It’s a lively day in one of Suzail’s many marketplaces. As every day, countless folk are seen wandering about, shopping for today’s dinner or just chit-chatting away the afternoon. It’s a lively, yet all too mundane and comfortable atmosphere…
… until the tiny figure of a young hin woman, garbed in robes as white as her hair, tied back into a long ponytail, raises her voice from the top of a market-stand she swiftly climbed onto. Her radiant eyes sparkle with the kind determination which some’d call religious fervor and others blind, fanatic madness as she raises her brilliant staff above her head and speaks. It is a pleasant voice, kind yet firm, the sort that carries easily and belongs to one used to and not afraid of speaking in front of people. Even so, it seems to carry further than it should, as if her very voice had magic of its own.
And boy, does the bard-priest of Torm lack fear as she speaks her message, a message that likely no sane person would proclaim for fear of retribution:
“Citizens of Suzail! Cormytes! Travelers, Locals, Adventurers, all you good folk that calls the fair Forest Kingdom home no matter why, lend me an ear!”
She raises her free hand towards the audience in a wide arc; staff still held high above her head as her gaze wanders across the crowd. Her frail figure is unimposing at first glance, but her every gesture seems to carry the same zeal and passion evident in each of her words.
“All over the realms, the Kingdom of Cormyr is known to be a land where justice reigns! A country of wise kings, brave men and women, a country where the rule of law is fair if firm, a land that has weathered all fate has thrown at it for centuries, for over a thousand mortal years! Savage hordes cannot break it, and the words of the wicked can gain no hold onto its people's heart!”
She gazes upon the crowd with a stern gaze, but it’s as full of admiration as her words, her graceful hands moving in unison with her voice, as if to underline every word with a gesture of determination.
“Yet even so, there are those who think they will find easy prey here! There are those who believe they can exploit loopholes in the local laws, that the people of Cormyr are fools enough to value the letter of the law above its meaning –
HAH!
I say!
Cormyr is a land of justice! It is a place where the law is interpreted by men of honour, not sleazy advocates twisting it to grease their pockets!
There are those who think they can sow the seeds of corruption – and they’ve won a victory, however small! I’ve only just returned from the Western Reaches, where only recently the servants of the dark gods had tried to drive a wedge into the unity of fair Cormyr, only for it to be undone by might and mercy of the Steel Regent and your dragoneers!
Yet the servants of darkness have not surrendered! Once more their black hands reach for power, and it’s not dark magic I speak of, no – the servants of the Maiden of Pain, the Willing Whip, have reached for political power, here, in Cormyr, taking over the operations of a cormyte militia, hiding behind the notion that their faith is not listed under the Proclamation of Illegal Worship –
HAH!
I say!
Listen to this humble Tormtar or speak with the sages of your own faiths, but all can confirm: Their wicked goddess of torture, their church of depraved sadists who once called the Lord of Murder their master is torn between whether to serve the Black Hand or the Maiden of Loss, and both of those are outlawed! Would you let the henchmen of a known murderer into your homes? “
She pauses for but a moment as if to catch her breath before fierily raising her voice once more, thrusting the tip of staff into the sky as she gestures to the people below.
“I say NO!
The people of Cormyr are not fools, are not deceived as easily by the false smiles and promises of the servants of the dark gods! They do not fall for such base trickery; they scoff at those who’d try to wiggle their way through what they deem a loophole in the fair laws of the Forest Kingdom!
In this country, this land of proud and brave folk, it cannot be allowed for the priests of darkness to hold even as minor an official position as a rank in a militia! What do you care about such trivial matters in the reaches, you say?
WILL YOU STILL SAY IT WHEN YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONES STAND IN FRONT OF A GUARD AND CAN’T KNOW WETHER HE IS A PRIEST OF THE GODDESS OF TORTURE?
This is not how it was in the Cormyr of your forefathers! This is not how it was in the Cormyr you grew up in, and it WILL not be that way in the Cormyr your children will grow up in, if we act now!
The Crown of Cormyr is not one that ignores the voice of the people! If the people raise their voice to outlaw a faith that is but a minion of the dark gods already outlawed, one that stands for NOTHING but suffering and the perverse pleasure its priests gain by inflicting it, their voice SHALL. BE. HEARD!”
She thrusts her staff into the air again and again in tact with her lasts words, her eyes burning with zeal and her free hand skillfully accompanying her speech.
“So people of Cormyr, raise your voice! Let the crown know you do not wish such people to hold office here, not now and not ever! Come to me here or visit the Temples of the Triad to sign the petition to outlaw this wicked faith along with the vile gods that they call their allies and masters that you already banned from this realm! Even if you dare not give your name, here in the capital, you are not alone! You are surrounded by those who share your wish for the Cormyr you have always known, a fair and just Cormyr free of fear! So even if you do not wish to stand for this with your name, stand for it with your voice, so loud that it will reverberate across all Suzail! Raise your voice with me! Not for me, not for the triad, but for yourself, your families, friends and children –
FOR
CORMYR!”
Her last call echoes across the marketplace as her staff slams into the air one last time as if to pierce the very heavens. As she finishes she gazes across the marketplace, her breath coming quickly, exhausted from all the shouting and passionate gesturing. Finally, she hops gracefully of the market stall and takes a seat nearby, unrolling a long scroll of parchment and readying a quill, shooting a friendly smile at all who come close (and are not servants of evil looking for a fight!).
//Yeah, not gonna god-mod how the crowd reacts, whether Tasha gets any signatures, whether anybody joins her last shout or whether the War Wizards drag the crazy chick off, that’s something for a DM not some silly Thrymster to decide! For the record, Tasha’s an actual cleric-bard though, so she can do a pretty swell Perform: (Oratory) check full of flaming mad fanatism fiery religious fervor! ;D
Any players please feel free to have your chars have been there and approach Tasha whether to start an argument or … sign her petition! If your character isn’t there but’d go to a temple to sign it later, please just post below as well!

