Sooo, ya finally got yer build right? Yup, yer pc is extremely self-sufficient. Ya can solo the fire giants, ya can make gold hand over fist by wiping out undead pirates, but are ya happy?
oh, sure you can *smirk* with the best of 'em. Yer deadpan one liners reeally crack you up, even if the plebs don't git it. However, are you the FRC equivelent of the comic book guy from the Simpsons?
Seriously, are you soo self-involved that you cannot enjoy other people having a good time? We get it, Yer incredible emotes about the detailed craftwork you do in Great Gaunt have astounded EVERYONE who reads them. Your standing there leaning on the fence have AMAZED us all. I personally thought "Wow! That person standing there ,not talking THAT person has it ALL together."
Okay , I am done being a jerk fer the moment, but what I wanna point out is how you can allow other people to have fun AND improve yer enjoyment of the game by NOT doing things. When someone screams "Trap!!" DOn't say "I saw it." Instead say "Thanks, Gosh, almost stepped on that tripwire." "Them poisoned darts woulda skewered me." Let them feel like they did something good, instead of like an idiot fer warning folks.
When someone offers to heal ya, Let them, instead of quaffing a potion.
When people talk about a dungeon you have been to IC, you don't have to tell them you been there and killed the monsters , making yerself feel important and them feel like yer a jerk who spouts spoilers, You can give colorful, yet nondescript, hints about what is comming and tell them "I wouldn't go there if the steel regent gave me a fief in Dhedluk fer it, them gnolls is big, mean and always run in packs!!"
And if yer scouting , why not come back and tell folks what ya saw , instead of starting a fight and making them all drop their sodas, or pop, to comearound the corner to the fight late. Why not go slow and enjoy the crawl?
Which bring me to ANOTHEr point. Why not wait between encounters for the gatherers to collect the treasure, for the healers to heal. And fer the roleplayers to rp? I mean we understand yer time is valuable and all,and some of us old farts hafta lookit our fingers to type, but sheesh! Is it too much to ask to let me type a line of dialog before ya bring the next bunch of baddies to waste us, or hopefully be wasted?
If someone tells a tale, is it reeeally necessary to one-up them by spouting yer even better-er story? Why can't ya simply let them bask in the glow a bit? Wouldn't YOU appreciate it if you told a tale and people were awed instead of telling ya, "BIG deal , been there, done that , got the t-shirt!"?
Roleplay is just that, playing yer role. Just cuz yer the most amazing thing since sliced bread, doesn't mean you cannot let others shine. Next time maybe let the first level newbie disarm that trap.
Thanks fer listening,
Walt

Good post, food for thought. A couple of those examples I've been on both sides of the equation.

My rogue can't spot traps from behind the guys in plate. I'm always happy if they actually see the traps, because I'm usually not close enough to detect them unless the party has already stepped on a few and decided to go a little slower. If they see the traps, more traps for me.
I like when other characters use their abilities, so I can judge what their abilities are.
Though if there are two rogues in the party, it's nice to let all the rogues try to recover a trap before you disarm it (because you can't recover it).

Sometimes you just get spotted, and combat starts despite your best intentions. Running back to the party may or may not be feasible/worthwhile/productive. In general scouts do not great tanks/soloers make, so they tend not to want to start a fight without the rest of the party.
+1 to the rest.

