrivener on my new (3 months old) computer yet. I still have two excerpts to make changes from whenever I get Scrivener installed again, and I printed one story excerpt to take to a meeting that I never took because I read it and wasn't happy with it, so I've got a copy of that I've marked-up to make changes as well, before I print it again for the group.
I also watch a lot of TV. I used to be a big movie fan but more recently I'm just not as into movies as I used to be. Now I'm more into serialized TV shows than movies.
I'd like to say I read, but I don't read as much as I like. I used to read a lot but over the last decade I barely read. Now I tend to read RPG sourcebooks often, but I don't read novels as much as I'd like. I've got a stack of novels that are still pending to be read but I don't like to read more than one novel at a time and I just can't seem to finish The Dark Tower Series. I'm about halfway through the seventh book, but I've been reading the series for more than seven years and don't have much motivation to finish. I tell myself "It's just another six hundred pages" but the motivation isn't there. There are technically eight books in the series now, counting Wind Through the Keyhole, but my understanding is that one is optional, and I'm probably going to take my option not to read it. I really want to be done with the series so I can start Master of Devils, by Dave Gross. It's the second novel about half-elf investigator Count Varian Jaggare and his Hellspawn (tiefling) bodyguard Radovan. I've read Prince of Wolves, the first book, and it was really very good. I already own the second (Master of Devils), third (Queen of Thorns), and fourth (King of Chaos) books, but I don't own the fifth (Lord of Runes). Each is a self-contained story though, so it's not like The Dark Tower where it's all really just one super-long story. I'd also like to read Death's Heretic, by James L. Sutter. I had a Pathfinder Tales subscription for awhile, so I've got that one in a little stack too. But, again, I don't really read novels anymore, at least not until I finish The Dark Tower...eventually.

I grow hot peppers for fun (Everything from Carolina Reapers to hot bananas). As you can imaging, most folks do not trust me when I say, "Hey try this!". I also competitively cook BBQ. I love Aquatics and had a business back in 1992 (Currently have four tanks and a pond). I am a rock hound....nuff said. I guess that I should also add Poetry, music and B-movies to the list.

My hobbies include:
Being a stay at home mom Making doodles for no reason but to make doodles and practice art. Playing other video games outside nwn (because significant other says I can't be sassy all the time.) Listening to music that ranges from 80's rock to indi-rock/ metal. But also Japanese styled music, videogame music, stuff that fits the mood I have for that moment. Because I need music in everything. And reading books when I remember "Hey I started this book then stopped all of a sudden. I should go finish it."

Reading, everything. From instruction manuals to novels, collecting books, (just over 2k with twelve more FR books incoming yay me), collecting video games, generally old systems, (everything from coleco-vision up to ps4), filling out the old systems libraries (only one completed so far is the sega genesis, sega CD, and 32x collection) been playing pokemon since it released to western audiences (I have monsters older then some of my coworkers.), building computers, repairing computers (and other assorted electronics), disemboweling computers for spare pieces, collecting and maintaining expensive sharp objects, writing here and there, getting lost in my imagination and staring at a wall for hours.

I haven't drawn in a while but I'm pretty good at it. Scribbling random goofy things in Windows Paint is what I do atm and I doubt I'll ever be anything but silly with that. Here's a few examples. During the winter, I was cold and I'm -supposed- to be wrapped up in a blanket like a burrito but it looks more like a toilet paper roll I guess. Someone wanted me to show them a face pic so I gave them this instead.
I was listening to Metallica's King Nothing when I did this. "Where's your crown, King Muffin?"
I also like playing piano/keyboard. I should probably try following sheet music instead of just playing by ear. I like watching movies, especially horror even though I turn my head at certain things like hooked chains going into people. B-movies are the best, especially if Herbert West is involved. I'm weird enough to catch interesting wild animals such as mice (that I have actually gifted to my cats so they could play with them), birds, shrews... which are very LOUD and have the softest fur ever, snakes and even a Red-Tailed Hawk that was injured on the side of a road close to home which was taken to a nature center to be helped. I bird watch and enjoy gardening too. I listen to music a lot and feel no need to explain what I like since I do a good bit of damage to the music thread. I like glass stuff, especially vintage things like this sky blue Fenton candy dish.

