i usually just go along with the act if someone is in disguise. so far i haven't seen any obvious give-aways from people in disguise, but if you hear their voice, that's another story.
a person's voice is very hard to disguise if you've spend alot of time talking to that person. in such i case i'd ask for an appropriate skill check.
and yes i do agree that mugging someone would yield far bigger rewards.

pickpocketing is perhaps the biggest waste of skill points on most servers. Even moreso than bluff and perform simply because of all the people that whine about being pickpocketed.
PP, PvP, and the like are part of role playing. Yes, you have bandits walking the roads, but all they do is attack everyone. All just hack and slash. It's nice to have some role playing from the villians.

I think you mean Bluff and Persuade. Perform is a very useful and necessary skill for bards since the abilities Bardsong has is based on it.

About catching a pickpocket, I imagine this goes off the spot skill, but I have a question. Even a block headed warrior with no spot skill can keep his eye on his possessions if he is suspicious that a pick pocket is tailing him. With Manshin, if I am ever suspicious, I will open my inventory and make sure nothing is disappearing. Is this metagaming? Just because you dont see the thief in the act of stealing it doesnt mean that while you are sublty watching your coin purse, you wont notice it vanishing. While you certainly didnt see the thief take it.. if there is only one grinning halfing anywhere near you.. that is a pretty good indication right? So wether or not I make my spot check, at least I know I am being pocket picked by someone in my close vicinity. The problem here is that while you (the player) are likely to be wary of pick pocketing and can multi-task with managing your inventory... you (the character) won't spend every waking second checking their packs and pouches in constant paranoia. The "character" MUST see the pickpocket attempt not you just looking at your inventory, acting without spotting is indeed metagaming. The spot check is there to see if your character notices and you must recieve the name of the thief in the message log to take action against them. Also remember that just because there is only one PLAYER near you when you are stolen from that there are meant to be many, many NPCs as well that aren't there simply because there would be far too many commoners around. Say you suddenly notice something has gone... if you didn't make that spot check then you didn't notice WHEN it got taken because the character saw nothing. You can't just assume its the only player nearby just because something disappeares either since there are likely to be commoners around that the thief was using as a distraction (again just not included due to lag issues). The bottom line is: If you make the spot check and get given their character name in the log (which you should screenshot) then great, you can chase them. If you fail the spot well tough, the character didn't notice so you can't act on it without metagaming.
