Well the Listen and Spot skills come down to the same thing. They reveal hidden enemies based on their Move Silently and Hide Skills. I'm figuring if you max out spot or listen you don't have to worry about the other one. What are peoples opinions of these skills. I also read somewhere that spot reveals the map in larger portions and you can see enemies from further away. Are there any hidden benifits for listen?

As far as i know, those added benefits you mentioned are not true. I will say that spot, beyond revealing hidden characters, also has the added benefit of noticing a pick pocket. However, for rp circumstances, i could think of a lot more uses for listen. Eavesdropping mostly Oh and most often characters will have a higher hide because of spells like camoflage and mass camo. Otherwise the majority of the items on the server are balanced.

As far as having a character with high spot and listen i've placed as many points into spot as i have into listen. It has helped to have both, spot and search i've noticed are key in dm quests. You never know when you have to track something or pick something out of the sorrounding area. As far as listen, quad's touched most of it there so i wont add more.

Spot opposes Hide and Listen opposes Move Silently. Each has one secondary benefit engine-wise of which I'm aware:
Spot reveals pickpocket attempts. It does not prevent pickpocketing, but it does let you see that the person is pickpocketing you. I believe this is Spot vs. Pickpocket.
Listen still opposes Move Silently on invisible characters whereas no Spot check is made since there's nothing to see.
Both have RP uses as well, such as noticing a clue or hearing a hidden mechanism working.

Also bear in mind that DM's will sometimes call for dice rolls that might use any of these abilities. If you fail your spot, you might miss extra treasure, for example. If you fail your listen, you might be horribly ambushed, for example... Given this, any skill can become important, or more important, from time-to-time.

that and from a RP stand point what are you going to have... an elf with great eyes but crappy ears? or the other way around?
An elven ranger should be able to hear and see exceptionally well. so rather than base what you are going to stack your skill points into for "being a better build" reasons, try to think of it from a RP standpoint.

It was more that if they did the same thing why take them. I decided I'll invest in both of them.
