Lo! Xarete here. I poked around the boards a bit, but I didn't see a discussion or whatnot on this anywhere.. so, here it is. I played on a server before which gave XP for RP -- it was an automated script. If you were within, I think it was 10 feet, of someone for a certain period of time (10 minutes or so, methinks) -- then you'd get XP. It was either 250 or 50 XP, I can't quite recall... ...either way, I REALLY liked it; it removed the.. pressure to be out and about, hacking things up. To earn XP quickly, obviously you'd still have to go on adventures -- but not as often; casual, friendly RP was rewarded. I guess there are two points: 1) You should RP for the sake of RP. ... true dat; but at the same time, it's nice to get rewarded for it, and it's nice to not worry about running out so often.. hm. 2) Sense. Does it make sense to get stronger from sitting on your arse? Not in particular.. I suppose you might come across divine inspiration, or come to some sort of conclusion.. or something, but. There is that. Any thoughts?

XP is rewarded for RP... By DMs. Unfortunately there are only so many of us. And... Not to put the idea down, but do you think you could describe the script a bit better? Personally it sounds like a good idea except for the fact that all it would take is a couple of people sitting around in the same area, leaving their game on, and poof they get a bunch of XP. True, it'd stop the farming, but then nobody would go out and explore...

Though I do see how it can be abused... but like make it 10 exp, per half hour or something. And if a DM sees someone standing there for a long time and dont respond. *boot*
But personally, I just get distracted by the TV and go off and make a sandwich with NWN still running... so it'd hurt me a bit if my suggestion was taken seriously...
and would the exp script work if on an adventure? Like after half an hour in the crypt with your friends you gain 10 exp?
*shrug* And I doubt people would stop adventuring, I mean its boring to sit around isinhold all day, I mean ask Tori. ;D

ask Tori,haha... this is a neat idea...cause the RP XP you get these days is awesome when you get it, cause it's like "YAY! I got noticed!" but there is a LOT of RP that gets done all of the time that doesn't get noticed obviously. and though it is it's own reward, a few automated drops in the xp bucket when you are drinking in the Inn with your friends would be very cool. Heck...after nearly every adventure, I meet my group in the Inn and have drinks and some of the best times happen there. anyway, it's late and I'm rambling. and don't worry, I know one elf that would still do plenty of exploring

Voice of reason says:
Ain't gonna happen... ever.
We are geared toward the best of NWN which is the IMORPG. Intimate, Massive, Online, Role, Playing, Game.
It is a beautiful notion, but it is so very easily abused. I must say, never.
Cheers!

Role-playing should never be about "I got noticed"... in fact, I feel it is quite the opposite.
Now, maybe I am showing my arse, but I feel , and have always felt that RP is about the bond you build with another/other role-player/s.
Does anyone know how FRC got started?
I will tell you. I was role-playing on a server named Battledale. Awesome server/module... probably (still) one of the best servers ever. I used to play a dwarf named Gilmwar. Gilmwar was a bit of a dwarven hothead, but one day he met a stealthy man named Myler, and another bear of a broken man named Wallino, and yet another clerical man of great prowess.
We loved our RP together, and never, never asked for a thing from that server... but when we saw one another... We would share stories of triumph, defeat, laughter, humiliation, and the like. We role-played because we wanted to, every single time we met... no other reason, what-so-ever!
Those persons so mentioned became DM Justicar, DM Usurper, DM Richard, and the now gone DM Myler.
I really hate the idea of someone thinking they deserve XP rewards for playing on our server. They don't. The experience is it's own reward. If you disagree, fine by me... but let me say you then seek a very hollow experience.
Play for playing sake. Screw XP... what is that but a shiney rock, or lesser. If you play for XP, you are missing the point. Seriously.

Well, I'm no DM or scripting sort of person myself, but from what I understood... it granted XP for being -active- around an individual (or a group) for a certain period of time, which I think was 10 minutes. Sounds like it would be complicated to script, but... again, I know nothing about scripting!

I didn't really intend to come off as sounding like... I dunno, RP should be used as a tool to get XP or whatnot, or that the only reason RPing would be worthwhile was to get XP for it; that's not how I feel at all. For years, I ran (with a bunch of friends) an online, text-based RPG (a MUCK, if any of you are MU* savvy) -- there was no combat system or anything, it was just themed RP. So, I'm intimate with the pure pleasure and bliss that is RP: I think of it as writing this ever-morphing, amazing story (tragic, triumphant, dramatic, lazy, twisted, whatever it may be, or all of these at the same time) -- only, with other people. You never know where the story is going to go -- because other people are steering it as well. Ahem. Tangent! Just... I've roamed NWN for over a year-and-a-half, now, always searching for a server to settle down on. Before some issues arose.. the server with the XP-RP system installed was my absolute favorite, ever. I felt more... connected to the players, the characters, on that server than I have in any other NWN module; I dunno, maybe it was because they knew that levelling didn't require running around beating stuff up; we could go for a walk through the woods, we could sit by the swimming hole, we could just chill out in the city and talk... RP is its own reward; but XP is a big part of NWN. And getting XP is usual a much more ... straight-forward/lonely/less creative process: blow creatures up, hack creatures up. It was nice to have XP distributed some other way. I think it did pave the way for more RP, because less people felt pressured to run off. Anyway... I think I lost sight of what I was saying at some point, but it pretty much boiled down to: not trying to cheapen RP, or put a price on it. <edit> Lala. Sorry if I sounded whiny. I do that now and then, and I'll use being a girl as an excuse. In any case... yup, everyone definitely brought up really good points as to how a RP-XP system could and would be sucky. I just remembered my experience from the other server being so lovely, and I guess I gave partial credit to that system, whereas it was mostly thanks to the DMs and players. And such~

