Argorn paces the bowels of the cargo Tub. He has spent his time in silent prayer and in vigilant watch over the inventory. A rhythmic rumbling of waves can be heard down in the cargo hold, and it smells of tar and fish. There seems to be plenty of food, water, ale and other supplies. It is said the voyage to Maztica will take 40 days. After three days at sea, the Tub has 47 days of supplies left.

Aboard the steady Tethys, the lookout points and calls out, that something, or someone, is sighted portside in the water. The wind and waves swallows the lookout's voice, but the word "man" is certainly heard. The Captain moves to the side to examine what is in the water. He casts True Seeing and takes a hard look to see if action is required.

A few moments later she dives into the air like a dolphin, her fishtail glittering in the setting sun. She swims along with the ship.

Yarrick glances down at the mermaid as he tends to his duties. A worried frown crosses his face as he whispers to his closest companion.
"Best be wary o' them mermaids. Hear tell they've lured many a lonely sailor beneath the waves on these here sea crossings"
Muttering a few small prayers to the gods, and superstitiously touching his holy symbols for luck, he quickly returns to work.

Kathy rushes up to Licios. Flour streaked through her hair, and her robes look as if she simply brushed the flour off her hands onto them. She would listen to Licios orders. Once he's finished she takes out a parchment writing everything down. Muttering over the parchment it disappears. "Will there be anything else Captain?" She would wait for his answer.
A parchment would magically appear in front of Captian Blake. "We intend to pass Nelanther isles as quickly as possible and make land at Lantan as our last port before we cross Trackless Sea to Maztica. Sir Albayati wishes to know your opinion on the matter. There is also an unidentified ship due west." On the bottom of the letter is a little side note. "I hope everything is going well. I can see why you love sailing so much. I've been so busy I haven't hardly had to time think. Hope to see you when we make port." The letter is signed Kathy.

At ease lounging in the rigging, Dain watches the Mermaid with a gentle smile on his lips.
After she dives away he sits up, obviously taking her parting manner as some sort of warning. After a moment he will make his way as high up as he can. Getting a spot where he can watch the water around the ship with a clear view he settles in with a hunters patience.

Captain Blake and his first mate are watching for the unidentified ship through telescopes directed west "Let me know if you see their colors, Mistress Star. I want to know at once." He summons his wizard. "Jasper, send a message back..." He writes on a small table by the mizzenmast. "Agreed on passing the Isles at speed, have had trouble here before. Lantan are not keen on folk dropping by, but show you're interested in supplies, appeal to their merchanting mind and they may welcome the money. Show no casual magic! *post script* Good to hear you're enjoying yourself, keep busy! Saw a mermaid a while ago, looked like she was just curious but keep an eye open - N. Kathy runs back to Captian Licios with the message from Captain Blake. "Captain Licios, Captain blake agrees on passing the Isles at speed, he's had trouble here before. Lantan are not keen on folk dropping by, but if we show interested in supplies, appeal to their merchanting mind and they may welcome the money. I can't show any casual magic though. What is casual? OHHHHH He seen a mermaid toooo! He thinks she was just curious but warns we should keep an eye out though. Without even thinking Licios would all ready know all about Mermaids, she opens a book and points to the page. "Here read this. It tells you all about mermaids. How sometimes they lure sailors deep into the depths of the seas, and can be a warning for impending trouble. Her violet eyes huge with excitement as she bounces around trying to tell him about the mermaids in the new book she got just for their trip.

The Tub and Tethys make their way further south, and the lights from the island and any lanterns from the smaller ships fade out of view. The unidentified carrack comes closer, and those keeping watch on either the Tub or Tethys, can see that something is clearly wrong. There are no lanterns on the ships, large birds circle above it, and the sails and flags are grey tattered shreds. Stranger still, it moves against the northeastern wind with little resistance.
Then the wind calms to only a light breeze, but the three masted carrack does not slow down.

Licios turns to look around, calling for Alexial: "Take the wheel while I try to get a look at that ship! Keep course straight for Lantan unless I command otherwise!" Yarrick becomes visibly more agitated as the Carrick gets closer and closer, mumbling prayers, swigging from his hip flask and twitching and fidgeting at his clothing. Speaking out loud to Captain Blake and any assembled viewing the approaching ship he can be heard:
"The Bitch Queen, she'll be claiming 'er prize tonight" Mopping sweat from his brow, he continues, "She sent 'er 'Black Jewel' and she means fer a sacrifice"
He looks at his Captain imploringly
"If the stories be true....ye gods..."
He seems to be linking the sight before them with some form of maritime legend, myth or lore he has heard in the past.