As the sound of the hin's voice breaks over the market place din, heads begin to turn. For a time, the atmosphere remains unchanged, but for the sound. The hin lass continues on however and more folks turn their heads.
Most are curious at the sight of an incited albino hin. Once the words begin to penetrate the market air, more begin to listen.
A handful of displaced citizens from Redmist, now settled in Suzail, pay close attention to the words. Several pious and righteous market visitors raise shouts of agreement.
Several shop keepers cry shouts of protest, seeing their customers turning away from their booths to watch the spectacle.
Most watch in curiosity, neither in protest or support.
As the white-clad hin reaches the culmination of her speech, a Sergeant of the Suzail Guard steps up to her side, towering over her, he places a hand on the woman's shoulder. His gaze is on the market crowed.
"Back to your business! There's nothing more to see here! Off you go now, back to your business!"
Slowly the crowd begins to disperse, their curiosity sated. The merchants are only too happy to return their attentions to the shoppers. Those formerly of Redmist and those who shouted encouragement look on silently.
"That's enough young woman" the guard intones quietly, bending down as he speaks, sounding tired and irritated, "Save the preaching for your temple. Off you go now. The market's no place for this. Off you go or I'll have to take you in to maintain the peace."
Several pairs of eyes watch the guardsman as he resumes his rounds. They glance to the hin and then begin to talk among themselves, or go about their business.

Apparently content enough with having given her speech and gained sufficient attention, the Tormtar complies with the guardman's request and quietly finds herself a spot for various folk to wander over and sign her petition, smiling softly. Her stainless white attire still makes her rather easy to find, luckily!

