Gardrak teleports over to the Tethys. "You signaled us," he asks, "We captured the girl that was poisoning our crew on the Tub. I have effectively neutralized her. Before doing so I interrogated her and acquired all of the information necessary as to why she did the deed and who put her up to it. If your saboteur is still alive I would like to add him to my collection." ""Collection?""The Zakharan Captain looks the dwarf over with a grimace. "He's our prisoner and he'll be staying here. You know these are people you're discussing, right? I don't know what you did to her but I can imagine I'd be appalled" He shakes his head "Please go back to your own ship and inform Ahmed or your captain that I'll discuss the prisoners with them when the time is right. No further discussion is necessary until then. You can also let them know we're getting underway soon and to prepare to do the same." After the dwarf is gone, he looks around at his crew "That's one creepy dwarf..." General murmurs of agreement. "I want us to get underway as soon as possible, pass our thanks to Captain Melkabbar and send that bottle of Athkatla red from my cabin over with our compliments. Wish him safe voyage and good trading."

After hearing how appalled Neckan would be Gardrak retorts, "Best that I turned her to stone and keep her safe with me than viciously murdering her like many of the crew. All she wanted to do was help her mother which I plan on doing after we are successful with our trip. However, I'm sure I'll be appalled by what you do with your prisoner and will be watching you all very closely. Think on that sir."
With that he teleports back to the Tub.

A couple of books are teleported over to the Tub by Jasper with a note for Kathy.
Kathy,
Thought you'd like something different to read, you must have gone through all the books you've got now while looking after that accursed bird. These logs are from my first voyage with Admiral Blake, my adopted father. We sailed the waters around Kara-Tur, a very rare voyage. As you know my real father was from Zakhara but my mother was what he described to me as a "white Shou witch" he captured...so I was interested in stories of the great empire at the time. Feel at leisure to share with any fellow mages, they may find the entries on Shou's wizards interesting.
regards Neckan.
The first page of the log, written in an 11 year-old's scrawl reads "Admiral Blake says...between Kara-Tur and Faeroon(sic) is a huge wall of stone, they call it the Dragonwall. The story tells, a wu jen wizard was ordered by the Shou emperor to find a way to keep the Tuigan savages from raiding the northern lands...the wu jen stole a Jade Mirror from the huge sea dragon Pao Hu Jen. The wu jen lured the dragon on a chase along the border of the northern lands and suddenly stopped and held up the Jade Mirror to the dragon's eyes, which instantly turned him to stone. The emperor has his craftsman build strong stone around the body of the dragon to make the great wall..."
The logs go on in a similar vein, detailing Shou Lung society and the events of the voyage through the young Neckan's eyes.
Meanwhile on the Tethys the Captain is making ready to set sail and ordering his mage to lower the mists as soon as the Redeemer departs.

