I will be going the UK for two weeks towards the end of the month for work with a weekend stay. It will be my first trip to the UK and I will be in the Newcastle area and am looking for things to see or do during the weekend. If there are any UK players familiar with the area, let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks

Hi Helgrin
I suppose it depends on what kind of things you want to see - city stuff, countryside, culture. history or hiking.
Newcastle itself is quite a lively city with good nightlife, and quite interesting heritage from its industrial past (if you're into that kind of thing).
Newcastle is very close to the county of Northumberland a beautiful and often overlooked part of England, with some interesting sites. There are really nice coastal walks on the Northumberland coast and medieval castles such as Alnwick and Bamburgh Castle. I'd really recommend visiting the small island of Lindisfarne with a medieval priory and was a gleaming jewel in the culture of early medieval Europe let alone England. It was home to the chronicler of early Anglo-Saxon England the Venerable Bede and well worth a visit if you can get there.
The medieval city of Durham is pretty close by, it is very beautiful and has a large medieval university too.
The City of York is also not too far away. I used to live there and loved it. It has the most complete surrounding medieval wall left in England which you can walk around. Full of sights and things to do as a tourist and loads of great pubs as well. York Minster well worth a visit - particularly the spire that has a great view over York.
Also fairly close to Newcastle is the eastern part of Hadrian's wall - the wall that cuts across Northern England that the Roman Emperor Hadrian had erected to mark the limit of the Empire and to keep out the tribes north. I think one of the bigger archaeological sites on the wall in Northumberland is Vindolanda (at least I remember going on a school field trip there once).
As you can probably tell I have a bit of a History bias but if there's any other aspect you're interested in just ask and I'll see if I know anything.

Hope you had a great trip. I miss home tremendously, but as a filthy southerner I know better than to travel north of the Watford Gap. Jokes aside, I spent a couple of weeks at Albermarle Barracks in Ouston near Newcastle in the late nineties, training 39 Regt RA in tactics for their NI tour, and had a really good time. The scenery is lovely and the ladies weren't too dissuaded by a young precocious Essex lad. I wonder if "The Boat" still exists as a night club / hangout. The food wasn't nearly as bad as I was lead to believe and Hadrian's Wall was indeed amazing.

I met some Newcastle girls in Greece. Not sure how they are in their gloomy natural habitat but they're a wild bunch when out in the sun.
