MunroeAdamantine is usually portrayed as a black metal. If you're just looking to make a dark-looking shield, adamantine would be the metal to use. I don't have much experience with the crafting system on FRC. Is obsidian one of our crafting objects?

It is not and I know for a fact because I'm the person who made the entire crafting system or rather remade the entire crafting system. I'm trying to collect RP information is all. So let me refine my question, would obsidian make in character roleplay sense for being a really exorbitant fancy Shield material?

Official sources and legit FR lore aside, I would expect a shield made entirely of obsidian to have increased vulnerability against bludgeoning damage, and maybe even to the two other mundane damage types as well. Obsidian is naturally occurring volcanic glass, not a metallic alloy.
I think this material is probably better suited for making very sharp slashing and piercing weapons, but such weapons are very rare in FRC to begin with.

I am not aware of formal stats for Obsidian as a D&D 3.x material. However, obsidian is statted as a "primative material" for Pathfinder. In Pathfinder, the obsidian material reads as follows: As much as I LOVE Pathfinder, that description of obsidian is not official to D&D 3.x. It is, however, a detail from (very) "similar" game mechanics designed to reflect the nature of obsidian. Based on that, I'd say obsidian is probably not a good choice for use in shields, except as a decorative element. Speaking of black metals, I mentioned adamantine before, but completely left out wrought iron. (Not that iron is a good choice, it's just that wrought iron is another black metal.)

I'm pretty much set on the base material metal being mithral. I'm not really concerned about that I'm just trying to find something really really fancy that would be extremely pricey normally like for crafting purposes to add to the shield that would be black in color. Or be very dark in color. If obsidian would not work what would be the suggestion instead for a quality Shield material that would be good for collecting in game. Again I'm just looking for something that's really really fancy and dark in color to use in addition to mithral as a base material. My goal is materials for a shield that is very lightweight and very dark or black in color so my thinking is mithral for base metal and then some other material to accent and color the metal as part of the crafting process. So I would like suggestions for that please and thank you.

My first thought, if you're doing mithral as the actual shield material, and that's what you're RPing as the type of shield it is, is to consider something like dark wood and adamantine for accents. If it's purely cosmetic, you could even use gems like jet or black onyx. (Though black onyx is often associated with necromancy.)

Roger roger, sounds more or less like relatively any dark/black gem will suffice then...RP implications of specific gems not withstanding. Giving them just wanting to use it for cosmetic coloring like you said, I'm still curious if there's some way I could like make the actual Shield itself as part of the forging process be metal and black in color but I feel like at this point that's an abandoned notion and it's better to just go with a cosmetic covering. As far as I know adamantine makes blue metal?

As far as I know adamantine makes blue metal? Adamantine is usually shown as black, and has been on FRC too, and RPed as such. That should still be the case unless the crafting system has been changed.

It may be that my Hue recognization or color settings are off or something I'll double-check that. Would it be possible then to like combine the lightweight aspect of mithral with the colored aspect of adamantine? Make essentially an adamantium colored alloy with the weight of mithral? I'm less concerned about the howl of that currently although if you want to include that that would be phenomenal or an idea to postulate about that. More so just wondering if that is in the realm of possibility in regards to role-play somehow.

Mithral is a white metal, so it would be particularly good for clear colored finishes. (As for whether you can actually make the shield black visually, that would defend on what's available within the shield appearance crafting.) Making an alloy of adamantine and mithral, however, would not produce the beneficial properties of both. A shield or armor should be made primarily of one standard material. Other materials are acceptable as accents but the material of the shield itself needs to be a standard material to receive the benefits of being that material.

Ok, that makes sense. I'll go with mithral base, conjure RP and material reason for the dark colour. I think overall I've got the info I need. Thanks very much.
