In a sealed envelope containing a pearl and addressed to the Lady Vallesse
Lady Vallesse: Regarding the nature of your pearl
Long have I considered the question that you have posed. Upon my hand I set your pearl and beheld it's beauty, it's flaws, and considered it's shape and weight.
This is my conclusion; that which delights me is it's tangibility. Indeed, it's very presence, it's touch against my skin, though not merely a pearl, but the impossible love which it represents, soothed my heart, and yet increased my desire, for as long as I grasped it.
Therein also lies my loathing for this object; for as tangible it is now, it's true nature is transitory. As I held it, it reminded me that flesh, then wood, then stone, the lives of elves, and finally the very stars themselves shall into oblivion pass.
So though my sorrow be sore, my duty I cannot ignore.
When the steel of my armor has rusted away and mingled with the dust of my bones, let those who remember me say this; "He tarried not for his own, but to those who would bring happiness, he brought joy, and to those who would take peace away, he took away their lives. In this he did the dictates of duty and served the will of the righteous gods."
Please do not seek my soul any longer.