Reading ... just about anything. My fiction tastes (unsurprisingly) tend towards science fiction and fantasy. Though the sciences are preferred, I'll read any non-fiction that catches my interest - news headlines, a stray comment from an acquaintance, or even something overheard at a bus stop can get me researching a subject. Photography was a keen hobby of mine for a time (yeah, weird for a near-blind guy I know). Back when I was working at a local university, I was the one taking screenshots of computer screens (yes, this was back in the days before quality, affordable colour printers) for theses productions or for portfolios. I was even asked to take a set of campus and Perth landscape shots for the School's publicity materials for our prospective overseas students. The only photo I have hanging up at my place at the moment is an enlargement of one of those shots - the Perth skyline at evening from the southern river shore. Horseriding! I loved it; among other things, it (partly) satisfied my Y-chromosone driven need for speed. Sadly, my back and neck don't let me do that any more (no, I didn't get hurt riding). I can't recommend riding enough for anybody who hasn't tried it. And, of course, computer games. NWN isn't a viable option for me - not until we get better font control with NWN:EE (and it'd be REAL nice to be able to move the chat window to the top-of-screen). The only RP fixes I get are in SW:ToR and NW - neither of which compares to FRC of course.

Apologies for the slight thread necromancy! For those interested in my hobby, or want to get into it, or just like crust punk and want to score a nice sweatshop free, legitimate band merch shirt or back patch; nightgaunt studios is once again open. There are a few designs that will retire by july 1st, so grab 'em while you can if it's something you want! www.grimmtowers.com/There is also some Sleep and Pagan Altar shirts and back patches as well!

I read a lot. Mostly fantasy and scifi for novels, but I read comic books too. I have been since before I started Kindergarten. I also watch too much television, but I don't know if that counts as a hobby. Lastly, I draw. I'm not good enough to make a living at it, but I can do better than stick figures at least. Anyone interested in checking my art out can follow the link... www.deviantart.com/artdewdThere's even some NWN inspired art on there. (Oh, fair warning, there is some mature themed art on there but it is in it's own folder so easily avoided if desired)

I really enjoy the minimally patched jackets and vests as I get older. It may not be extensive work like I used to do when I was in my mid teens to late 20's, but it's very therapeutic sewing on a long sought after band patch, or fixing a seam with dental floss to really make sure you don't have to fix it again.

This is not my vest, and there is a picture of the front, which is even better than the back. But I thought, some extreme music fans -and- Simpsons fans could both enjoy this D-beat style Simpsons battle vest. Just to give many of you an idea of where creativity can take you in making one of these vests. It does not just -have- to be extreme music, make a Goth vest or jacket, make one that is 8-bit music inspired, make a country one, there really is no limit. Image is Safe for Work, but is hidden by spoiler because it's a -big- image.

Two new ones. Black panther, first attempt. A few errors, and I should have put the pink around the black instead of the indigo. But overall it survived. Captain America, second attempt. Much better, but I won't do one this large again. It was literally painful.

You do beautiful work that put a lot of my attempts to shame. I look forward to seeing even more of it! Additionally thank you for contributing to this thread as much as you do! It's always wonderful to see the hobbies and pastimes of players on this server. It helps build friendships and bond people over shared activities and appreciation of many different artistic mediums (painting, playing music, etc) as well as things like athletic prowess, or impressive use and knowledge of technology. My favorite hobby doesn't have a cool view factor. I like saving "dated" things from extinction. If you wait long enough, dated becomes "retro" . Most things me and my husband are saving are "dated", however our kitchen table from the 50s has become "cool", retro breakfast nook table. 2 years ago we moved into an 80 year old house, that a family has lived in from the 70s. Lots of stuff there is "dated" and considered uncool. We're not going to rip those out (including my 80's kitchen ceiling, and 90s shelving). One of the things we've saved is my husband's families' kitchen chairs. I don't have true before and after pictures, but recently we got hold on one chair that has been "left behind" (forgotten somewhere). So, here it is: Before After (reapholstered - both the "stuffing" and the fabric, removed old polish, cleaned, reaffixed legs and parts, new polish)
Note the difference in polish color. you don't have to paint all things that are "old wood". Old polish became yellow with age, new ones are nice and clear. The two chairs together:

