We are still engaged in the effort of reducing lag, and are continuing the project. I am just getting back to it after a couple of weeks break.
The first thing that is going to change are the dyes we use in the module. This is an impressive package, but it is cumbersome on the system. I will be removing all of the "superfluous" colors from most of the merchants. There are just so many, and items in merchants inventories actually use system resources.
This leads us to the next step which is to be merchant inventory reduction. I will (finally) be getting around to this... this means we will be removing many items that are "doubled up" and that are not needed in more than one store. The end result is that you might have to go further to find certain items, but you will enjoy less lag, hopefully.
Redmist is a long time sore spot... this will be totally redesigned, possibly reduced in size. I may have a module event to explain this, but I will have to play around with the toolkit to see how I want to go about doing this. The city will certainly be divided into quarters, or at least halves. Some merchants are going to outright disappear and many citizens will need to be reduced. I will try and maintain the feel of the city, but it definitely needs to change.
I will keep a running post here as to what changes you can expect in the near future.
Cheers!

I do have one question in regards to the merchant reductions. Why was the merchant in the welcome room changed so that he did not carry potions? Was it an abuse issue? I do know he had the best prices on potions in all the realms, but it seemed like a reasonable price. Now it seems that everyone will be paying nearly double for the same type of potion.

Yes, there were some changes due to abuse, but beyond that it was strictly to reduce the amount of items he carried. In discussions we decided that the starting merchant should be just that. Some in module pricing will be changed along with the other upcoming changes. I promise I will work to get things into balance asap.

I don't see how the merchants can be so bad. This is the only server I've ever seen that uses a scipt to clean out their inventories when someone sells them something.

I have started enacting alot of these changes. Some were in todays load, there are more on the way tommorow. Hopefully we see even more improvement after patching to CEP 1.52 as well.
Cheers!

Possible reasons for lag-
PC's having a full inventory with full containers. The more stuff you have, the more lag you create.
Character exporting every few minutes. Server-wide exporting of PC's with full inventories with full contianers in their full inventories causes extreme lag while the server is struggling to save all that to disk.
Make sure harddrive(s) is/are defragged.

Since crashes are now fairly minimal, I think I will try extending the time between PC export saves to 15-20 minutes, rather than every 10 minutes.
Also, please do clean out your inventories as much as possible... by all means, convert to bank notes, asap!

Why do you need 3 dolls, 4 pots of red dye, 8 pots of purple, 10 empty pouches, 32 quivers, 118 ettercap glads, 2000 pieces of leather/steel/iron? In all fairness to those around you, please, please empty em'! Cheers!

Give up my attempt at the Suzail Book of Records with my 2345 ettercap glands!? *sighs*

You could always add more space, and more lag, by filling your entire inventory with bags of holding and filling those with ettercap glands. And just to let you know, if you did this you could hold 3150 ettercap glands ...

I actually came upon him in the Bramblewood gathering ettercap glands to fill the bags he had just bought to test a "theory" of his. needless to say Vind decided to help him gather ettercap glands. (he said it would help you know which way was east) ;D *sigh* now where did I put tose episodes of Neverending Nights?

*shakes his head in amazement* must be an engineer *sniffs* this means the end of Keet's hundreds and hundreds jewel collection? I had roleplay reason for it *chuifs* - save, preserve and keep beauty to increase prices - but for the sake of the server I can do this supreme sacrifice, and put many of Keetena's received gifts to an end too, thanks all that gave Keetna rings, jewels, clothes and other many gifts *chuifs* I'll see what more I can delete of inventory like dozens of potions (this makes me fear since when morg barbarians appears I need at least a few dozens to at least try escape alive). Time to list inventory to donations to church ...
