Dear Greatgaunt Town Council,
I am a member of the Greatgaunt Volunteers, having risen to the rank of Sergeant Major in recognition of honorable service and retired in good standing, and I write to you today to plead for the acquittal of all wrongdoing for Holance Tanars in his killing of Shiv. I have faith that the council, having demonstrated sound judgment and moral character in the past at similar times and deserving therefore of continued confidence in their judgment, will agree that this is the best course of action. Given, however, that a judgment has yet to be announced, it seems wise to add a voice to those who have spoken before me. My words may sound scolding at times, a point on which I apologize, but at a time when one at least appears to consider a wrongful course, it is the truest of friends who speaks up and alerts you to the true nature of the plan you might be considering.
If you were to execute Holance as a criminal, it would not send a message to the people that would lead them to respect or abide the law. It would demonstrate to them that the law not only fails to take action against known growing threats, such as Shiv's continual promises of blood over the course of at least months, but also that the law punishes those who do in fact step forward to stand up to evil as much as it does those who perform it. It would show the council to be more interested in who does and does not do exactly as they say, to the point of accepting serious injustice without acting against it if they are told to, rather than securing actual justice for the people the council presides over and securing their safety. It would show the council to be jealously possessive over the act of delivering justice to a clear, unarguable murderer, one which the council was sure to condemn to execution and/or outlaw status anyways, rather than being satisfied at the fact justice had been done, and to retaliate in blood over that jealousy and possessiveness. And the council might simply look indignant that the paladin didn't wait for the council to say, "Get him," before acting, when they were assuredly about to, and to again retaliate to this minor slight with blood.
All of these points would be marks simply of control, and would have nothing to do with actual justice, but rather smack of tyranny and pettiness. This would undermine the legitimacy of Greatgaunt's council and foster disillusionment, despair, and a rebellious mindset in the people. It is a matter to be taken seriously, and the wisest course of action to keep the people's confidence in the council's position as wise, legitimate leaders of the town is to acquit the paladin who acted like a paladin of any wrongdoing in the killing of a cold blooded murderer, of all things. This as opposed to, of all things, killing a paladin, a beacon of hope from the heavens above, for being one. It is my sincerest of prayers that the Greatgaunt Town Council has more wisdom than that, and I do have faith that you will continue to demonstrate the wisdom and sound judgment you have demonstrated before by acquitting Holance completely.
Sincerely,
Erynne Perselli