Sister Abigail, on seeing the petition does not sign it. To any nearby she gives reason:
"There are very few with more c-cause to want to see the wicked cult of Loviatar banished from Faerun than I. I am a healer of Ilmater, and I have known persecution, torture and murder at t-the hands of the Scourge Maidens. But I will not sign this petition."
"Outlawing this or any faith cannot stop it. However it will make it more d-dangerous by driving it under ground where it s-shall have to be p-practiced without r-reguard to the law. I have seen t-this happen. Made outlaws, they will only try to o-organize in s-secret, infect noble houses, silence t-those who oppose t-them, and spread their perverse influence like a cancer until they have true power; unseen, but very much f-felt. If you want proof, look no further than the horrors of Mulmaster where Loviatar's dominion is supreme and now openly tyrannical.
Tis better the e-enemy you can see and know t-than that which lurks in shadows."
"The thought of the Loviatar gaining p-political power here terrifies me, but only t-the naive believe laws w-will stop wicked p-people from doing evil. I don't w-want to see anyone barred from their f-faith, no matter how I may dislike it."
"Rather I suggest we take it into our own h-hands to d-demand from our l-local Lords that they h-have the sense to n-never allow such wicked folk to take positions of p-power over others. Is it not the most common of sense that one w-who chooses to follow a wicked God will misuse power and harm o-others? And if you d-do not have a Lord you may redress, as is the case in Great Gaunt, then ask of the Crown that such a Lord be appointed. There is no place for s-secret council among g-good an honest people. Rulers should be accountable for their choices."
"When it comes to these evil cults, I say, tell them they are f-free to bring r-ruin on their own lives in the evil they c-choose to worship, but t-that they shall never gain authority over good people through p-political power. Laws are but useless placebos to make people feel as though they have d-done good. They never stop crime, only up the stakes and turn the pick pocket into a cutthroat. Only a just people willing to demand just and accountable rulership can stop the rise of evil in our land, not parchment and ink."

A small cough is heard from the side as a bright white figure makes it way over. The frail looking, robed hin leads a small vial to her lips and takes a sip before turning her gaze towards Abby, a gentle smile gracing her features.
"Ah, as expected of the Church of Ilmater, tis good points you raise.
You speak of the enemy you can see opposed to those you can not. You speak of accountability, and truely, I support the notion that a secret council is a thing that should not be in a land where justice reigns as much as you do."
Her eyes narrow a bit, a stern gaze supplementing her unfading smile.
"But a good law is not a placebo.
A good law is the will of it's people.
A good law provides the very accountability you speak of.
You speak of the Whip working in the shadows if outlawed? And yet you know as well as I do that tis their way to do so either way - the difference is that /right now/, even when found after their intrigues they. are. NOT. accountable!"
The bard-priests radiant eyes sparkle with enthusiasm as she speaks, nimble hands adding force beyond her words to each with timely gestures.
"/Right now/, a cleric of the Willing Whip is commanding a volunteer militia in the reaches, approved by local law enforcement.
/Right now/, this is accepted.
/Right now/, nobody stands against this.
/Right now/, this sets a /precedent/.
The servants of evil act now, openly, and no one will stand against them! They hide behind loopholes, abuse what is meant to represent the will of the people, and where they succeed but once, they'll try anew! But most of all, they use the greatest problem in Cormyr right now:"
Her gaze wanders over whoever is gathered, slowly and calmly, before she closes her eyes and speaks, for once without dramatic gesturing.
"Complacency."
Her eyes open once more, her firm voice picking up fervour as she speaks, her staff pointed at Abby:
"You said it yourself! Only a JUST PEOPLE willing to DEMAND just and accountable rulership can stop the rise of evil in our land! Well then, priestess, where are your demands?
Why can I not hear your voice?
Why can I not hear the voices of so many servants of the divine in this land, of those who should make a stand? Of those who, when faced with the servants of evil walking down our streets openly, preaching their wicked ways, should raise their voice and say NO - this far, and not further!
You know what is the arguement I get from servants of good here when they oppose this petition?
'But the servants of evil might get angry and /do/ something!'
Is /that/ what it has come to? Have we truely given up our fight for a country where justice rules and people walk without fear? Are we infact so paralyzed with fear we sit here and do nothing but mumble about how things -could- be so much better?
If you want an accountable council in Greatgaunt for the good of the people, then it is upon YOU as a PRIESTESS to stand up and get it done! Raise your voice, and mine shall join it, even if you won't lift yours to support my cause!
Because we both know the servants of the Whip work from the shadows even now when they are legal, for none who are not corrupt to begin with would ever listen to their words when they act in the open. The difference this law makes, the difference it makes to outlaw them, is that once their smiling masks have fallen, they can be judged for their crimes, for undermining the rule of law, for worshipping fiends, for opposing the work of those who'd seek to ease and for spreading suffering for their own deranged pleasure and that of their vile deity! Drive them underground? The Willing Whip already corrupts from the shadows! The law does not cause them to not do so now, and yes, it will not stop them from trying, but it will make it possible to punish them when their schemes fail!
Does the law stop murder? Does the law stop theft?
No. No, it does not, this is true. I've spent enough time on the streets myself to know this.
But the law allows us to punish the wicked. It allows us to remove elements that would seek to bring harm to the good folk, free from arbitrariness and vigilantism, in an orderly and just fashion. The rule of law, the rule of the will of the people given form, is the very difference between a fair kingdom and a despotic hellmouth."
Once more the Tormtar's gaze wanders over the gathered folk as she leans onto her staff before focussing her gaze on the Ilmateri.
"Dearest sister. I know that punishing the wicked is hardly the priority of the Crying God and his clergy, least of all that of the healers sworn to non-violence. But I ask you to consider what this success would mean.
Success means showing the fair folk of Cormyr that yes, they can take a stand against the wicked! That yes, they can appeal to their nobles, and that yes, the Forest Kingdom is one nation, under the grace of the heavens, where the people and their rulers can stand united against the tides of darkness!
It shows people that they do NOT have to put up with necromancers and dark priests parading through their towns in a mockery of all that is fair and just, hidden under the flimsy covers of legal loopholes! It shows that change for the better can happen!
So maybe you think this will only have a neglible effect in itself.
Maybe you truely do not believe the law can change a thing, as much as it'd sadden me to hear a fellow servant of the Triad believe such.
But maybe you would like to raise your voice, if only to show the people of Cormyr that the servants of the divine are willing to stand up against the forces of darkness, and that with the might of the people behind us, we can accomplish change.
Even if it's with one small step after another."
With that, she extends the petition towards the healer, clear blue eyes gazing up straight into the human woman's.

