Lately i joined the ranks of Greatgaunt volunteers. In the first day we were sent to answer the cry for help from Waymoot. After a long march we finally made it to the town, where we met a large group of adventurers of all sorts and the troops of War Wizzards and Purple Knights. The mayor gave a speech and, as we discovered lately, there were already few towns under attack, so the defence of the town laid complitely on the shoulders of the small group of elite troops from the capital, reinforced with the volunteers from Greatgaunt and other towns.
As a crossroad town, Waymoot has two entrances, so we had to split even more. I climbed the roof of a wood shed near the western gates to observe the surrounding: the town walls are low, that an average orc could easily hop over and the trees around as well as the buildings outside would let them to get close to the walls without any threat. The town has no watch towers except for the one with the signal bell, the signal of which we're all waiting for. The each moment lasts forever. Dot tries to be cheerful.
After the first wave we're doing surprisingly well: lost but a few defenders and i even managed to sneak past the gates to steal the banner. However, the situation at the eastern gates didn't go as perfect, so we had to move to aid our fellows to there. Some of the orcs hoped over the wall, the rest were shooting with the bows. War Wizzards proved a great intelligence, disabling the hordes of enemies with their spells, and the Purple Knights proved a great courage this day. I saw with my own eyes how one of knights charged the group of archers in cost of his life to protect the mayor, that was injured with an arrow. That was the ones that suffered the biggest losses: many fell unconcious or were slain at the end of the day...The volunteers fought bravely too, but at the times it appeared that all's lost. The most fierce battle took place at the down. Serg Jabari and the other fighter built a shield wall to resist the orc's pressure, but they were outnumbered and fell unconcious. The gates were blown and the orcs flooded the town. I'm not proud to say, i drank an invisible potion and hid in one of the buildings outside the walls, but there were still orcs around roaming, so i decided to return to aid the ones that lost their concious. When i was back i saw that the small group of survived volunteers still desperately tries to fight orcs back. The battle was already near the town centre. Then something made orcs to retreat, perhaps it was the success at the other fronts, and eventually the last orcs were neutralized or driven off. "The day is ours!" - the cheerful voices spread all around, but surely it was a shaky win.
