DM Q and A - Gorgon petrification

I'm just curious a new feature of a certain area is the inclusion of gorgons, this does not allow you to respawn if it happens to you solo. nor is it temporary.

I'd recommend one or another.

Thank you for raising this concern.

Petrification is definitely the roughest effect on FRC & and one that we should carefully restrict to certain areas or provide a better mechanism for remediating. Better doesn't mean trivially overcome or cheaply overcome, but certainly the options are extremely limited right now.

I'll look into this area further and provide more information soon.

protection from petrification is a level 1 spell!

that's half a joke, but adding a mechanic to protection from alignment may work, or stonebones (level 2) as an option to grant a temporary protection from petrification. as a suggestion, 2 turns a level, extendable to 4 would be adequate, and on par with flame weapon. but also protection from neg energy, is a level 3 spell and grants considerable protections, at 1 turn a level, so I equally suggest 1 turn a level.

I know in earlier variations of FRC, there were items, specifically a purple dragon knight ring, I believe that granted immune from petrification (may have been poison though not sure)


a third option, that's rather less intensive, is simply make it temporary but at a higher time duration than say the petrification traps as produced in other areas of FRC, if your defended for long enough, you live, but long enough that if you are unprotected by friends, then you die. I think that would equivocate the same risk, reward that was intended.

Also, please check to see if Stone to Flesh scrolls are available from merchants. Not too long ago, I was in a group that ran afoul (or would that be abull?) of a gorgon and a party member was petrified. We spread out to wherever we could think of looking for a scroll, but couldn't find any, or any high level arcanists. We ended up doing a kill/ raise, but for RP purposes "dragged" the party member to an NPC who could help, by which time a DM was on to help RP the de-petrifying.

Dorn has some scrolls now just in case, but if they aren't available from NPCs, please consider putting them in someplace.