Soon, the Redeemer departs and sets a southwestern course, and the expedition vessels continues westwards towards Maztica. The next five days are pleasantly uneventful, and those poisoned have mostly recovered. The boy Fodoric remains locked in the brig, while the girl Ravace is safely tucked away in Gardrak's bag of holding. On the tenth day since leaving Semport, and more than twenty days since leaving Athkatla, the Tethys has managed to catch two days worth of fish with their net. The Tethys continues its voyage of discovery through the night, waves lapping at its bow and the light of the moon stretching languorously across her deck, a certain serenity at odds with the danger and excitement of the day, and perhaps obstacles yet to be faced. And if the casual observer follow one particular moonbeam as it passed the diligent crew on night shift, sweeping down the stern side of the vessel and through a circular port hole they would see it finally alight on the figure of the slumbering second mate of the ship, lying in his bunk below deck.
As the moon bathes Yarrick in its light, bed rocking gently with the sway of the sea, pendants tightly gripped in his twitching left hand, the grizzled seaman stirs, but not, as a mere onlooker might suppose from the dazzling caress of the lunar lamp which shines upon him. No, it is the faces and voices that speak to him in his dreams that disturb his gentle slumber.
Voices and faces that are familiar to him, for tonight his dreams are visited by his old, dead crewmates; speaking, cursing , taunting, jesting as they did years before. Jealous or perhaps piteous of him as he continues the mariners life as they rest below the waterline.Dancing and weaving to the rhythmic roll of the Tethys as it bobs on the ocean waves, each ghost has its turn.
First is young Jerry the cabin boy on the Aquius, just a slip of a lad he was, 12 years old. Never to grow older, as the boy, up in the rigging with Yarrick attending to repairs on the mainsail, was caught off balance by a gust of wind and violent wave and lost his footing, cracking his skull on the side of the ship before falling beneath the foamy waves. The same face they pulled from the brine faced him now bloated from the water, the left side of the skull caved in from the injury, eyes though wide with surprise and betrayed trust.
"You'll look after me sir, ye said you would make sure I was safe to the Cap'n...."
The youth's face suddenly aged, twisted and contorted with anger, rage and brutality as Yarrick recognised his next visitor "Hadrin you thieving bastard!" snarled the sailor at this second apparition. The same jutting scar, leading from his temple down to his neck on his dark, scowling weather-beaten face. This physical deformation was joined by two piercing wounds in his abdomen caused by Yarrick's knife in a dispute over a card game. The scuffle occurred after the Ocean Snake had earned a fair share of plunder from the Westgate trading vessel, the crew finding ways to gamble away the plunder they had earned. Yarrick had accused him of dealing from the bottom of the deck, offence was taken, blades were rawn and the vicious tempered corsair ended with two pricks in his belly.
"You dirty murderin' squib-bucket Yarrick. I'll be havin' yer soul fer this!"
"Wasn't murder, you filthy, stinkin' son of a kraken. I was just quicker with me knife.."
As quick as a flash the figure lunges at Yarrick before dissipating into the ether, another form taking his place. This time an older man, black hair and proud moustache flecked with grey, sporting a fine red knee-length coat. Except...his head lies at 90 degrees to his body, neck snapped by the noose that hangs around it still. Captain Dooley of the Fishwife, he'd pushed his crew too far working them to the bone, taking risks sailing close to pirate waters, skimping on rations, so they'd lost crew through attacks and disease. Still he wouldn't listen, willing to put their lives at risk for ever greater profits. So mutiny occurred, and even though Yarrick had been his First Mate, he aided the weak, weary yet enraged crew as Captain Dooley was dragged to the crow's nest , his twitching corpse left dancing in the wind for two days after they'd hung him.
"Traitor Yarrick..traitor" the loose, lolling head spoke to him, "You were my First Mate..."
And then between them danced a lithe, female form smiling at him in delight. Grinning back at the ghost of Bessie Hagan, Helmswoman of the Emerald of the Deep, he clutched and span her round, reminiscent of the beginning of numerous amorous encounters they had aboard that ship.
"Hmm..here's something you've not seen in a while lover-boy," she said lifting up her frock up above her knees and up to her chest. Yet Yarrick's look changed from lust to horror as it revealed merely the giant gash caused by the cutlass of the pirate that cut deep into her belly, on an excursion just past Procampur, one month after she'd informed him with delight that she was with child. As he reached out to touch her Bessie, her brown eyes, strawberry blond locks, and despoiled stomach disappeared into the mist...
And finally there was Charley the cook aboard the Tethys. Cold dead eyes staring out, reddened neck still burning raw. His small form held a ladle in one hand, a steaming pot in the other.
"Another helping for you Yarrick?" Said the small hin. "It's good for what ails you...". And only then did Yarrick see the contents of the cooking pot, a bloody red mess of rotten guts and tripe.
It is perhaps just as well Yarrick awoke with a start from his tortured dreams, beads of sweat glistening on his brow, head looking around the room warily. Below deck was placid and calm, accompanied only by the snoring of fellow sailors, yet Yarrick still felt uneasy as he clutched at his holy symbols and then, turning to his primary source of comfort, taking a swig from a bottle of sea-foam rum.
"Dreams like that, it don't bode well for the voyage," He said quietly to himself as the pale shaft of moonlight crossed his bald head. "Mark my words, that's a bad omen."
And with that, the casual observer would see the second mate return to his cot, yet unsoothed by any further sleep during the night.
//More of a mood-setting piece of creative writing than a part of plot development but hope you enjoy reading it. Sorry for any liberties I've taken.

