Zelazadda reviews the new sign within Suzail. "Oh? Interesting. A bit beneath me, but I'm sure some newer and brave hero might participate!"

Zelazadda curiously reviews the sign once more in passing.
"Huh, still a thing? Wonder when some heroes will resolve this!"

*a letter is written and sent to Suzail in care of the Minister of Animal Control* Dear Minister Jespen,
Greetings to you. Me name be Mynian Copperhand and me be the Minister of the City Interior of Valkur's Roar.
On a recent inspection into the sewers there were found to be a copious amount of rats. Granted, rats be a normal thing within our waterways. However, this were far more than normal.
During me trips to your city me saw you had signs put up asking for assistance in exterminating the infestation. Me were wondering if the exterminators that have assisted have come across anything to clue in as to why this influx has been happening.
Rats bring disease and tend to go for food stores, so me hopes you can understand me concern.
Me hopes to hear from you soon.

** A letter is delivered to the Offices of Minister of the City Interior and written in a flowing script** Dear Minister Mynian Copperhand, Greetings from the grand capital of Suzail to Valkur’s Roar. I hope this missive finds you well and the city most prosperous. Indeed, we have had the misfortune of an infestation of vermin of late. Quite odd to say the least, it started out slowly, barely noticeable, but it seems their presence has been climbing. The silver lining as they say, is that our homeless situation has seemed to dwindle. One must assume that the vagrants do not like sharing space with other like vermin and have moved on. I have employed various exterminators to varying degree of success. It seems for every rat they kill, their ilk just seem to breed more….. not to mention the odd occurrences. Some of the exterminators have had, unfortunate accidents and are no longer with us… or fled in the night never to be heard from or seen again. However, do not hold it against those that fled,,, they had the decency not to show their faces and collect their coin. You may wish to speak to those in Greatgaunt. Word has reached my own ears that some travesty or another was averted there and if what is said is true… it seems rats were involved and if the tongue waggling be true.. perhaps even worse. If at all possible, it is best to put the vermin down as soon as possible by any means possible. They can carry the worse of disease, ruin whole stores of food and merchandise by their waste and in general a total nuisance. I wish you the best of luck and Happy Hunting. *a letter is sent in return* Minister Jespen,
Thank you for the timely response.
The latest me understands from Greatgaunt be that the ground shook greatly and then rats and very large dire sized spiders flooded the town. The infestation were dealt with, but as far as me knows no one inspected exactly where they came from.
As me be much closer to the Gaunt and have some associates within the adventuring populous me will continue to inquire of the situation and help send them in your direction for further instruction. Hopefully between our two Ministries we can get this issue resolved before our respective Lords need to be informed that Something Must Be Done.
Me will write again if more information becomes apparent.

*another letter is sent* Dear Minister Jespen,
Greetings again from Valkur's Roar.
Me were able to get in touch with a few in the adventuring populous out here in the Western Reaches. While there seems to be nay exact reason that can be pointed out as to why these infestations be happening there do some some facts.
- It seems to nay be centered on any one spot or city.
- The rats and now dire rats seem to be increasing in size and number.
- While the numbers be copious, they nay be infinite.
Having groups go to the areas they be found in and having them culled out do seem to help. Me would highly suggest to perhaps offer more incentive so that more groups delve to at least rid your sewer ways of the vermin. Me will be doing the same here and having some of the Reservists clear out these rats on occasion as well.
There be a half dozen unfounded rumors as to why this continues to happen from a supposed "Rat King" who be intent on taking over Cormyr, to large Purple Wyrms roaming about the Underdark pushing them to the surface, to the usual implication that it must be Drow (because it always be Drow, right?)
So far rumor be all they be. Me will continue to keep me ear to the ground (or under ground in this case) and let you know if more becomes apparent.
Until then, just continue to be vigilant.

My Dearest Mynian Copperhand, I hope my missive finds you well and in good health. Thank you for alerting me to the status of the vermin in Valkur’s Roar. I hate to admit, and please keep this most private and in-between just us but, unknown to most of the citizens… there has been an increase in vermin running amok and there has been several unfortunate deaths. Luckily, they have been of the human waste and not our more respectable citizens. However, fortune has smiled upon us and this as seemed to drive more of the beggars and homeless from our fair Capital. I have hired different sorts to seek out and find where these rats have been entering the city. I have had varying degrees of success with this. However, I have seen more abundance with rat-corpses by the adventuring types I hire… the strange thing is most do not seem to come to collect their reward and the few that have, do not return to their duty the next day for more good coin… and I do pride myself on paying well. I have found that you can never truly count on those silly adventure types, here one day and gone the next… always being swayed by whats around the bend I suppose. In any regard, to no surprise it seems the rats have been coming from the sewers and old decrepit abandoned buildings. Those I have hired have made mention that they have found many of the sewer grates open or locks busted. Which is hardly surprising, with a city as old and the size of Suzail to find such, however I have received more than one report of finding rat-hair stuck to the grates. However, what is surprising, from all of my years of Animal Control, I have only seen rats climb through much smaller holes than one would think possible… NOT break locks. It must have been from vandals or those disgusting homeless and beggars encroaching. I would not put much faith in these rumors you speak of. You know how gullible the commoners are and they cannot understand the goings on of a city such as we do. I can assure you there are no vile Drow lurking here, nor some Rat-King able to coordinate those mindless beast and direct them, much less enormous Purple-Worms driving them into the streets. Thank you for the jest, I needed a good laugh. Please keep the lines of communications open between us, I find it helpful and most entertaining… and if you ever happen to be in the Capital, please drop by…. Perhaps there could be additional entertainments….. Minister Jespen ***Seal of the Minister of Animal Control*** ShadowCatJen

*a letter makes it way to Suzail and the office of the Minister of Animal Control* Dear Minister Jespen,
Apologizes for the long silence, but things became increasingly busy these last few months. Preparation for Shieldmeet being a large part of it.
Me wanted to check in with you and see how your rat situation be fairing. Have they increased? Decreased? Do people still go missing?
Valkur's Roar, unfortunately, has seen a drastic increase and, me be afraid to say, a contingency of wererats leading them.
Me would highly recommend that you escalate the matter up to the local Suzail city guard or even hire mercenaries if you have seen an increase in size and number of rats. Me would also recommend you ask any and either to inspect your sewers thoroughly to see if they have dug even below the usual sewer pathways.
Me appreciates any information you have.

