This continues from an RP thread Manshin started, I provided the link below. I didnt think it would be appropriate to put the answer in an RP forum so I started a new thread here. frc.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=regalgriffon&action=display&thread=1117827987//How do we change our current portraits? ok here is how you change your current portrait WITHOUT bothering the DMs: Remember the portrait .tga files are stored on your own PC, which is why other people get the default portrait if they dont have the files loaded on their computer.. **NOTE: If you have any other characters, local or server vault, using the same portrait they will also be effected by following these steps. 1. Locate the name of the files you are using currently for your character. Look in the portrait folder usually located as follows: NWN\portraits 2. There are usually 5 files that make up the character portrait (various sizes). Once you find the files memorize or write down the name of the files exactly. 3. Make a copy or back up of the current portrait files by copying and pasting with a slightly different file name. Leave the copy in the portraits folder so you can still use these images for future characters. 4. Get new portraits files and rename them to match your original portrait filenames. THE NAME AND SIZE MUST MATCH EXACTLY. 5. If they are not already in the portraits folder paste them there. Next time you load the character, you should see the new images. Remember the trick is no one else will see the changes until they also download the same files you have.

I may be mistaken, but if I were to download that characters custom portrait, using that name, it would override that NWN default portrait on my machine and no longer allow me to see it. So in a sense, the custom portrait would be replaceing the old one for any who download the portrait.
Here is another way you can go without danger of overriding the NWN default portrait that you are curently using. We will have to see if the DMs will do it though. If I do a portrait for you, here is the easiest way I can think of to get it on your character.
Export your character so that it shows up in your local vault. It will have a .bic suffix. i.e. "joeblow1.bic"
E-mail it to me. In return, I will send you your portrait files, all five of them, which you can drop into your own "portraits" folder (if you dont see one in NWN, make one.)
I will open a mod of my own, and customise your character, selecting the new portrait, then E-mail it back to the DM so he can drop the bic. file into the NWN server vault.
Thats it. It will be up to you to forward those portrait files to Grozer (assuming he will still do it.) for everyone else to download.
Remember, this is a gigantic, massive, monumental "IF" Because I have no idea if any of the DMs will be up for putting your new bic. files into the server vault.
If this doesnt work for whatever reason, what I did with Manshin will. I put all my stuff into a cabnet, then I remade. One of the DMs was kind enough to level me back up to where I was. Then I went and got my gear. This is labor intensive for the DMs though, so with luck the other method will work.

NOTE OF WARNING: Cole is correct. The person changing his or her character portrait would in fact know in advance and be able to change the name of the original portrait and save it as another name, therefore saving the file for future use.
The player downloading the new custom portrait would wind up overriding a portrait they already have and lose it. They may not realize they are overriding a file.
So my suggestion is not foolproof but it doesn't require any help from the DM team...

Question #2:
How do we know which portrait is the portrait we are using currently, so that we know which ones to replace?

One way to find out your current portrait is to go download LETO program from NWNVault and open your character file. I usually do this as I have at least 1000 portraits and there's no way I'm going to guess which ones my characters use.

Please, if it is your intent to override your current portrait with your custom one, DO NOT UPLOAD IT TO GROZERS SITE!!! Anyone who downloaded it from there would have one of their NWN portraits overwritten by your custom portrait, and that would not make that person happy.
If you want custom portraits in NWN, like the ones Manshin does, you are simply going to have to beg for DM help. Either remaking and having them level you back to your current state, or modifying and reloading your character bic. file onto the FRC server vault. Those are the only two ways to do it without overriding default NWN images on everyones computer who wants your portrait.