Old Luc
An older, wiry sailor sits in the galley peeling potatoes, he is called Old Luc and looks to be about 60 years of age with two front teeth missing and a bandana across his bald head. Anyone enquiring would be told Old Luc served with the Captain since his first command and has been with him ever since, he is known to be tough and wise. Blake has him doing less active work as he's got older, working with Ajax in stores and now taking over as galley cook. Old Luc's son, Young Luc can be seen on deck and is the spit of his father. Old Luc doesn't want to stay ashore and wants to die at sea and the Captain has a pact with him that he may stay on whatever vessel Blake is serving on until he can no longer work or passes away.
Old Luc's tattoo reveals a legend "A life without walls."
Bawdy Songs and Crab-Racing
The crew of the Tub may hear a Tethys tradition in quieter moments as the two ships cruise side-by-side. Male and female crew members lining up to sing the worst, most bawdy and funny songs to mock the opposing singer. The battle is won when an agreement is clear on who got the most laughs. Any disagreements are met with a bucket of cold seawater. Even the Captain joins in.
Crab races on the quarter deck are held in the evening with bets and favors being taken on the winners.
Fishing
The Captain is seen on his own with a hookah, smoking Shisha as he watches from under a canopy in blazing sunlight. The crew indulge in some fishing off a skiff. When the sun is not so fierce on the oddly-pale - for a Zakharan - foreigner, the Captain takes to his own skiff and does a little line fishing alone. A bottle of ale rests on the side and he slips into peaceful solitude, gazing at the sea and sky like a dreamer.
He returns with his catch and remains aft, studying the sky at night with a telescope and mapping star positions in a notebook, instructing and giving lessons in navigation to younger members of the crew.

Old Luc posts the menu to the Tub for the guests to read. He hums as he makes preparations for the meal and also ropes in some extra hands for the deck feast that will be going on for the crew at the same time as the dinner below. The Tethys buzzes with activity "Double rum and ale rations for the night, Cap'n's order's." The Menu Starter
Luc's Mussel Soup
- A creamy mussel soup.
Or
Luc's Spiny Bread Toasted with Bock-marinaded Ground Beef Spread. ___________________________________
Main Course
Coconut Fish Curry
- A creamy fish curry.
Or
Roasted Preserved Pork with all the trimmings.
- Seasoned with herbs and garlic ___________________________________
Dessert
Luc's Blowfish Surprise.
- It's a surprise. ____________________________________
Wines or ales available on request.
Aboard the Tethys, the Captain opens the door to his dining room "Alright, let's get this room cleared up, not used it since Commodore Kneehorn was aboard. What a night... drunk as a Lord..." The room is cleaned, tidied and made ready. Glass, crystal and metal are polished and gradually the room takes on a look of glamor in readiness for the dinner.

Somewhat amused, Ahmed would reply "Then I suppose... a change in clothing is in order. Keep her together while I'm away acting Captain."

After Ahmed departs the tub. "Let's keep the ship sailing straight and easy. Also tell the cook to make something special if he can muster it. No reason we can enjoy the night air some. No drinking for those who are to be on shift for the night watch and I don't want any hung over sailors or this will be the only time I allow this." Would return to the wheel after giving her little speech to the crew present who she assumes will pass the word.

Night falls and dinner is served on the Tub and Tethys.
Sometime later on the Tub, a huge blue whale is spotted bobbing on the surface, like it was dead, just drifting aimlessly. Watching it, some sailors note that it's not just drifting around, it's steadily coming closer, and when it does they can see it is a bloated, pale and rotten, creature. Its eyes have long ago fallen out and its bones are visible under tattered skin covered by seaweed and barnacles. Yet it still moves closer to the Tub. When it is close enough that one can feel its horrid stench, it opens its mouth.
The sailors lift their lanterns to look closer, and then they see, that in the mouth of the whale, stands a man.

