Hi there.
Some time ago I have bought Tabletop Simulator from Berserker Games (available on Steam) just to play board games online (as well as to test out board games before buying them IRL :-)).
TTS does have a great RPG flavor to it.
Does anyone has this and plays?
Utran.

But does it let you throw a die across the room when it blows a critical saving throw?

It sure does.
Then the die respawns in middle of the table. There's also a button to flip the table in rage. (you can disable it, and there's an undo button). I've played some small things, like a round of Advanced Heroquest but not for a while. I have the hard-copy of the games I've played. Probably in the minority here, but I'm not a big fan of thiefing stuff and most content on Tabletop Sim, last I checked, is.

There's actually a lot of board and card games that has sold more copies of their games due to their popularity on Tabletop Simulator(Secret Hitler for example).
I've also bought physical board games after having tried them on Tabletop Simulator, and find it an excellent platform for trying out new board games and playing with friends far away. You're not stealing from anyone, but yes, it's a grey area copyright-wise.

I figure you still need the rules for those... like way back when I used to occasionally play AD&D and Star Wars d20 on AOL chat. I'll have to take a look at it.

The point is that TTS is just an engine for one to use to visualize. There is no build-in mechanics, so it is still "pen and paper" just the pen is a mouse and paper is the screen. You still need to know which die for what just like in pnp. It has a lot of basic components + a truck load of content on the steam workshop.
I have once tried out the module Lost Mines of Phandelver. On the steam workshop there are all locations with maps included so you can just use that.
Something that is not mentioned in this video is that you can use ANY image as the table background. Literally any.
This video shows more:
Same for me. Thanks to TTS I have bought about 20 board games because I knew what I was buying and how fun they are.

If you want a digital platform for pen and paper roleplaying I'd recommend Roll20 over Tabletop Simulator. It has a lot of great tools for pnp play. Macros, maps, tiles etc. It's a lot better for the DM as well.

I've never used Tabletop Simulator but my brother uses it to playtest the deck-building card game he's been developing for about a year.
He has also tested in local game stores but sometimes when he changes the rules his deck becomes obsolete. He's had two test versions of the deck printed so far (different from each other) but does most of his testing in Tabletop Simulator as he can change the rules and card quantities in the deck without getting a new deck printed.
Anyway, my only exposure to Tabletop Simulator is hearing him talk about it.
