I don't know how you guys feel about this idea or whatnot but I was thinking about the lag this weekend, and talking to some fellow players, when I had an idea. Why not take the high load area's of the server (which i would believe to be Isinhold and redmist area?) and put them on there own server machine, then run the rest of the server (were it seems most players don't venture) on it's own server. Apparently it is possible to alter transitions so that they lead you to another box with the next area on it. This way, each server would have much less of a work load. And if bandwidth is not an issue on FRC, then I don't believe this would cause lag on the line itself.
It was mentioned that there is a magic number of areas were lag in ineveitable (sp?) and that you cannot reach 40 players without issues because of the way the game was programmed. If we had two servers then this wouldn't be a problem. I hear there are many servers that are actually run off several machines already. Personally, I've barely touched the toolset, and don't understand how to build a module for NWN so i'm not sure how long and labor intensive this may be but I thought it was worth a suggestion.
Now as for cost..this is were the community comes in. I was thinking that maybe the players can pitch in and help pay for another machine, because Justi has already put so much of his own into this project, it would be nice to lighten the blow if the idea is acceptable, and will actually work then this would broaden our horizons, not only by reducing lag, but by supporting more people online at once, and leaving more room for expansion (even thought i've seen 1/10th of 1% of everything there is to see on FRC haha). We get to play this for no monthly fee so personally I say pitching in a few dollars shouldn't be a problem IMO. I'll end by saying that I for one would glady lend a helping hand, as will a few of my friends that play regularily...or as regularily as they can .
Thanks for your time