The Captain of the Tethys stands glaring at the vessel, the grim demeanor still there as he starts to remember tales. He utters a ripe curse in his native tongue as he stares at the vessel, almost in disbelief that it's there.
"Load the cannon!" He orders. "Stand ready, watch that ship lads and lasses, Valkur may have sent us a test of faith this day! Hold firm and signal the Tub. If any aboard know that vessel they are to inform their Captain immediately, I will await his thoughts but tell him to make a choice quick. I will not risk the lives aboard this vessel but I will not submit to that..." He points his telescope at the carrack. "Send the message to the Tub, Jasper, rest of you make ready to give her a bloody good scar if she attacks and show her a clean pair of heels, if we can outrun the Jewel think of the tales you'll tell ashore!"
"AYE!"
Blake takes the Wheel himself and nods to Yarrick. "Courage, mister, remember who we are!"

Aboard the Tub, Licios hurries down from rigging, shouting orders. "All hands to stations, full sails! We'll do our best to outrun that bastard! Gardrak, prepare to blast that thing. On my command or if it opens fire, I want it burned down to waterline yesterday!"
Hurrying back towards the wheel, he stops to receive Blake's message, then turning to look for Kathy's tiny form. "Kathy, message back to Blake. I'm aware the ship chasing us is Black Jewel, and we'll do our best to outrun it, or to blast it with all we have if we can't. Get to it!"
Coming to halt next to Alexial, Licios turns to look at scampering crew with malicious chuckle and promise to relieve her from the wheel soon. "Unless you want to meet ghoul crew of a cursed ghost pirate ship, I suggest you get to it! If Black Jewel catches us because someone wasn't giving their all, they will hope it'd be only thing after them once I'm done!"
"Kathy, Gardrak! Do either of you have a spell at hand to let me be heard on that ship? I wish to address their captain. Undead they may be, but they're also greedy pirates, so our best bet is to convince them we're more trouble than worth."

Meanwhile below deck Argorn has inadvertently lost track of his trusty companion Sir Frederick.
As he patrols the lower bowels of the tub he spots something moving in the dark. He spots a large dire rat attempting to gain entry to the food supply. Enraged, the dwarf in heavy armor yells at the rat to "GIT!".
The rat turns to the dwarf and creeps towards him.
"GIT gone vermin!" Argorn yells.
Suddenly the rat jumps at the dwarf. Argorn now realizes that the dire rat is nearly as big as he is, and he can see a large scar over one side of the rats face.
Still Argorn is determined to protect his cache. He leaps forward and both dwarf and dire rat collide. They fall to a whirling heap of destruction.
Argorn grabs the rat by the throat and punches it about the body and head. The rat does its best to rake at the dwarfs body with its feet.
Each time Argorn punches the rat, the rat squeaks and bites Argorn.
Eventually they both tire and separate.
"Damn you Frederick, this food isn't for you!" Argorn yells. Argorn fixes his beard and wipes blood from his arm where the rat had bit him multiple times.
Argorn stoops to a knee and drops a piece of bread on the ground.
The large dire rat comes forward and nibbles on the bread. Argorn pulls a small feathered hat from his pocket. The hat has a small buckle which he fastens to the rats head.
"Now got yer arse back to the cot and stay there!"
The rat scurries off to Argorns sleeping quarters and crawls into a makeshift bed that Argorn had made for it next to his own.
Muttering to himself, Argorn checks the food storage to ensure it is okay. He looks up to the deck and wonders to himself what the hells is going on up there. Resolving that it is time for some sunlight he makes his way topside to see what the fuss is all about.

The Tethys keeps pace with the Tub, maintaining her position parallel to the other vessel under the Captain's control. The ports are open, facing the Black Jewel but not firing yet. The two ballistas by the bows are loaded. The crew are waiting. The Captain bellows at them to trim the sails to keep the wind tightly forcing the Tethys along.
"All spellcasters to the side! Smokepowder! Make ready!"

An OOC note:We need to establish something first, that should have been established earlier. Regarding cannons and smokepowder (gunpowder), most (war) ships are probably not outfitted with cannons. Most naval combat is done with ballistae, catapults, alchemist's fire, bow and arrow, grappling hook and boarding for melee combat, or ramming your ship into the other ship. And magic (more than just fireballs!). Smokepowder is still a fairly new invention that was revealed by Gond during the Time of Troubles to the Lantanese (1358, only 21 years ago). From what I could find, cannons and smokepowder does not seem to be used that much outside Lantan, and generally is considered dangerous, expensive to use and a threat to the status quo. While smokepowder weapons certainly exists, it's not quite the Age of Sails. If DMs or players has other canon cannon information, let me know in a PM. To not completely ignore previous RP, the Tethys may still have some cannons, but with deck mounted ballistae, catapults and alchemist's fire as main weapons (keeping it somewhat vague for now). The Tub has no cannons, but a deck mounted ballista that fire alchemical fire-tipped bolts. Not really trying to change the relative balance between the ships, mostly the flavour, to have our cannons closer to canon The ships still have plenty of (magical) fire power, and we can assume both ships have grappling hooks and a supply of alchemist fire in glass and ceramic containers. Now, with that out of the way... the story continues... *rolls dice* forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Smokepowderforgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Blue_Dragons
