Travellers passing through the eastern forests of Cormyr may chance to hear one of two songs (played on a set of pipes) drifting in the night air. The first is a happy, jaunty tune played to a quick, almost snappy rhythm. This song is only ever heard in early evening and is often accompanied by a cheerful-sounding series of melodic whistles and chirps. The second is a more sonorous tune, recognisable by Elves as a song of sorrow. This latter song is only heard in later hours and may be accompanied by a sad keening whistle.
Any true bard would recognise the player is not the most skilled of musicians as the tunes bear little artistry in their renditions. Such bards would easily deduce the strictly technical correctness of the playing comes solely from many hours of repeated playing.
Anybody who tries to approach the music's source would quickly observe it's coming from high in the trees branches, rather than from ground-level.
Further, unless the approaching individual has superior stealth, the music will cease abruptly and said seeker may hear the creak of branches as a weight shifts from one to another and another and so forth. They may also chance to hear a soft fluttering trailing in the same direction.
Stealthier searchers are likely to get closer and may catch a flash of silver gleaming in the dappled moonlight (assuming there is at least one moon out) before the figure again starts to flee. Any attempt to pursue the retreating apparition will be met with an arrow targeted at the searcher's feet
// If you feel your char would come across this anonymous musician and doesn't take the warning shot hint, feel free to PM me with his/her actions.
// DMs, please feel free to have NPCs react too. I'm just laying the groundwork for the return of my favourite char. :-)