Not a terribly exciting, and in some cases kind of gross update. But hey, whatever you find therapeutic and helpful that can double as a hobby and activity, is great right? Up first is a pair of pants I purchased in 2010 and started wearing in 2016 for work, From there, they were worked to the point of falling apart and disintegrating...I could not bring myself to throw them away for some bizarre reason. So, I decided to make myself, my very last pair of crust pants. I don't really want to do much with them beyond keep filling them with patches of fabric as holes and other damage appears. I plan to eschew adding band patches to them, though that embroidered patch symbol for the warhammer universes chaos god nurgle - would look pretty cool on 'em. Next up, I have my battle jacket for concerts/shows. I am still not sure what to do for a backpatch after the last one was damaged. I recently started adding more pins as well because I hardly go into mosh pits anymore. The older you get, the clearer it is that mosh pits - are a young mans game.

Since D&D is my hobby I guess this is a good a place to post about this as any. I'm the DM for my current session and one of my players is a pretty cool cat. For this Christmas he got all of us gaming dice vaults from Wyrmwood with their PC's names carved into them. As I was the DM, he snuck about and asked my spouse that if I wanted one, which character name would I have liked on it. The spouse answered correctly . . . Chose the right type of wood (Purple Wood) and right kind of colored dice. I have a happy ^_^ And, yes, this absolutely is bribing the DM. He'll be getting the Sheath of Return that he's wanted his PC to have for a while now.

My hobby actually developed from dnd. I love fencing and sword based martial arts to be truthful. I dabbled in many sword styles over the years and some traditional styles of fighting because dnd motivated such from me. Also helped me flush out concepts for characters and how they move. These days since am older I know I have taken a step back from it because life. But, I still practice 16th century back-sword work every now and then.

Late but I’d like to give my 2 cents to this after all. My workout became one of my hobbies and part of my health stuff at the same time. When I was till losing weight I started by taking walks, building up some stamina. Then I always increased time and speed. In the end i worked out like crazy, around 3 or 4 hours each day. Part of it was race walking. I get quite the looks, since I’m the only walker around here. Everyone else prefers running or Nordic walking. But this is the best for my knees since the movement is not too hard. It might look pretty gay, I know, but I don’t care since it helps so it’s kinda liberating, too. At the moment I work towards keeping my weight and that’s the hardest part - to prevent the Yo-Yo effect. But it works just by still working out four times a week. If the weather isn’t too bad I also still do my walking. It also help to get some sun and fresh air. Another pretty controversial hobby is cooking and baking. The reason is, it supports my change of diet. If you cook and bake your food yourself you have the control, which Ingredients you use. You can calculate how big the portions should be. If there’s no more food, you sure can’t eat more and don’t gain weight again. So there’s no more frozen pizza on my table even. Otherwise I read mangas and fantasy books sometimes. I watch a lot of series and animes. I listen to music, nearly anything except techno and Bavarian folk music. One can scare me off with the Latter. Alongside playing in FRC I also play MMOs with my husband sometimes. Without “disturbing “ RP, which is not his cup of tea. But I love it, so if i want to rp, I play here.

My life revolves around work (data center security), my family (wife, kid,4 cats and a dog) and gaming. I also try to keep sharp in skillls from my old life; any medical or communication training I can get for free, and range time. I used to be big into milsim airsoft, but time and resources got in the way.
