This looks like the best chance of getting anything close to Neverwinter Nights for a long while. Thankfully it has already reached its inital funding goal a few days after the kickstarter was launched which shows how popular the idea is. The devs are pretty open minded and the community is made up of NWN and UO players so anyone from either game should feel pretty at home. The amount of customization avaibile to player run Shards is arguably even more than NWN with pretty much every aspect of the gameplay being modifiable. A dev already confirmed that it would be theoreticlly possible to write a D&D based ruleset as Lua the scripting language their game is using is quite flexible. I encourage folks even if they do not choose to back the money wise just yet to sign up on the forums and make yourselfs a part of the community so that we NWNers have our voices heard in shaping this game. Like I said earlier the devs are an open bunch and welcome feedback so any questions or concerns you have are best posted on the forums and you should definitely be able to get an answer from them or a knowledgable member of the player community.

shardsonline.com/pledge/ Pledges are back up online so if you wanted to get pre alpha or alpha acess but couldn't during the Kickstarter you can now! Furthermore, the team just had a community roundtable event that you can watch here ( ), new screenies and gameplay shown off

Another honorable mention would be Sword Coast Legends, although it's unconfirmed if they will offer PW functionality: swordcoast.com/

Maybe not for a huge amount of players, but perhaps for small groups. The preorder package gives a tileset, which means theres definitely worldbuilding tools.

shardsonline.com/development-roadmap Development roadmap released at last! Good news is that modding starts in the spring if you purchase the pre alpha admin package the bad news is that custom maps won't be happening until the begining of next year (thats what they mean when they say custom assets). But you will be able to write custom scripts and rulesets for your server using the maps the devs have created which would be a good testing ground in the meantime. Latest community roundtable is up with a TON of good information watch it here I know there has already been talk from at least one NWN server of transitioning over to Shards when the time comes hopefully FRC will be one of them as well

A lot has happened since this was last updated, the most exciting news is pre alpha 2 has launched which means folks who are pre alpha admins can start modding their own servers. Secondly, if you pledged for alpha you will be getting in a stage early aka pre alpha 3 and can still pledge for alpha if you wish. Now, as for community roundtables there has been lots of new content and information to show.
MaY Part 1 - BIG Treat from Citadel you have footage from the playtest so you can see a lot here

So a lot has happened in terms of Shards development since this was updated; most important and exciting news is that pre alpha 2 is finally here which means pre alpha admins can now begin modding. Secondly if you pledged for alpha acess you will be let in a stage early aka Pre-Alpha 3. As for community roundtables a lot has been shown and revealed in terms of content and information. Mays Roundtable was espicially a big treat since they streamed footage of the playtest. So without further a due enjoy!

For the love of god please stop spamming twitch streams. They take up massive bandwidth every time i check the recent posts and for me at least, can cause massive lag when 12 try to load at once while im doing other things, nearly caused a death on frc last night. Please use youtube or something that doesnt just start playing automatically

I concur. This kis killing my computer, which is -not- that bad. I can't even properly post the answer here.
And had to go over to look at "recent threads" instead of recent posts.

Been a long while and a lot has happened since the last update. Shards Online is now known as Legends of Aria, the name change was largely to reflect the expanded scope of the game and is awaiting STEAM release. The game officially went live last year in December though modding tools have not been fully opened up to the whole community but will happen when they have become more refined. In the meantime there has been a team of former NWN players working on a 5th edition ruleset which they will release to the community upon completion and modding tools become available to everyone. There is already one video on youtube which was released last year and they're still hard at work. They've recently put out some very early screenshots of the custom GUI. For those of you who wish to stay updated on its progress and/or volunteer to help out if you have a decent amount of scripting knowledge here is their Discord. Last but not least here are some screenies showing off the modding potential of LoA. Screenshot 1 Screenshot 2Screenshot 3Screenshot 4Screenshot 5

Thanks for the information, satellitemind89. I wonder what PnP aspects the 5th edition team will need to adjust in order to make the transition to the PC. I'm going to look into it more and find out.

I remembering hearing about this when it was called shards, back in maybe 2013 or 2014. I am so happy to see it's still going strong, and looking absolutely -amazing-. If this does indeed become Neverwinter Nights successor, that will be great, but, I think all of us here will agree, that few things will ever come close to the glory of Neverwinter Nights, and all the memories we have of it. But I still keep an open mind regardless! especially with games like this!
