I have a character whom I think I'd like to try to become a Purple Dragon Knight (including the IC aspect), but I guess my main concern is any level-based window of opportunity. I gather that the Greatgaunt Volunteers is one of the best ways to set oneself up for recognition and opportunity with the Purple Dragons, in which case it seems like I'd have to plan and restrict my character's level progression around that, to an unknown extent. I'd like some input on this, please.

Hi Misty, Great question. Achieving this is a high aspiration and I look forward to seeing the pursuit.
From FRC's server rules - To break this down a bit, we have a few considerations: Purple Dragon, Knighthood, and Prestige Class.
Purple Dragon - FRC offers the Royal Corps of Monster Hunters (RCMH) Guild as a means to join Cormyr's army, the Purple Dragons. While in character in game you should be able to inquire after the Purple Dragons and RCMH, establish contact, and apply to join. Characters who have the right stuff may earn their way as a squire to join the Crown's elite Monster Hunters. Participating in the Greatgaunt Volunteers or Valkur's Roar reserves and earning rank & commendations there may help one be accepted as an RCMH Squire, but this isn't required or guaranteed.
Knighthood - Knighthood is the an honor bestowed by an authority in game which means your character is sworn to serve that authority and has accomplished something to earn the honor of that title. There are a few knighthoods that have been portrayed in game over time including religious & paladin orders, noble houses like House Thundersword seeking retainers, and the Crown. Knighthood from the Crown is required to take the Purple Dragon Knight Class on FRC. There isn't a formula to earn that honor and it isn't guaranteed. It is something that requires a lot of roleplay effort over time, dedication, and luck. Note: A character does not have to be a Purple Dragon to earn a Knighthood from the Crown, but one must be a Purple Dragon and have a Knighthood from the Crown in order to become a Purple Dragon Knight.
Purple Dragon Knight Prestige Class - Taking the class has one final hurdle, and that is requesting approval from the DM Team. This is a validation step to make sure all of the above is lined up along with the prestige class prerequisites.
It's a big undertaking but it offers a rich and challenging roleplay experience along the way. There is as much or more magic in the journey than in the arrival, but if you get there a very substantial character has been established. Only a few folks have made this journey so far. Aim high and your character may be counted among them.
Good luck!

Thanks. I think it's likely the most natural path for my character to travel regardless, but there are some aspects I need to explore more fully, which I can probably do IC.