Malar's worship is legal. His adherents still do abominable things. If you want proof, poke around in Dhedluk some time. Monitoring does not happen in actual practice. Legality only makes a farce of a legal system that is supposed to protect people from terrible evils.
And do not expect the law to restrain evil. It does nothing of the sort. It only restrains the hand of those who look to the law as a respectable guide and actually care what it says. To those who wish to do evil, it is merely an obstacle to work around and a tool to hide behind from good people who would see them punished. Good conscience can never be legislated.

A tall, handsome brown-haired man in his late twenties and wearing grey robes listens to the debate and finally speaks. "Sister Abigail, though my esteem and respect for thee is much, I feel it necessary to point out something. We Cormyreans are not so easily cowed nor swayed by the guile of evil-doers, whatever fate befell Mulmaster I sincerely doubt it could happen here. Forsooth, thou speakest unfairly when calling naive most of the civilized world, for most of us recognize that laws exist to protect the innocent more than prevent the wicked from doing what they will. Mercy ought be the province of those who deserve it, and none for those who bring pain, torture and misery upon others."
He steps up to Tasha and with a smile signs the petition:
Squire Lionel Bresbane, Paladin of Ilmater of the Companions of Noble Heart.

In slight frustration as Lionel signs, Abby answers:
"Lionel, coersion is not our way. We do not force others to do as we want through threat of violence. If the Lovitar wish to sell their souls to their demon, it is their choice to do so. Murder and torture are already illegal. Your place is to stop them when they try to harm others through it. Ask yourself, what sort of society do we become when we restrict people's freedoms simply because they "may" commit crimes?"
The small healer continues, addressing both Lionel and the halfling speaker:
"This law will do nothing to stop the practice of Her worship. However it will turn passive followers into dangerous ones. Rather than using magistraits to address grievences, they will be forced to act as gangs and use violence to settle disputes."
"Consider Marrisa who has just found a position in the Volunteers of Great Gaunt. Had this law been in effect, do you think she would be calling herself a Loviatar? She would simply hide what she was as she sought power. How could I protest her appointment if I did not know w-what she was? She and her kind would kill people like me t-to stop us from exposing her."
"As things are now, it is very much in the interest of the Loviatar to use legal channels to retaliate against my protests instead of violence like a gang."
"Its true the Loviatar are almost certainly torturing people and having their perverse rituals in the dark of n-night somewhere. They could not p-please their demonic Goddess if they were not, however we are more l-likley to catch them a-at it now when w-we know who they are, so that the law c-can punish those involved."
"This law will do nothing except make them harder to spot, and more ruthless. No law e-ever stopped a criminal. It only forced them t-to be more crafty and ruthless in their t-transgressions. People in a r-rush to put something on paper that s-says they are against this or that forget the consequences of the unseen. Those negative backlashes that arrise from over-legislation."
She concludes:
"Free and just people punish evil done upon others, but leave individuals free to d-destroy their own lives if it is what they wish. It is not our place to claim ownership over their lives, that we might tell them what f-faith they may practice. You say Cormyr can never be corrupted as Mulmaster, I say this is how it starts. One well-meaning law at a time to restrict the liberty of our people. Mulmaster has many many laws. But laws do not solve problems, they only create more "criminals" which call for even more laws, until at last you find the laws have become insane, and you live in a tyranny with more laws than people, and e-everyone is a criminal."