** A letter is delivered to the Offices of Minister of the City Interior and written in a flowing script** My Dearest Mynian Copperhand, I had hoped to hear from you again. It has been too long since our last exchange. Shieldmeet you say? I hope the contest went well and the fair city of Valkur’s Roar was represented? I have heard tale of all the festivities and always wished to attend. Unfortunately, with my prominence within the city and all of my duties, I have not been able to break away. However, if I were to get an official invitation for a visit I could possibly find cause to do so… How distressing that you have seen an increase in your rat population. Here in Suzail, the occurrence has been steady and my hope on the decline. Or it will be shortly, I was contacted and plan to have a meeting with a Lady in the next ten-day who says that she has a solution to get rid of the problem once and for all. I hope this is so and it does not cost my budget too much, but all would be worth it to get rid of such disgusting vermin. It is bad enough that the two such as us must deal with the human kind, let alone the hairy four-legged ones. Please excuse my jest, I know it is a necessary evil dealing with such in our station. If you would like, once my meeting is concluded I could send her your way? Wererats you say? Now surely you are the one jesting? At least I hope so, they have quite the fierce reputation and are said to be very lethal and destructive. I myself have never had to deal with them, however please keep this to yourself, my predecessor evidently did a number of years ago. I could ask him, but I fear as normal he would be very tight lipped. You see, unfortunately he passed away this past year and as they say has gone onto peaceful and better lands… which I highly doubt, the cheap bastard. In any regard, when he retired some time back and I took over the position, he described in confidence an encounter with a gang of such nasty creatures. He did not go into detail, but insinuated after hiding a great deal of destruction and deaths he was able to purchase their departure and ran the gang off. He must have done a fair job of it as they have never been heard from since. I hope such is not true, but if you find yourself in such dire straits, I highly recommend that you dip into the city coffers, pay and run them off. If I can be of further help, please do not hesitate to ask. Perhaps we could even meet to discuss such events… or create others. Yours, Minister Jespen

Coming back to Valkur's Roar after a short trip to Cloudstone, Mynian settles back down to her stacks of parchment work. Stuck in between a missive regarding possible trade with Starmantle and a letter from an owner of one of the local warehouses, she finds Minister Jespen's letter.
As she reads it, slowly but surely her eyebrows furrow more and more. By the end, she doesn't hold back her look of contempt and disgust.
"Yours?" she utters, then louder and not caring if the nearby guards heard it. "Yours!?"
Ignoring the odd looks, she shook the parchment with both hands and spoke to it, "First off, stop flirtin' with me 'n secondly tha only thin' prominent be tha fertilizer commmin' out o' yeh gob! Yeh be a over-glorified gardener 'n stray dog catcher so step down off tha' pedestal yeh got yehself on, yeh unctuous lil' sh*te."
After a huff and a side eye to one of the guards who was eyeing her in return, she'd utter again, "Least that's whot me would like to put in me reply ... but we'll go with this instead."
On a fresh bit of parchment she writes ....
Minister Jespen,
As much as me would like to indulge you in frivolous matters, there be too much to be done and me can not send invitation at this time.
Once you do have your meet with this Lady, please send me forth what her name be and if it would be possible to meet her.
The sooner we can deal with this issue, the sooner we can move on to less duty bound events, aye?
In Luck and Death,
MC

My Dearest Minister Copperhand or should I call you Mynian, It truly is as you say, such stations as ours, Duty always comes first…. However, as you also said…sooner the issues are dealt with… less duty bound we shall find ourselves. I look forward to being less duty bound. It will be as you ask, of course once my business is concluded I will send her your way. But, perhaps you have met, she recognized your name when mentioned and commented on your high noble birth and beauty. I do so, hope in the truth of all these things I have heard tale of you, even more so after the Lady Sterling’s description. I wait on bated breath to meet you in person and then onto our frivolous adventure. But, please now that we are so acquainted, please call me Rejinald or Rejji if you like, after all that is what my close friends call me. We can be dispense with the Minister don’t you think? Mynian tapped a finger on the table as she read over the letter, her eyes narrowing at the name "Lady Sterling". "'oo tha 'ell's be yeh 'n whot yeh tryin' ta pull?" Another set of tap, tap, tap on the table and she murmurs the name "Sterling" over and over until her eyes shift over to the silver dagger, still resting on the table nearby. ".... sterling silver?" then with a shake of her head, "Nay .. tha' would be too simple 'n contrived.... but ..." Breaking out a bit of parchment she writes a few small letters that get sent in various directions. But to Minister Rejinald Jespen she sends nothing. Half-way through her parchment work she suddenly starts glancing up and then behind her, certain she saw some shadow shift out of the corner of her eye. With a grunt she'd go back to her work only to look around the hall as if she'd heard something. This trend seems to last all through her work hours. Every so often shaking her head and muttering, "Jus' tha stress gettin' ta me. Tha's all..." AnvilX Goldilocks
