Yes, The Black Company. IMO people should not only take aesthetic inspiration from those books but character and story-telling inspiration as well.

Yes, part of a series written by Glen Cook called The Black Company. Glen Cook's Works He's great and prolific, I really enjoyed his Starfishers SF series as well.