And if yer scouting , why not come back and tell folks what ya saw , instead of starting a fight and making them all drop their sodas, or pop, to comearound the corner to the fight late. Why not go slow and enjoy the crawl? Walt Using personal game experience, I totally agree with this part... it is so frustrating when the party spots an enemy and someone just rushes ahead starting the fight, while I'm still finishing writing some IC reaction for my character... as a spellcaster I usually like to emote my character preparing herself for the encounter "opens her spell component pouch and pulls out something, holding it in her right hand while starts to softly speak a few words" - as an example... I click enter and the fight is already over... yay "puts back the component inside the pouch and doesn't finish what she was about to say" :\ Yeah, fight ends, you are in charge of collecting the loot... you start to do it and enjoy to rp some of the things you find, no one emotes back or shows any interest... and while you are still collecting they are already in a different room / area -> love when this happens, just makes me want to log out right there! No offense but... darn! With my new character I only had a few of these bitter experiences, then again haven't played much; but stuff like this has happened loads of time with me; and I have also witnessed many times characters rping and having no feedback from the party... always made me feel "bad" and having this "obligation" to rp something back just to let the person know that what he/she wrote was read. I mean, yeah your character doesn't give a darn if X is doing this or that, but you as player can at least emote it... Yesterday, before crashing, I was at the GG temple with 2 other characters, and emoted something like "eyes him up and down, taking a few moments to examine him"... was cool to have a reply from the player saying "doesn't care about being observed and continues to do whatever he was doing....". Most of the times I receive a reply with the character description, which is basically the feedback I expect when I emote this. Something like that. Treb.

This is a great post. I've never liked all powerful and mighty characters who had nothing better to do but be better than you. Generally there is no depth to them. Playing a character who thinks they are perfect is cool, but don't actually make them perfect. I'm talking a little more than just mechanics too. It's ok to not have an all powerful build. It maybe fun even.

I like this, as well. I've got mad props for anyone who can be that dedicated fighter, that pure wizard or cleric, bar, or whatnot. Friends don't let friend multiclass in silly ways.

Keep in mind that these are my opinions. I shouldn't have to explain this, but just in case I do, here goes... The following opinions aren't to be called "wrong" or "incorrect". They are simply how I feel about multi-classing in certain ways.
Wizard / Fighter
The most powerful fighter buffs are 1 or 2 turns per level so you would sacrifice a lot of warrior power for wizard power or the other way around. It looks good on paper and it would give the wizard some aggressive strength, but you'd either be a weak wizard or a weak fighter. If you evened them out (15/15), you'd be lacking in each class and be behind the par for both a lvl 30 wizard and a lvl 30 fighter.

Another one that I've never been able to make work is: Wizard / Bard / Red Dragon Disciple You just kill your wizard levels by spending 11 levels on bard and RDD. It's just not worth the loss in wizard power. Oh... and anything with Harper Scout

Some people do not build for power, but for the rp that comes with the classes they choose.

I agree with the sentiments of the OP here. I could go into details, but it doesn't seem necessary. There are just folks that like to play the lead character most of the time, but while a story needs a lead character (or characters), it's pretty dull if the secondary characters don't get to say or do anything along the way. P.S. I have been known to multi-class poorly

I have a build for a wizard, fighter, weapon master that will explode people's faces and make them wonder "How'd he do that" people include npc's btw.
I will also tell you that Rdd prestige class is meant to be a hybrid caster class that augments it's abilities to fight in melee. It will not make you a better caster I don't think that's the point, if it were you'd gain 8 char instead of 8 str. PS wizard is an odd combo for Rdd, bard or sorc are pre reqs for the class and I agree that wiz seems like a less optimal build. That being said it's none of my business how another player decides to level thier PC.

Perhaps I should explain better- Levels this time:
Wizard 10 / Bard 1 / RDD 10.
An epic level wizard with minimal casting ability and fighting. Now, of course, IF you get that PC to lvl: Wizard 15 / Bard 1 / RDD 10, he'll rock, but most builds shape up by level 26. The lvl 21 version I linked up there would NOT be self-sufficient and anyone fares will with some hard hitters in their party, but I'd pit a lvl 15 pure wizard against that lvl 21 build and come out on top every time.
That's what I was getting at. Comments?

Put a level 15 wizard against a level 21 fighter, the wizard will win. Comparing anything to a full progression caster is pointless. Anf with toughness, any investment in Con, access to Tumble and UMD and the ton of skill points needed to invest in them, You find yourself with one hell of a tank, and one hell of a story for why that character is classed as he is.
Class combos aren't silly if you have rp reasons for them, same as single classed.
I believe this thread had an original topic not based on this though, so, uhm, that stuff what got said. It was the saidest.

