Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but... anyway, here it goes Could anybody tell me a bit about familiars? What are they? Where do they come from? How does a wizard acquire a familiar? Can it be "transferred" from a wizard to another? Aaaaah, too many questions... *has a nervous breakdown*

Oh, and since I'm on the questions stage anyway... Is the exact date in Cormyr determined? How can I see what day is today, if I can at all? Thank you beforehand, whichever doubtslayer will come around

Familiars begin as a creature of their type and gain abilities through the process that makes them a familiar. AS the ability that grants a spellcaster a familiar is called Summon Familiar, it can be considered that the effect calls the creature to the role.
A familiar cannot speak unless creatures of its base type normally can speak, with the exception of the raven which gains the ability to speak a single language as part of becoming a familiar. Pseudodragons don't speak, they make cat-like sounds (hisses, growls, purrs, and the occasional chirp). They can communicate telepathically in Common and Sylvan with creatures within 60 feet.
I can't find faerie dragon in my books right now but I've seen it before so I'll check again.

They're in Draconomicon, and normally speak Draconic and Sylvan only, and can converse with any animal. They also have the option of learning to speak Common, Elf, and Gnome.

As to whether familiars can be transferred, I don't have any source that says they can't, but I think it is safe to say they can't. A familiar's powers are an extension of the power of the master it serves. By that reasoning, even if a familiar could transfer, none of its current power would transfer with it.
According to the Player's Handbook (PHB), a familiar is a normal animal that becomes a magical beast when it is called into service as a familiar. However, NWN treats all familiars as belonging to someone with the Improved Familiar feat from FRCS, and not all of the base creatures there are normal animals.
The PHB list of familiars is: Bat, Cat, Hawk, Lizard, Owl, Rat, Raven, Snake, Toad, Weasel
The Improved Familiar feat from FRCS: Tressym, Eyeball, Imp, Pseudodragon, Quasit, Night hunter bat, Formian worker, Shocker lizard, Stirge
Improved Familiar feat also specifies that the familiar can only be one alignment step from its master. This was a non-issue with the normal familiar list because all normal familiars were animals and all animals are true neutral.
