It's interesting to get an answer to this question, before we can discuss what type of roleplay characterizes FRC. Since people enjoy different things at the same time, I made it possible to choose more than one thing at a time in the poll. Each person can fill in all of the choices, but please don't. At least leave some of the choices out. If you filled in several of the choices, it would be nice if you make a post in this thread grading them in which is most important and which is least important for you. Thanks [edited] the last point in the poll ends with "his friends"[/b] damn poll not warning that it will trunkate the sentence.[/edit]

I fill all of those roles at one time or another, and often simultaneously.
I'm also: The Sharer. My fun often involves seeing others have fun too. The Analyst. I delve into the motives of other characters and by extension their player to deduce their core reasons for acting as they do. The Confidant. I often listen to the issues of others and offer a sympathetic ear to their troubles, both in game and out. The Rules Lawyer. I am prone to very strict interpretations of the rules, which exasperates my fellow DM's to no end.
I could not grade these attributes from most important to least, because at one time or another all of these and more are top of my list, while at other times all of them are at the bottom. It depends on the situation and the mood of the game at the time.

I would definitely rank Actor and Storyteller at the top of my list. I love developing my character and taking on his persona in a fictional world, and telling a story through and through with him. To be able to give everybody else something interesting to consider. That is why I put so much work into Fenix, him being my only active character and most thoroughly developed. Thereafter, I would be an IC Instigator, because part of story telling is event, conflict, love, etc. I don't feel like sitting around, I would rather have something fun or interesting happen, and involve whomever I can at the time. The Explorer would fit because the best way to tell a story is to immerse yourself in the world, and learn it to the best of your abilities. And Finally the Thinker. Because who doesnt love some bit of mind work? 1) Storyteller, Actor 2) Instigator 3) Explorer 4) Thinker By importance to me in a storytelling world. And I definitely have to agree and throw in SF's Confidant and Analyst ideas as well. To me, roleplaying is telling a story. What better way to develop that story than to give yourself some more context to work with by analyzing the characters around you and figuring out why they do this or that, or be that shoulder for them when they need it. (Which counts OOCly too, I will always be happy to talk to any player that needs it if they are having troubles with anything, as some players have already found out. )

I agree that they all more or less apply, but I went for actor first. Creating a character concept and roleplaying it out (acting.. through text) is the primary hook for me, only it's even more dynamic because there is no script, or the script can change (development).

I would say actor and followed then by storyteller. The character, its background, its story and the circumstances its where the fun is at.
Actor. Storyteller. Thinker.

I am, in order: 1 - Thinker 2 - Actor 3 - Slayer The three are kind of facets of the same thing for me, really. The characters whose role I act out are themselves slayers of monsters, and they are also thinkers in how they do things for the most part. Even my low wisdom, ditsy Katessa is a thinker in how she fights, within the narrow role of a front line warrioress. I choose characters like that to play because I enjoy slaying monsters, and I enjoy having to think about how I am going to do that. But in doing that, I like to personalize the style to the character who is doing the thinking and slaying so as to act out a particular personality and role, and not just play Pacman against monsters on an NWN server. So those three end up rolling themselves up into one, for me.

Actor as my aspiration..someday I might consider myself an actor through my avatar..might not win an oscar but will have some fun trying.
Watcher(yeah the only vote) applies to what I am doing presently, i watch and learn about others and their characters which gives me an opportunity to interact with others in an appropriate manner. In other words, If I know something about the other players character by studying them, it gives me a chance to approach that character with some substance in order to contribute to a creative and meaningful RP session/opportunity.
Used to be slayer and in the beginning power player...those have become less important the longer I play on this server.

All of them, however. Order of the Stick style party adventuring with people around your level where you're acting how your character would react to the various trials of adventuring life, traps, monsters, inter party relationships, ect. A group of imperfect characters overcome their flaws by learning to work together as a group. Basically what p&p D&D was invented for. That's fun! Roleplaying in the square, philosophizing is fun to a point but getting out there, exploring dungeons and slaying dragons with a bunch of like minded friends? That's what it's all about for me!