"Thou speakest of unjust laws. Those who truly wish to bring ruin upon Cormyr will do so regardless of the legality, a point upon which we both agree. However, legal measures ensure that there will be justice meted out in courts, not by vigilantes and self-appointed heroes whose actions can and do cause more harm than good."
His normally warm brown eyes turn stern as he finishes his reply."I signed this petition because I believe that the goodfolk of Cormyr desire an end to malodorous, misbegotten, pestilential rotters posing as innocents. I believe that there comes a time when we cannot stand idle whilst unchecked evil spreads its black wings and attempts with sweetened poison to dig a foothold into the firmament of our beloved country. And I signed it because I strive ever to oppose the will of that tyrannical whore-goddess and her minions."

It insures no such thing Lionel. However it all but guarantees that our enemies will act far more ruthlessly than they do now, and that they will be far harder to locate and stop. Perhaps that does not seem troubling to some of you warriors signing this petition, but the vast majority who will pay the price of the violence that will follow are not warriors. They are normal people and healers like me.
I doubt there is a person in this crowd who has more reason to hate or fear the Loviatar. I was hunted for three years, living as a fugitive in Mulmaster's slums while those monsters stalked us, torturing and murdering whomever they wished "legally." I watched as they tortured to death one of our sisters to get to us. However all the anger and all the tears in the world will not change reality one bit: Prohibition of anything does not now, nor has it ever worked. It is a losing battle and we shall all pay the price of it, some of us in blood.
You'll do nothing more than turn a wicked temple who corrupts the willing into a crime guild who has no interest in working within the bounds of the law.
If you want to make a differance, help me abolish Great Gaunt's secret council and get a proper and open Lord who would have to answer his people why he allowed a Loviatar to lead his volunteer milita. It is our duty to teach Ilmater's way, and warn others of Loviatar's evil. Not threaten them with force for making ill choices. You are an Ilmateri, not some Justicar of Torm. The answer to almost all problems is ethical involvement and teaching, not the coersion of prohibition.

::Velisario stands listening to the back and forth inside the Defender's Temple, eventually stepping in and giving his view on the matter to the conversing Ilmateri and Tormish::
The way I see it is that the faith that is being practiced in view of ordinary Cormyrians is a watered down, "soft" version meant to appease the laws of the land. I have heard a Talassan priestess state her faith is a loving faith, one meant to bring new beginnings through its destruction. I have heard the Loviataran high priestess in this very temple state that her faith only brings pain to their own faithful.
When allowing a faith as vile as that of the Maiden of Pain to freely roam the lands, spreading their "soft" version of the faith, they gather recruits from all sections of society who may be malleable enough to be brought into the fold of their true uncensored faith.
When that faith is banned, these missionaries are kept in the shadows, only able to engage with equally like minded people. Their influence is greatly diminished.
There is a struggle that takes place between goodness and evil. This struggle isn't stuff of fiction. Our churches and gods' strength grow with the faithful that take on the cause. Torm would not have been able to strike down Bane were it not for those faithful that martyred themselves to complete that task.
The wicked don't belong in the light. Any exposure they are afforded by law is manipulated to further their vile purpose. Any light they are allowed should be snuffed. They should be condemned to the darkness they take on willingly.
Failure to fully condemn evil has left men like Aris serving within the Valkur's Roar guard. It has left Marissa, a Priestess of the Maiden of Pain commanding the defense of our Cormyte brothers and sisters. The elf "Butcher" walks freely in Cormyr and is sheltered among his Sunite friends after having taken an attempt at the life of one of our Tormish brothers. The examples go on and on. Pacifism is not the answer. It is a failure to ourselves, to our countrymen, and to our Triad we align ourselves to.
::After his statement he takes a step back and listens to any other statements to be made::
