Hello everyone! I plan on creating a ranger for my roleplaying character and I just have one question to ask (and possibly more to come ;D). What are the most frequent types of enemies you encounter during your travels? The reason I ask is because I want to pick a favored enemy that will give me an advantage (my character is "supposed" to know the land and its inhabitants of Cormyr anyway). Thanks in advance

There is a bit of everything on this server. I'd recomment to not pick on the most popular type of enemy build wise, but make sure you have a rp reason for your character to truely dislike that enemy if your going ranger.

as someone who has played a ranger here for about 18 months, I suggest not worrying about what will be best, just have good RP reasons for why he hunts them so mercilessly. on FRC RP pays off in spades a lot more than creating a build. People here hate that word

Or, rather than having an extreme loathing for that type of enemy, another reason could be that your PC has crossed paths with a particular species so many times that your character picked up on their habits and such and has figured out the best tactics to track and fight them. Example: My PC who is pure ranger hates orcs above all else for personal reasons, but that wasn't my first pick for favored enemy. So many years spent in his youth at first hiding from and then hunting goblins has given him a better knowledge of their ilk than the more loathsome orc. I just RP'ed until I hit lvl 5 that I knew how to track orcs. Then, once again, my PC's third favored enemy was selected due to a lot of experience fighting that particular enemy.

*tries to bite his tongue* Just a bit of advice Tahl, and feel free not to listen to me if you want ;D (and dont get upset from this post as I am just being my usual *bung-hole* self). First, specing your character to level 40 is not great RP. Sure it gives you an idea of how you want your character to grow, but to be honest, it is better rp to have your characters feats and skills chosen based on experiences your character has and will have. But I am the pot calling the kettle black because when I first came to cormyr, i had done the same thing with hroth. But what i came to realize as i played here, is that having a power build means nothing, and RP is everything, and i have since changed feats and skills i had originally planned for, and now i have no hope of getting epic dodge . Second, asking what the major races are in cormyr in this type of forum is a bit taboo, IMO. Best to ask that IG (this could even be done via the regal griffon). Asking it likes this to "give me an advantage", gives me the wrong impression even if your character is supposed to know the lay of the land. If your character does know cormyr, he would know most definitely about the invasion of arabel by the orc and goblinoid hordes. Beyond that, I am sure your character most likely has not gone crypt diving and/or explored all of cormyr. Third, and here is a bit of powergaming advice, you are most likely not going to reach level 40. I would say that you have good chances of making level 21 in about a year. And this will go by faster if you party up . So ignore me if you will, this is just a little bit of advice from a veteran player. Hope you have fun playing here in cormyr. And like i said, just ignore me if you want . *stops biting his tongue* frc.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=roleplaydiscussion&action=display&thread=1117664744

I know I wont be level 40 anytime soon its just that I like to have a skeleton of how I'm going to roleplay my character out. No doubt that if I roleplay that I run across something that has a great impact on my character I will change stuff around. For my character I have planned out things he might accomplish/not accomplish in his future. So together the build and his future are sort of a like an outline that helps me stay on task of being my character. The main reason I'm asking is because my character has been living in the forests for his whole life thus far and I would want him to have a vendetta against the creatures that caused him and other travelers strife. Thanks for all of your opinions and advice!

As a fella living in Cormyr for all your life, you character would know that there are orcs everywhere. Lots and lots of orcs. Infact, the city of Arabel was recently and nearly completely overrun by them. I would go orcs.
There are differant kinds of players and characters, thats for sure. Hrothgar is adaptable and lives and moves as the cicumstances shift. My own character is ridgid, and I knew what I was going to be from the moment I created him. He has stuck to his focus with only minor changes in his ridgid practices. Thats just the sort of fella he is. So, I dont see any problems in haveing an idea of what you want and working toward it, but like the others have all said, just have a good RP reason for it.
I personally think your question was valid from an IC standpoint as your character should have previous knowledge which you dont. In an area so thickly infested with orcs incrouching on your territory, they make a perfect natural enemy.
One other thing to note, FRC stays awfully close to source material, so if you are wondering about common knowledge that a local "should" know, you can usually refer to the source material in most cases. (If you have it available.) Oh, and I have been on the server for 3 years (give or take) and am watching level 16 slip further and further out of reach with each blundered adventure. At the rate I loose XP, I should reach level 40 around December of 3012. Good luck.