Before the dinner, the Captain showed them around the vessel and introduced them to some of the crew and toured some areas of interest in the ship, namely a forge contained in a reinforced stern room that carries out onboard repairs to the metalwork aboard the vessel, a long room gallery that doubles as a corder's room, where fibers are strung on long mechanisms to be twisted into ropes. The gallery is decorated with portraits of ships from the same company, there are 13 in all, the Tethys it would appear is the youngest of the vessels.
In the dining roon by candlelight, another portrait hangs among maps, artifacts, drawings and other paintings, of the ship and Tethys herself. A half-naked blonde the Captain refers to as a "sea nymph" the shipwright was enamored with and insisted the vessel be named after.
With wine flowing freely, the dinner begins and each course is served on the company china which bears a seashell and a black compass star. Heavy leaded crystal goblets, silver cutlery and glossy china glint in the light from two large candlesticks finely crafted to show fruit and vines curling around a pillar on each. The Captain explains the candlesticks were "freed" from the hoard of a medusa the crew found in a cave. What does a medusa need with candlesticks anyway, he wonders.
Luc's cooking is traditional and delicious, the guests have a choice of which meal they'd like from the menu, the remainder going up to the crew members who are still on duty and missing the feast on deck. A small portion is sent to the prisoner in the brig who is shown to be playing cards with his guard.
The Captain is an experienced host, chatty but also attentive and if his guests want anything he makes an effort to get it for them. He tells them the company and church he belongs to is often scattered across the world but when they meet they have dinners just like this to exchange news and stories. He admits sometimes the Captains play pranks on each other and have a friendly rivalry, these antics can carry on for years and become epic stories, he appears to have a "feud" going on with a brother Captain called Jellico who insists they have a shooting match with crossbows every time they meet to prove Neckan is a worse shot that he is. Jellico, he insists, is worse and couldn't hit "a whale if it was in front of him and if he did he was probably drunk!".
Luc's final course, Blowfish Surprise is served and the Captain seems delighted as he hasn't had it in years. A large blowfish crafted of sugar is delivered in on a platter, the Captain bids them to watch as he spears it with a silver spike and it deflates to reveal it's a dessert of layers of chocolate cream, sponge soaked in a fine wine and crisp baubles that add a crunch to the smoother textures. The dessert is served out in dishes.
As the conversation continues and the Captain enjoys his dessert the smell of the whale reaches him and he frowns, looking out the decorated window of the dining room. "I know that stench...something died..." He looks at one of his men at the door. "I think we better take a look."
Excusing himself from the table, he treads out to see what is going on.

The figure standing in whale's mouth motions and the clearly dead whale turns to move alongside with Tub, easily keeping pace. As sailors aboard shine their lanterns towards new arrival, man's bald, tattooed head and bone-white skin become clearly visible.
A voice carries across water with dry, amused tone: "Are you going to slow down, or do you expect your captain to fly aboard?"

As Tub begins to slow down, Licios steps out of whale's mouth and begins to walk towards ship across water as dead whale dives back beneath and disappears. Reaching Tub's side, he waits until rope is lowered and climbs aboard. Slight hint of decay still clings to him, presumably due to travelling inside undead whale. "Apologies for disturbance with my mode of transport. Courtesy of lady Mellkabbar."
As Ahmed, who's apparently made it back aboard Tub, gives his orders to Alexial, Licios waves hand dismissively: "Later."
Licios motions for nearby sailor "Let lady Hall know I've returned and that she can send the bird on its way now. Sooner it's out of the ship probably better for everyone's peace of mind." Then he turns to regard Alexial "First mate Alexial, I want full report on everything that's happened aboard my ship during my absence. Spare no details." He then motions her to follow as he steps further away from main crew to hear her report undisturbed.