This thread has REALLY devolved and it's really, really frustrating to see the brilliance of the initial post lost in yet another discussion of what build beats what.

People are just proving the OP right with how this thread has developed. To me a lot of what he is referring to is in fact an extension of players themselves.
When I came here, I came to just enjoy myself, and I did. There where people who hung about in the "cool gang" by Isinhold's (now known as Greatgaunt) "fence" (the one outside the inn). They'd ignore everyone they deemed lower than themselves and RP'd away in their own little bubble. I noticed this, sure. But I thought "So what?" I don't have to act like that. I'll do my own thing, and try to make connections and build up my own RP in my own way. I'd welcome other players, and if they didn't do anything to make my PC hate theirs, or do something to irritate me personally, then I'd go out of my way to let them have as much fun as I could generate for them- a comical moment, a scene where they come out on top, not me, a moment where my PC makes a gigantic foul up, much to his own detriment, and the amusement of others. Anything just to create "atmosphere", and let the story flow, both while adventuring, and also while standing by that very same fence in Isinhold. It doesn't have to be a "big" thing. Even the smallest little thing, can have a great impact on someone else playing. Eventually I met others who felt and thought as I did... many others. Things where wonderful. Creative roleplay abounded. Fun times where had.
Anyway up until the server went down, I think I did okay in that regard. To be honest however, lately, not so well. It took an event here to realise what had happened, then it dawned on me just how I was behaving. I wasn't trying to give back to others anymore, just take. All I saw was flaws and I wasn;t looking at all the plus points. I'd forgotten the reason why I even played here, so caught up in my own obsession with personal advancement and keeping my characters image and ego intact. Character seperation was there, but at the same time, it wasn't- I'd take slight personally if something didn't go the way my character would have wanted.
I'd completely forgotten that just a few months ago, this server was down and out with no server host (Thank you host!) and therefore no FRC at all.
My character wasn't fun to be around. All I was concerned was his image and his progression. Not at what fun people could have by being around him. When this happens, you may as well shelve a PC and move on to the next, as it's completely pointless- nobody will want to travel with you, or RP with you, it's as simple as. Luckily for me, I realised what I was doing before it got too far.
Maybe I'm being too harsh on myself, maybe I'm not, but my point here (and a rather long-winded way of getting to it, I admit!) is that I can see this in other characters too. I'm not going to point fingers or name names, however I will throw this out there: Look to yourself first, and don't blame others if things don't go to your liking. There's a whole server of opportunity out there for whatever or whoever your character is or what you want him/her to be. Push for this, but not at the expense of others' fun. Allow your character to be "human" (Or Elf, Dwarf, Gnome, Half Orc, ecetera) - i.e- flawed in some way. This will only add depth to your character, and that is never ever a bad thing, and it allows others to interract with that flaw, or vulnerability- creating roleplay.
Allow your character to be vulnerable, as this will also add opportunities for roleplay. Recently, one of my PC's was attacked by bounty hunters. Likely it would've been 50/50 or worse for him to come out of that fight alive by himself. Luckily for him, two others noticed his predicament and lended their aid, turning the tide. Now moments before, one of these people my character was arguing with- not seriously, mind, but still, it was an argument of irritation, on both sides. However, once this fight was concluded, my character was grateful to them both, conceding to them that they'd just saved his life.
I'll not go into more detail here as it would just blow open my characters' plot to the server, however, the roleplay that became of all of that was fantastic- and now it's ongoing too. My character also has a new group of people that he frequently travels with, far extending his ability to gather wealth and power beyond what he had before. So just by acting this out in a manner where all people involved had fun, I've now gained much MUCH more in return!
It's situations like this that allow our characters to shine. A bit of adversity can lead to situations of great Roleplay and unexpected gain. All we as players have to do is to allow it to happen and drop the massive ego's from our shoulders. The DM's have given us enough already now. I think it's time we all started acting like the playerbase we used to be, and get back on track with some of the greatest RP I've seen on NWN on any server I've played on.
