Computer decided it has breathed it's last fatal sigh. I won't be back until I can afford to buy a computer or get the old one fixed. Going to miss everybody and am open to forum rp with those who desire to do so.

I remembered I had fun with NWN and NWN1 online - - so I booted up my old win95 machine - which still had a copy - sadly the ethernet cable socket on it is broken. So I transferred the files to my winXP machine via USB key. It runs better on the XP machine.(if your wondering why I kept such old machines - some games only run on the old machines). I eventually also transferred it to my Win7 machine - which runs even better. (Animayhem suggested I run it undercompatibility for winXP).
The Xp machine has real issues with modern browsers - taking minutes to load a page which my win7 machine loads in seconds. My win7 machine also runs the more modern games - like Dark Souls etc that I occassionaly buy. Although I had upgraded the video card. (In my opinion the windows systems run better in the next machine up - - ie win98 runs better fast and boots fastest in the hardware that the winxp machine comes in - every time the hardware gets better - they bring in am more resource intensive win system which makes it run like I hog. - - - - which I why I refuse not install win10 - - - from all the reports I have heard from my friends - it runs slow on the hardware that was running win7 - - so I don't intend changing to win10 - until I can afford a better machine.)
Anyway the point of this story - I frequently see advertising for older model machines at vastly reduced prices - and even less for second hand reconditioned machines. I paid $2000 for my win7 machine when it was new - many years ago - and I see them advertised for 200-400 (several years ago). (not to mention picking stuff up for free(ish) from office cleanouts) I would recommend something like that- as the Xp hardware just doesn't do internet fast enough. the win7 hardware is fine and cheap. I would like to be able to afford a faster machine - but the only reason to do so would be to play a resource intensive graphics game - win7 is fine for internet etc and games and is way cheaper than a modern machine.
Just saying you might want to investigate the possibility of an older model machine - so you can have internet and games - while a better machine awaits (PS don't get a win8 system - It works - but I have to tell it to look like a win7 system - - - win7 cleverly updates on shutdown - win8 - may hang for half an hour as it choses to do updates at start up - - - alla the theory its every second win system which is any good)

I have the use of my daughter's win 7 computer when she isn't using it. The problem is her CD keys doesn't match mine so even with the use of a machine temporary I can't play. I don't relish making lvl 21 characters over from scratch. FYI I don't have any way to recover my CD keys. So this where I stand right now.

You could do this:
1) Create a new login 2) Ask Extropy to move your characters into the folder of your new login.

Or, like with any other changed CD key issue, ask a DM to help clear the stored hash and keep your current account(s). If you recover your old keys you'd have to repeat the process, but it's potentially less work.

I am aware your finances may be tight but if you have some sort of computer store like staples or best buy, they can remove the hard drive from the computer and download all the data to an external drive. Something to consider for future

Yes that is something to consider in the future. I am trying to get any data I can saved off the old computer. It's going to take a while though to even get the funds to have that done. When I say I live 40 miles from no where plum out in the sticks I am not joking. We can't pick up a radio channel or TV channel here. The closest place to me that can do this is 76 miles from me and I have no transportation there.
I've sent a message to DM Extropy about restoring my account in any way possible. I am just waiting for something back. If anyone knows how to reach him or another DM can help that would be great. I am under the understanding that Extropy is the only one who can help with this. Until I hear something back or can find a way to get my beast functioning again I'm on hold.
And to make matters worse I'm sharing a computer that belongs to 15 year old. Awesome kid but every time she hears her chat programs ding guess who gets booted off the computer so she can answer her friends. *Waves*

Simple solution: mute the chat programs.
Also yes it's simplicity to transfer your accounts from one CDkey to another, just need to establish identity and that seems easy as well

Just about any full DM can help you unlink your CD keys and login with a new set. Shoot an active one a PM.
As for recovering data, if these are both windows PCs you can literally unhook the HDD from the old one and socket it into the current as a secondary drive and directly copy any data over. Just make sure you attach all the necessary cables. If the drive is relatively new, it should be one power and one SATA cable. Power comes from the PSU and leads into the HDD, and the SATA (typically a red ribbon cable) hooks one end into the motherboard and one end into the drive. When you boot, if the drives are set up to be read in the proper order, it should show up under the 'my computer' option as a new drive letter.
Edit: If it's the drive that is completely screwed, you might be out of luck on recovery- the process often costs several hundred dollars. Better to try it at home first.

you'll want different CD keys than your daughter. Grr! Not at home - but among the files in the NWn directory is NWNcdkey or somethinlike that - open it with note pad or a simple txt editor. Make copy of original nwnCDkey - label it as nwncdkey.org can then edit if for new cd key - - and can alternate between the two by changing the suffic. Also requires you to use a different login in name - than your daughters - - not complex but fiddly - and easy to get wrong - no biggy -can just do it right the second time - - - - but it just might be easier to use you daughter's keys - - having written all this down. I might update when I get home.
All of this theoretical in any case.

I might update when I get home. All of this theoretical in any case. How about we don't suggest changing file extensions without knowing what those extensions do? If you read through the thread, not having the original CD keys (by not having access to that computer) prevents one from having two CD keys to use in the first place. The reason one cannot log in with separate CD keys on the same account is that the key hash (not the keys, a numerical representation of the keys) is associated with that given account, since the Gamespy authorization was shut down several years ago. Because of this, you can have any number of usernames attached to a given key, but only one key per username. If one has access to both keys, I believe there's a tool in the welcome room that allows a player to do it themselves. Without this access, a DM is required to unlink a key. Finally, if you ever have a particular file that needs to be backed up in the same folder location, change the filename instead of the file extension. It prevents confusion and is safer than picking some randomly-listed file extension that may affect something else. 'nwnckey.ini' should become 'backupnwncdkey.ini'

I wanted to quickly mention - - the CD keys are printed on the cover of the books that came with the game - the manual. You would have entered them into the game at setup. If you still have the manual you still have the keys. If you got the game via gog/steam - i believe you still have the keys.
(i bought gold edition NWN then platinum edition - and currently use gold keys plus the SOU key from platinum ed. - and have made the mistake before of using all platinum keys on reinstalling not being linked to my login in name)

The book was lost several years ago. If I had the book I could re-use my keys on my daughter's computer.
