I'm new here and have yet to make my official first character. I have had hundereds of ideas but they just havent grabbed my nipples and given them a full 360... I'm reluctant to play a repeat of my last character on another server (Ravenloft POTM) and cannot think of a new idea! I know how i wish him to look (Iwould post a picture but I lack the know-how to do it...what a noob) and he looks like a wizard of sorts (I do not wish for him to ware armour). This is how far Ihave got so far: Name: ? Race: Half-Elf Class: Wizard, Cleric, Cleric/Monk (i just don't know what I'm doing!!!! I there is anyone out there who is willing to help me develop my character that would be really really usefull! Please excuse my spelling, I'm a chef not a dictionary.

Here's how I do it. If your really stumped what I do is pick some characters from movie, and books that you liked, or want your character to resemble. Pick some traits from them and throw in a few things to make them your own. Then start with a background. Doesn't need to be complex, just where they came from, family life, and why they are where they are now. Simpler the better. Once you know, kind of how you want you charater to be, then you choose the class that meets the personality/goals you have in mind. Oh I ussually find some speech pattern for my character that gets me in the mind set for them. Something consistant...like a common phrase. Hope this helps.

Well, let me just give you a heads up on something. We do have a few rules on clerics and multi classing clerics.
First, you do need to choose a Deity for your cleric. We are a Forgotten Realms server so the Deity needs to be along those lines. (Plus, I find when I chose a Deity for one of my newer characters it gives me a better idea on his/her personality, so you may want to look at the deities before you go cleric.)
Secondly, if you do make a multiclass cleric the secondary class should match that of the Deity you chose. For example, say you decide to have a cleric of Ohgma. It wouldn't be too far fetched to have a Cleric/Bard as Ohgma favors Bards. Having a Cleric/Barbarian of Ohgma just wouldn't make any sense.
Beyond that, what seems to help me at least is to pick a place where you're character is from. Is he someone shady from Amn? A bright hopeful from the Silver Marches? A young mage prodigy from the Dalelands? It makes the possibilities endless, but once you chose a place you can hammer out a history much easier.

Alright then. Every character that I have not had at least a basics of their personality figured out before I started has fail. I have grown quickly bored with them. So I would suggest figuring out how your character would react to a few situations before you start.
Is your character suspicous or overly friendly.
Do they give their name to everyone they meet, or a bit more reserved.
I find Clerics the hardest class to play RP wise. But that is me.

As for name of your character. I keep mine short. Why you may ask...because I am lazy, and it will be the thing you type the most. But a good idea is to let the random name thing generate a few, then change a few letters here and there, and now you have your own unique name. So in other words, don't worry about the name much. Just get something that you don't despise. Oh another thought. Just because you character is a wizard, doesn't mean his surname wouldn't be Brightblade, or some other warrior sounding name. Then my next bit of advice....Listen to whatever Shadowcatjen says...she makes great characters

yea, im thinkin of either using my old character name (simply becos i like it hehe)
Hastian Vandel
or something either sounding a bit french like Renee le detruise (may need a bit of reserch hehe) or sounding a bit roman like Crassus, or tiberius.
as for the actual character himself, im thinking of him being a young half elf, just reached maturity (21) and who was born into a good family of fairly noble standing. his elven blood gave him an uncontrolable drive to gather knowlage and learn the mystical magic arts. so i imagine him coming from a city of some beauty and learning. ive looked through the places on the server and cant think were he would be from.

So I have some questions then. Disregard them if you like.
But if he is from a noble family why would he need to leave to study magic? He assumingly would have some finacial backing.
Explain how a half-elf came from a noble family. What were the circumstances where some noble elf/human married or was allowed to marry a human/elf.
Just somethings to consider.

For beauty and learning three places spring to mind. The Silver Marches has the city of Silverymoon. On the Sword Coast there is Candlekeep (but thats more learning then beauty). The City of Waterdeep also has ample opportunity for both beauty and learning, but as a major metropolis it might not be a jewel like Silverymoon is.
Mind, none of these places are on the server. Usually it's best to have it that your character is from some place other then where the server is located. Otherwise your character might be expected to know exactly where most places are. Being a new player, that won't carry over well.

a good point talus, chances are , he would be home schooled if he is from a rich family, and perhaps his father got his wealth from say millitary service through generations and owning farm lands or something, and decided to take his elven bride out of love and to further his land. jus had a thought too that instead of following in his fathers and brothers steps of military service, he finds learning and poetry and science and mechanics to be far more his 'cup of tea'.
(this is really helpful guys, dun more in like an hour with u 2 guys than i have all week hehe, keep it coming pls!!)

I would definitly look up Silverymoon and Waterdeep then. Sounds like you almost got him.
So one more question.
Why has he traveled to Cormyr?

hmm good question, could jus possibly be his time to leave the nest, to further his understanding of things in the world, or perhaps he is looking for something? like an artifact he has read about in a book that he keeps a seecrett.
brings me to something else i thought up aswelll, as i dislike all the familiars apart from the hell hound, i could say he came across a book where he read something and it summoned the helll hound and it tried to attack him ,and he kept doing it untill he was strong enough to wrestle the dog and establish himself as the master. ( i dont wwant him to b evil, i jus like the dog) but he could still struggle to controll the dog at times.

Well, hell hounds are Lawful Evil outsiders, not dogs. As far as I know the server doesn't enforce the one step alignment rule for familiars, but if you want a Hell Hound and don't want to be evil yourself, then you should pick Lawful Neutral. But remember, just because you aren't evil doesn't mean people are going to be for you working with such a creature, with it's obviously unnatural origins.

Well I would suggest something a bit more than just leaving the nest. Travel is not easy or cheap, so keep that in mind. You would have to have a good reason to go hundereds of miles. Plus if you give yourself a goal, its a good motivator for your character.

yea, the dog would make people mistrustful of him, but that would add to the rp i reckon...hopefuly hehe. and as for his motive, say hes looking for a sort of artifact or sumthin, and his private secretive reserch has led him to beleive its in cormyr . his secretive nature could also make people mistrustful of this seemingly charming young half elf, offering further role play possibilities

though, when reading that back, if his purpose is too specific, then it makes it hard for the character to explore his potential, if ya get me?

though, when reading that back, if his purpose is too specific, then it makes it hard for the character to explore his potential, if ya get me? Yep, got ya. I was thinkin something general and long term....but just because he starts with a goal doesn't mean he can't change along the way. Remeber all of this is foundation. Don't let any of it lock in how the character will develop later.

as for being of noble blood, think about tanis Half elf who was the product of a brutal rape and was taken in but left due to the looks he recieved being in an all elf society. That gives you reason he was a half elf, reason why he left to come to cormyr, and heck, maybe the man that cuased his birth was a human from cormyr and he is travelling to his other homeland to see what kind of place would produce such a man. Play him with a bit of a chip on his shoulder to fighter types and such...