I put:
1.) The Actor - First and foremost, it's absolutely about WWMCD. (What would my character do?) Turns out they're lascivious do-gooders, on the whole. 2.) The Storyteller - I enjoy getting to participate in a story that has things actually happen, and impact my character's behavior, though subtle changes are preferable to drastic ones. 3.) The Explorer - I interpret this to include following canon, and I very much enjoy a world where I can see canon when I turn around. 4.) The Slayer - I enjoy seeing the big numbers of Samantha's sneak attack when she rolls high, and seeing Kira's Cursesong wipe-out a stirge spawn. Fighting the enemies isn't necessarily about being the most powerful for me, but about feeling like I'm contributing, and I enjoy this aspect the most when I feel like my character's presence is significant. (Sometimes this even means "slaying" traps or plot-locked doors.)

I consider myself pretty a serious roleplayer, to silly levels sometimes, RP that isn't always particularly fun to, and act out, but kind of feels like it needs doing. I get into my characters, and try to make them my own, and as realistic as you could in a fantasy setting full of raise dead scrolls at every corner shop. Most of mine have changed somehow, developed through their life journey. They win and they lose, and that's part of what life is. I love to see RP that takes into account the weaknesses and parts of a character that is a challenge to overcome.
I think I'd come under Actor, for that, and storyteller - FRC is the canvas, it's full of great colours and people to paint with, go!

1) Actor, 2) Storyteller, 3) Thinker My characters are why I play. I strive to make them as real as I can. But I enjoy seeing a story roll along, too- it's why I really don't often play straight FPS games anymore. The third is just because I love puzzles, thinking at things from different angles, and generally keeping my mind active.

I am more...
Explorer and Watcher.
I dont approach very many people. I like my time to be drama free, so... I explore on my own when there isnt much pickings. RP to each of us has its own flare what sparks our matches of what we like and we all settle into our own groups. I think most of us from level 1 to level 10 fall into the Hack and Slash mode to get levels. By then we have developed enough relationships in game we are able to find parties and have found a node in the server to belong to. The difference in exploring and watch might seem far and wide, but when you watch you hear things and places that you might like to explore... This translates into RP to gain a group to check it out. Shesh hardly ever partied with a group, but those he did party with he treasured. Pew, started out as one thing and has been molded from about level 4 on to his current level by events from early on in Cormyr. It has created many many hours of fun for me and I hope those that instigated it. He is slowly getting comfortable with Fenix, and a hin which I wont name. And then last night he finally got to adventure with a Mage that said Hin taunts... Its been fun to develop Pew. But he started as a watcher, and has become a Explorer and mild instigator.

I fall under story teller and thinker. I love telling stories of the old days on FRC, I love coming up with good tales and solid backgrounds to my characters. I also love solving problems IG, whether is a riddle, dm puzzle or a plot issue.

I would like to point out that the stories we tell to ourselves in the comfort of our thoughts are not always the stories that other here.
I am a power gamer, I want my characters to be first of all effective. As i mentioned in another thread, my characters develop through interaction with the world and the PC's within it. All of the other types mentioned are tried to a greater or lesser extent.

I looked for "The Dongder". But it would make sense that can't be chosen... Being that there may be only one.

I am an A-The drive for me is portraying my characters realistically and challenging myself to create more interesting and engaging characters. S-I love participating in and adding to the ongoing story of FRC. S-I tend to play combat-oriented characters because I thrive on dungeon rp and love challenging myself in those encounters. E-I greatly enjoy seeing all the server has to offer and appreciate the efforts to make it ever-changing. T-One reason I am drawn to Dwarves is their tendency to methodically plan their efforts and consider implications.

The actor whom watches, thinks, tells you a story then explores that which they tell. Is what I aspire to be.

I would say actor and followed then by storyteller. The character, its background, its story and the circumstances its where the fun is at. Actor. Storyteller. Thinker. Lately, I think my profile fits more that of a Storyteller, followed by Actor and then Thinker. Creating bios and background stories as I develop my character in-game is an interesting way of portraying who they are as they progress through their respective arcs. Also... Bump to give the newer community members a chance to discuss!

I like storytelling and character portrayal, and I like to portray characters who think to solve problems and at times kill stuff in combat. But to me, what my character fights and how, and what conflicts the character doesn’t get involved in and what s/he solves without combat, is part of the personality and the story.

I would think myself a blend of the actor, instigator, story teller and watcher depending on my mood and which character.