If you disagree, fine by me... but let me say you then seek a very hollow experience. I really hope that I didn't give off that impression... I'll admit to having enjoyed the system, but this thread wasn't something I started as a suggestion for the server, but just a discussion. So I appreciate everyone's input and apologize I was misunderstood as being the XP-grubbing sort. Or if I wasn't and I'm just being overly nervous about you guys not liking me or something.

i loathe the idea of some mindless script giving out XP to anyone just sitting around talking.
i tried one such server before i settled on FRC. we ended up sitting around a cmapfire talking purely OOC: (( yeah and then my char broke down... ))
we still got xp... my only comment on that script is: LAME...
i like to RP and i'd never have set foot on an RP server if i didn't find RP rewarding in itself. it's only recently that the DM pressence has been sufficiant to do regular XP hand-outs for RP, and i still get surprised everytime it happens. i like RPing regardless of XP or no XP.

Please don't get me wrong Anaxrete. I love the fact that you are sharing your ideas and have heard that you are a wonderful role-player. I just think that we have enough DM's running around now to pass out RP XP, and they do. Sometimes we don't give it out a little at a time, but rather save up for a larger reward.
We definitely recognize RP on the server as that is also how we pick our DM candidates as well. And we usually give XP rewards when we see fine RP happening.
I really do feel that having a script to do it would be kind of lame and impersonal as well.
Anyway, please keep sharing your thoughts because that's what helps us make FRC a better experience for everyone.
Cheers!

Yeah~ every server is different, and what works for one may likely not work for another; the DM staff here is considerably more active and together than on the aforementioned server; so maybe that system would make-up for DM inactivity, marginally (very, very marginally, at that), but you're right (durr) in that it's not right for FRC.

i still get surprised everytime it happens. i like RPing regardless of XP or no XP. Me too ;D After I get one I am always thinking what did I do. The ones that really surprise me are when I am just trying to catch up on the rumors around the campfire, and I get an XP reward. I always make sure to thank the DM's whenever I get XP for RP. Don't know if that is annoying or not, but I'll keep doing until I am told to stop

It's fine to thank DM's whenever you like. Rewarding a player with an XP reward is one of the ways we thank them for taking a positive active role in the community.
It is nice to know they are appreciated.
Cheers!

Mrena and Kyros were in this heated debate about whether or not he was a Glorious Knight of Luksen (Luskan?), trained by Torm himself (riiiight), when suddenly a townsperson snickered... and then Mano started poking fun at Kyros too. It was hilarious.

lol I have said coutless times... "Ohh Roleplay Experience!"...
"*Laugh* Now what did I do to deserve this?"
And then I Promptly say "ty for the exp ^_^." in the DM channel.
And I think the reason people get exp for RP at all is why it was so attractive that we get exp for the great RP we have when the DM's arent watching. Like:
Example:"Hey I got exp for arguiing around a campfire? Darn, they should have seen that Meeting in the forest with the banites where we debate about the core of good and evil!"
almost anyone who lives in america, takes things for granted when it becomes commonly received. So it was just the next step in thinking, "hey, we get exp for RPing some of the time... why not get exp all the time for RPing?"
It was a wild idea.
*shrug*

It's always funny when I see possible mention of one server whose forum I lurk on another server whose forum I lurk. I lurk one that has that RP XP script but I've never actually played that server to comment, I just know the module creators/operators. That one has had some turmoil recently so it's probably the same one.
Just to throw in my two cents, I'm not a fan of the RP XP script myself because it's exactly like was mentioned by someone else earlier: You still get your "reward" whether you're IC or OOC. I think the primary reason the server I'm familiar with used that script was because of DM inactivity during non-US playing hours and they were trying to give the other regions a bit of a nudge so they could get rewards from RP.
Been awhile since I logged into FRC. Been playing some (very little) elsewhere but I thought there was some technical reason I hadn't logged on FRC. I tried to log-in just now and it works fine. Perhaps I'll drop by sometimes.

Anaxarete, it was a good idea. It actually was discussed a long time ago when the xp system was changed. But as has been pointed out, it could be used for all the wrong reasons. Now don't get discouraged with ideas. Keep them coming. It has been a long time since new blood has decided to speak up against the tyranny that is the dms ! J/K guys. But keep those ideas coming. Anyways, I will relate a story about an experience I just had recently. I was explaining to Jargo and Cor and Rav just recently that I hadn't seen many dm's in a while (even with the installation of the new dms). They told me, they saw them near daily. Funny thing was, about an hour later, we were playing with a dm. The next day I saw a dm as well. So dont get discouraged! The dms are out there, and they will notice. I feel the same way about about RPing, it is like telling a story that keeps on growing. And it is really nice when a dm drops a little something your way because then it feels like someone is following along with your story. Right now, there are only a few dms (the rest are busy building), so dont let it get you down if you dont see one for a while. BTW, Welcome to FRC. Good to see a new face! And noob opinions matter the most because it shows what people's first impressions are of the server.

*sighs* Our first adventure ... That was the time that Vind, thrulia, Hroth, and Jacob took down a lich. It was hilarious to have 3 level 1s and 1 level 16 fighting a lich. That was back when even Vind didn't trust hroth.
Good times ...
