So in PnP you wouldnt mind if someone took the PrC Archmage just to get 1 High Arcana feat? The point of this discussion was to monitor yourself in how you took levels of Prestige Classes. I'm not saying that you cant go back to another class once you start taking prestige classes, I was saying that it seems odd to me if you take just enough levels of the class to get the added benefits of the prestige class. In fact, I would be very happy if someone took 10 levels of weapon master, as there is little to gain beyond the 7th level. And seeing a RDD with 11 levels would make me happy as well. for the record, the red dragon disciple is based on an actual race available in dnd. at the tenth level you become a fully fletched half-dragon with traits, not lower, not higher, but identical to those of a real half-dragon. taking more than 10 levels of RDD then does what to you precisely? makes you more half-dragon than a half-dragon? no on the contrary i think stopping at level 10 RDD is the only way to do it right. as for taking the last tree levels in weapon master... that would only weaken your char and you gain nothing worth mention as far as roleplaying goes. besides, i don't think of prestige classes as professions. a char with levels in weapon master is not a weapon master. he's a warrior with a special bond to his weapon. that entails both of his classes, not just the weapon master part. bottom line: i believe you should roleplay not your every choice in classes, but rather the result of combining them.