Kathy receives the message. Happy to be rid of the bird, she sends the blasted thing on it's way. Rushing to the deck her eyes searching for Licios. Her face and eyes light up when she see's him. Barely able to contain her excitement, she bounces around waiting for him to finish his conversation.

Licios listens to Alexial's report with increasingly grim expression. When she finally finishes her report, observers hear quite audible muttering. "I risk my life and soul to ensure safe passage for this expedition and the moment I'm gone, you lot manage to do just about everything except sink both ships. Wonderful. I'm almost starting to think this expedition is more difficult to keep afloat than Black Jewel, and I had to watch my step or fall through deck aboard that one.
Hmm. You said poisoning was arranged by Westshore company? Interesting, they certainly seem to have their fingers in lot of trouble."
Despite his muttering, slight smile forms as Licios catches sight of Kathy. "Yes, it does seem like that, doesn't it?"
Raising his voice enough to carry to Kathy, and probably quite few observers, his tone clearly teasing. "Now now miss Hall, what did I do this time to have to wait like this for a proper greeting? Also, kindly stop bouncing around, with how excited you are I'm worried you'll go straight through the deck and sink us."

She squeals happily running to Licios. Skidding to a stop, she throws her arms around him. Bouncing up and down hugging him tightly. I've missed you. You was busy getting the updates of what happened while you was gone. I didn't want to interrupt something that important. Standing on her toes, to kiss him. I love you. Her arms remain wrapped around him, smiling up into his eyes.Have I told you lately that you talk to much?

The usually serious expression on Licios's face melts away at Kathy's excitement, smiling at her reaction. As Kathy tries to reach up to kiss him, Licios simply picks her up by waist and lifts her up, holding Kathy for several long moments before finally setting her down. "No, you haven't mentioned that lately. However, I'm afraid you'll have to endure my talking for few more moments."
Licios turns to notify Alexial and couple other nearby crewmembers, instructing them that given news he's just received, he'll need to address Tub's crew at once. As crew gathers on deck, Licios takes place on sterncastle, leaning on its railing with both hands, watching as crew gathers below.
"Now then. As all of you can probably see, I've returned from my absence aboard Black Jewel, something I'm told has caused concern among my crew." He begins, voice carrying easily across the ship, emphasizing 'my crew' as he speaks. "I assure you, there has been no need for concern. A deal was made with captain Mellkabbar of the Black Jewel in order to ensure safe passage for both our ships through these waters. As your captain it was my duty to fulfill the agreement, at risk of my life so my ship and crew would be safe. You have my word that none of this shall affect you." A slight grin forms on his face "Besides, think of the drinks we'll all earn with this story in any port. You are only crew known that can truthfully boast having sailed under captain who boarded dreaded Black Jewel and lived."
Giving the joke a moment to sink in and ease the situation, Licios's expression turns suddenly grim as he leans forward, cold eyes sweeping across faces of his crew. "However, I've also been informed of certain unease and dislike upon my profession and nationality of myself and few other officers aboard. I shall remind you that I'm captain of this ship and all of you voluntarily joined my crew. As long as we're at sea, this ship is my domain. I'm the judge, jury and executioner aboard this ship. Follow my orders and I guarantee you that I will not ask of you to take on actions you would consider morally questionable, and I shall do everything in my power to ensure all of you return safely to your homes and families once this journey is over."
Again, his gaze sweeps across gathered crew, expression somehow growing ever colder. "But should this concern grow further, should dislike cause any of you take action against me or mine... There shall be no mercy for those who would raise hand against this expedition. I sailed for years with Thayan navy and I assure you, means of discipline I've learned would make toughest among you weep in terror."
"As for recent poisonings, I will be taking personal interest in this. That was direct attack against MY crew, and I take such quite personally. The poisoner shall not avoid punishment and should any of you have concerns over this, notify either first mate Alexial or lady Hall, and I shall make time to hear what you have to say."
Licios finally turns away, leaving his words to sink in. "Alexial, see about setting that meeting with captain Blake that Ahmed suggested. Perhaps he can shed some light to how recent events were allowed to come to pass."
