As with the entrance of 5 new DM's... one has to wonder... How did they become DM's?
One would assume they were born DM's, like Justi and such. But I have a feeling these 5 were chosen.
Now it leads me to the question, how? Did they ask to become DM's? Did you just say "Hey you, wanna be a DM?" Or did you just watch everyone in general and whoever has been "all that you can be" You approached and granted DM-ness to them...
Now I apologize in advance for any floods of requests to become DM, but this is also a warning to the New DM's and potential Wannabe DM's...
Think about what you are losing... You gain almighty power and knowledge and ability to travel wherever you like... But then the surprise stops... The challenge and mystery disappears... If you become a DM with "Phenomical Cosmic Powers" You lose the ability to be a "true" player... I am sure that you can continue "playing" but you'll know everything and its tricks. Ever seen justi come upon a monster and say "Crap... never seen that before"?
Well back on topic... How did the DM's go about Becoming DM's?

We were specially bred and raised to become DMs... Actually, it's as you said, the current DMs take notice in who all is doing what, and from their actions, rp ability, and various other things, they pick the ones that they deem the best suited for the job of DM. Now... As far as surprises are concerned, I helped Justi on my very first mod as a DM. And let me tell you... The stuff that was thrown out at people, and the things that happened were just... Wow... It's one thing to actually be battling something and working for that hard earned xp and gold everyone's after, but to just be privy to sit and watch... It was totally awesome. Also, I've jumped from place to place, found out a few things existed that my PC had only speculated, but... That doesn't mean I know exactly where they are or how to get there. Besides, I'll vouch for the fact that even if I did, I'd end up getting lost on the way back to those places mainly because there are so many maps to go through to get to anything. Anyhoo... Back to the subject at hand... We get picked. And some day, when one of us has to leave for a while or we decide just to step down again, some lucky player will be the next of the chosen...

It's really a very simple process as Aodhan mentioned. We simply observe those that have great things to offer the community in terms of role-playing abilities, general attitude, and the like. Those that demonstrate excellent skills of sportsmanship, fair play and role-playing are generally our top picks.
Basically, each DM "nominates" a candidate, then we discuss the pros and cons of the individual, eventually arriving upon our choices.
There are several people still on our list, and nobody should feel the lesser for not being picked. We have inducted five this week, and I feel that will be enough for this round, most likely, but as I mentioned there are still a few on our list we may want to approach.
Oh, and yes, we simply ask the candidate if they would be interested in a position of DM.
Anyway, the clearest path to becoming a DM on FRC is to be on your best behavior at all times, role-play your booty off at all times and have a decent sense of humor about yourself and the game...
When the need arises, if you fit into the mold, you will be called upon.
I hope that helps.
Cheers!

Interesting questions Spooks... I have one myself and I am hesitant to ask. Hope this doesn't come off in the wrong way, but I'm curious since many of the DMs enjoy the server as players, how they keep the two worlds separate? I mean I have a hard time myself trying to keep things I learn OOC from impacting my IC actions, I would imagine this is 10 times harder for DMs.

Truthfully we choose DM's who have demonstrated that they are not "meta-gamers". Also, our team discusses issues constantly, and we are not afraid to check each other when necessary. It just takes a very conscious effort, but it is certainly not impossible. Hope that helps.

Actually, Grozer, it's really no different from playing two PC's. One knows things the other doesn't. At least that's how I looked at it when I was a DM on another server.
As far as enjoying both, I actually found DM'ing more enjoyable. Instead of playing one PC (those that know me know that I hate playing multiple PC's and only play one at a time), but as a DM I constantly hop from one NPC to antoher striking up one conversation after another- each NPC having its own personality. It's a lot of fun and it adds life to the towns.

Umm ... me think I spell name correct ...
Umm ... me wonders what question 13 means: "What does the good of the server mean to you?"
Does it mean, when Quad happy, everyone happy? In that case, server goodness mean Quad level 40 epic character with smite ability!
*few days later* ooohhh why mine application say "R-E-J-E-C-T-E-D" in red letters?

Actually not to split hairs, but they are quite different IMHO, since as a DM you see "everything" not just what your second character is exposed to. Therefore I would expect it to be a lot harder to keep them separate. Not that it cant done mind you, just wondered out loud is all...
